Covina coach Pete Loaiza resigned to take a teaching position in the Glendale Unified School district, a Covina school official explained this morning. The Colts have a strong group returning this spring, it should be interesting to learn who takes over.

Kinda funny how Pete thought he was just gonna win by letting his players do whatever they want. i guess he learned it from Murphy at Northview, however I must admit that Murphy teaches his guys to talk crap so I guess he's got a leg up on Pete. So its just not surprising that he "resigned" to take a teaching job. Hmm, maybe babysitting the knuckleheads that get detention everyday will make him a better coach. I just don't understand how he thought he was gonna win after losing his best players a few years ago. He had all his "guys" and still finished in second to a San Dimas team that I must say was loaded. Yeah SD didnt go anywhere in the playoffs but the fact is, Covina was dominated by good teams because they were not prepared to play. Hey pete, coaching is a lot more than just showing up and throwing BP. Anyway, I hope Covina makes the right choice this time when they hire because they are a prestigious school and should try and restore their baseball program after it's been embarrassed these last three years. Bye pete :)

Word on street is former DR coach Verplancke put his name in....not a bad option..led DR to Finals few years back...knows how to run a program and get most out of his kids..to bad he left DR

Seems to me like someones a little hurt that their name or someones name that they have in mind hasn't come up! Honestly who do you think should be considered? Hahaha

Roddy or buddies...jeez, call Covina and say you are interested for gods sake instead of repeated posts on the blog. We get it, you want the job, now call Thomas and tell him. Tireless self promotion isn't attractive.

DAN RODDY would be the man to take on a program like that. He would make everyone of those players better and build a strong program for years to come.

Covina HS, I have two words for you
D A N R O D D Y !

If he should throw his hat in the ring DO NOT PASS ON HIM! You will only enhance your program and Athletes by letting him coach at your school. All of the players that I know that have played for him in the past have nothing but good things to say about him. I had a son that played for him and he and we couldn't have had a better experience. Just some food for thought.

Want to agree with a couple of posts. Covina would be real smart if they hired Roddy from SH. Has head coaching experience, a ring and every kid I have ever talked to loves playing for him (my son was one of them).
Be smart over in Colt land.

fan,
He is having a great year, but Sept. call-ups are generally for those who are on the 40-man roster & Brett is not. So in order for them to call him up, they would have to take another player off and that generally does not happen because they do not want to take the chance of losing a player.

Brett Pill Covina grad is raking for Fresno Giants AAA Team. He leads the league in 6 offensive categories and has 24 homers and 104 Rbi's while batting over .300. He should be a cinch for a Sept callup.

I agree----One thing though, YOU CAN'T HAVE HIM!!

Merrill will not be the Covina head coach, he will be coaching little league in la verne for 5 more years.

Covina's getting a ring in 2012. Just saying now.

Word is that Scott Root has expressed interest in making a comeback. He's already on campus and it looks like he is the front runner. Sounds like Merrill and Root back for round 2 since they already teach there.
