Breaking News: Bishop Amat QB Rio Ruiz chooses football over baseball, will not miss any games

Bishop Amat quarterback Rio Ruiz was scheduled to leave with Team USA Baseball after Friday’s game against Servite so he could compete in the COPABE Pan American 18 and Under championships in Colombia from Sept. 12 through Oct 2. However, Ruiz said he will remain with the football team for the remainder of the season after learning the Pan American championships were pushed back to November, which is during the football playoffs. Ruiz told the L.A. Times, “I’m not leaving my team.” He would have missed three straight games after Friday’s big game against Servite, but now won’t miss any.

Playoffs?! Don’t talk about playoffs. Playoffs?! Doesn’t matter. Amat’s not getting past the first round, assuming they even make the playoffs.

  • Smallcitymc

Without bias as to playing baseball, this is a good enough reason (or should I say “reasons”) NOT to go!… http://www.fco.gov.uk/en/travel-and-living-abroad/travel-advice-by-country/south-america/colombia

I would imagine that Hags is going to have to give the back-ups some playing time even if the score board doesn’t allow it, e.g., small lead.

    BREAKING NEWS!!! No one cares!!!!

I swear this blog is dedicated just to this kid. I’d hate to see what will happen after he graduates

  • 12th man

    Coach Hags,
Call it coincidence or just the luck of the draw..If the article reads true what better time then to start playing 2 QB’s & im not talking about one plays one half or they alternate quarters..I mean they should take turns every play or every other play..What better way to prepare your QB for next season not to mention you could use Rio as a dual threat (QB WR)on the plays he’s not in there at QB, He could line up as a Wide Reciever & either way its a win-win situation you either throw to him or run the ball both situations will open up the defense & your bubble screen passes will be more effective..”My Point”..Quit putting yourself in a situation where you have try to figure out who your starting QB will be each week..it causes controversy & skepticism on the team…One last thing..What happened to the Amat playbook?? 2 years ago or it could of been 3 years ago Amat was running trick plays up the yin yang..If im not mistaken i beleive they successfully completed the Double Pass play 3 weeks in a row once in the playoffs against the all mighty Long Beach Poly who was ranked #1 in the Nation at that time..What better time to put that play back into the system now that you have two QB’s..

Actually, I wouldn’t worry to much. When ever something like this happens, there are always going to be tentative dates announced, even if they are somehow “set.”

I wouldn’t be at all surprised if this thing doesn’t change dates again or is moved completely out of that country.

12th man, in answer to your question about trick plays. It has always been my experience that teams that often use trick plays, do that because they don’t really match up well with the other team.

They employ theses types of plays in order to catch the other team off guard and to hope that to somehow gives them an edge. I don;t think that this Amat team needs to reach that far into their playbook to score

BTW, I don’t know how old you are, but if you happen to remember a coach by the name of Tommy Prothro, then maybe you’ll understand what im speaking about.

  • Amat Hater

    Listen,

Now you have your primadonna QB for all the games in the regular season, which is great, because you will see that even with him you will lose at least three games – Servite, Alemany, and Crespi. I think You might even lose to Venice and Notre Dame. You only put up 14 on a weak Garfield team, and I heard it was 7 – 0 until late in the fourth.

Ruiz does not need to wotty about missing any playoff games, because the playoffs will miss Amat all together. So be ready to go to Columbia Ruiz, because football after November 4th will not be an issue for you or any other Amat player.

The real Big Blue is North of you at Charter Oak, and we will be in the playoffs while you guys are wondering what happened this season.

    Haha

  • Charger Fan

    O.K. Robledo,

Now that we have game one in the books, who do you think is the #1 team in the SGV now? Be real and stop kissing Amat’s ass. Here’s what the top 5 should be:

    1. Charter Oak
    2. West Covina
    3. Bonita
    4. Monrovia
    5. Amat

CO will only keep rolling, and let’s see where Amat is after the next 3-5 games. They will be going into league probably 4-2.

Rio is one guy, and he is pretty good, but even he can’t save this year’s Amat team. So this story about the Pan Am games rescheduling is a mute one, don’t you think?

