SGV Babe Ruth 18-under punches ticket to World Series; Ruiz, Garza earn national acclaim

The San Gabriel Valley Babe Ruth 18-under all-star baseball team beat defending champion Watsonville 5-4 on Tuesday to win the Pacific Southwest Regionals in Modesto, punching a ticket to the World Series, which starts Aug. 6 in Ephrata, Washington.
Glendora’s Nick Wagner, the tournament MVP, belted a two-out single in the sixth that drove in Tartans teammate Martin Gallegos for the game-winning run, sending the SGV to the Babe Ruth World Series for the second time in three years.
The SGV team has plenty of familiar names, including Glendora’s John Alexander, Brennan Salgado, Nick Wagner, Sean Beckman; Bishop Amat pitcher Daniel Zamora, Bonita’s Adam McCreery and Walnut’s Bryce Harrison.

ALL-AMERICANS: Bishop Amat’s Rio Ruiz and Bonita’s Justin Garza continue piling up postseason awards after spectacular junior seasons. Both were named underclassmen all-americans by ESPN RISE and MaxPreps.
