Bishop Amat’s Rio Ruiz and South Hills’ C.J. Saylor, two of the area’s top baseball players, have been selected to compete in the AFLAC All-American Classic. The announcement was made Monday at Petco Park in San Diego before the Padres-Rockies game. The All-Star game is scheduled for later this summer in San Diego.
Ruiz helped Bishop Amat win the school’s eighth CIF-Southern Section title. He hit a key double in a 5-4 victory over Torrance in last Tuesday’s semifinals and a home run in the Lancers’ 7-0 victory over Palm Desert in the championship game on Friday.
Saylor has been a key cog for South Hills the past two years and helped the Huskies earn a share of the Sierra League title this past season.
Ruiz and Saylor are familiar with each other, having played on youth ball teams since they were 3 years old. They also are members of the San Gabriel Arsenal travel ball team.
Tyler France, Saylor’s teammate at South Hills, is expected to be added to the team later this month.