  • The U

While I agree that Amat is not its usual self this season, you folks at C.O. are living in LaLa Land…You beat Glendora 17-6 and all of a sudden your world beaters…..BREAKING NEWS Glendora will lose 3 games in League by 20+ points….Amat over C.O. by 14 and W.C. over C.O. by 10……

  • The U

NEWS FLASH Sept 23rd, 2011…..Rancho Cucamonga smokes Charter Oak on their home field

  • Just sayin

Hater – if there is one thing Ruiz has never been called by anyone who knows him,it’s prima donna.
And ChOak fan – really? After that list ells performance against Glendora you’re gonna keep CO at 1? West Covina ties Covina and you want the at 2?
    You’re joking right?
(and Monrovia is in the Star News ranking – but they might not score vs Amat either)

  • Amat Bully

Dang i expected Amat to lose in the first round fully loaded now they will have an excuse if they lose.

  • Amat Bully

    CORRECTION WHEN THEY LOSE….NOT IF

  • Tell it like it is

Just sayin you are one pathetic fool. You have so much blue koolaide in your veins that your eyes are turning purple from embarrassment. I would bet your moms trailer that any of the teams that are listed in front of amat would have scored more than 14 measly points on GARFIELD! West Covina, Covina, Monrovia, Muir, Arcadia, and several other schools in the area would definitely put up more points on Amats Defense. You have your wires crossed. Go to cal preps and see the significant changes they have made to their BA predications. And be sure to wipe that silly frown off your face when you go to the Mater Dei projections as well. Monrovia (CA) 22, Mater Dei (Santa Ana, CA) 21, keep it together because its going to be a long season if you dont.

    12th Man,

Jcaz believes high school defenses react like D1 teams. They do not. They usually totally blow up on trick plays. Two teams come to mind on executing trick plays; Bonita and Mayfair. Open up the play book Amat; trick plays work in high school.

Rio is special and indeed brings the team up but can Charter Oak, Amat , West Covina even really be on the field with Upland or Rancho Cucamonga? Wake up folks and smell the coffee !!

  • Real talk

I love all the hating on Amat. Like the saying goes”if your not hated your a nobody” still in the minds of all sgv. That’s what happens when you beat down all the teams in sgv when and that’s a big when they put us on their schedule. You get alot of what if’s and could of’s. Aka little brother complex. Smh;)

  • it’s suicide

Bishop has to be worried at this point….Garfield is a solid team. However, if you think they are better than Chino Hills, West Covina, Charter Oak, Monrovia, or Bonita, you are crazy. The lancer Defense, did their job and what was expected to do. The offense is in shambles. The only constant on that side is Jalen Moore. They are truly in danger of getting shut out 3 times in league. Serra league defenses are way better than Garfield. Here is something to think about regarding where bishop is right now and where their competition is at right now

Crespi 48 Dominguez 6 (Great team)
Alemany 55 Pasadena 0(expected but could have scored 100pts)
Notre Dame 35 Serra 13(Section Champ)
Loyola 28 Mira Costa 14(very good program)
    Servite 20 Oceanside 0(Section Champ)
    Mission Viejo 35 Centennial(Bakersfield) 6(Section champ)
Long Beach Poly 24 Grant(Sacramento) 23(Section Runner Up)
    Orange Lutheran 42 Brigham(UT) 7 (Ranked #5 in UT)
Santa Margarita 56 Long Beach Jordan 0 (expected, but still domination)
Tesoro 35 Hart 21 (great program)
San Clement 35 Long beach Cabrillo 6
    Edison 48 Baldwin(HI) 0 ( number 11 team in HI)
Los Alamitos 70 Norwalk 14(expected but domination
St John Bosco 27 Mission Hills 0( ranked #55 in state)
    Lakewood 46 Locke(los Angeles) 22

“”"”Bishop Amat 14 Garfield 0(Rank 214 in state)”"”"”(all 5 top SGV teams are ranked way higher)

If you think Rio not being there all summer did not have a negative effect on Bishop’s offensive progression, you are crazy. Just look at what the other pac 5 teams did against great teams, good teams, and not so good teams…Bishop By far is the furthest Behind. If Rio was there all year, I bet you the put up 35 pts in the opener. You can’t rewind time. They did not put in the work and it showed. Next weeks suicide vs Servite is going to really show what’s to come in league….I know Bishop Fans are proud, but be ready for a long excruciating season.

  • Real talk

@it’s suicide if Bishop Amat doesn’t play with the big boys which one of these teams will? The teams you listed won’t even play not good at all bishop amat.

  • X’s and O’s

This is very bad on the part of the organizers of this tournament. I’m sure many of the kids, not just Rio, have made arrangements to accommodate this tournament and now they change it. Absolutely horrible.

I love high school sports just as much (and probably more) than the next guy and feel that it molds the lives of young men, however, one thing no one has mentioned when it comes to this tournament is the fact that these kids will be missing a substantial amount of school. To have this in November is not just a very important part of football season, but also a critical time in academia as it is near the end of most school’s first grading quarter.

  • it’s suicide

Real talk I don’t know what you are saying, but my point was that in the opening week, they did not look as good as their competition. This is not about whether Bishop is better than local SGV teams. That is irrelevant. What is relevant “is Bishop Better than their competition”? The Servite game is the only game on bishop’s preseason schedule, which one can gauge, how good this team is. Based upon the performance against Garfield, opinions may be that this team is not going to be good this year. I am not saying that Bishop can not improve. But, Garfield is not as good as any of the top 5 teams in the SGV like West Covina, Chino Hills, Charter Oak, Monrovia, and Bonita…are you saying that Garfield is as good as any of those teams? With the exception of La Mirada, all the teams they play are ranked Higher than Garfield.

  • no way

Xs and O’s its South America…They have baseball schools out there…Missing a month that close to mid finals and crapping on the 75 kids who want to compete in the pac 5 playoffs would be out of the question for my kid. I know this a great accomplishment. Coach hag is in more a pickle now….what do you do…What will rio do?

  • SGV football is on the rise.

All of the following teams in the SGV are ranked in top 100 in state. Top 1000 in the nation. We beat up on each other, But we have some really good teams…For the size of our little fish Bowl…I am proud!

    Bishop Amat 22
    West Covina 35
    Bonita 54
    Chino Hills 67
    La Habra 41
    Monrovia 88
    Damien 100

Sorry Charter Oak… I don’t know why they did not rank you in the top 100. I thought was weird.

  • oldskool

next week Amat and west covina will lose.

  • allstate

Garfield was NOT a bad team last year and they are better this year. All this talk about Amat needing to measure up against Servite is a joke because NONE of the teams in this area can match up to Servite and NONE of the schools have GNADS to play’em. Sit back and draw ridiculous comparisons with local schools but the match up w/Servite won’t happen, Servite has no need to play you clowns. There is absolutely NOTHING in it for them. You losers should be pumping up Amat to rep the SGV against the Big Bad OC, biy instead you narrow minded asses just can’t wait for an Amat loss. You are all pathetic. Get yourselves some lives….The real joke is, all these kids despite the school they play for RESPECT each other and their individual accomlishments on the field and against one another. You ADULT clowns are the real losers. I bet not one other athlete has posted on here. Just a bunch of old ass men trying to thump there chests in the name of their kids and “old High School” they once played for. Appreciate the talent BOYS and stay positive. All these kids are workong hard and they all deserve our respect and praise.

  • it’s suicide

all state, no one said any of the SGV teams could match up against servite. No one said, that Garfield was a bad team. However they lost to Colony, who lost to Ayala, and Ayala got blasted 54-7 by charter oak(lost to glendora) and 37-14 to damien, and lost to South Hillls(lost to everyone). So I can’t Say Garfield is better than average. I mean those are all different games, and its hard to compare in this fashion. However, everyone expected more. Everyone does rep Bishop Amat as the SGV Figure head. The people Inland, already say that Amat Can’t beat Corona Centennial, The people in OC showed us what they thought of Bishop, when Tesoro came in here beat bishop at home last year. Long Beach Says “Bishop Who”. And yes, there are plenty of Former SGV players who come on this blog. Don’t get mad bc Bishop is not what it used to be. It’s a free country…and people can come on here and blog about whatever they like. Bishop has not look polished lately. a 14-0 win over Garfield was not impressive, and did not compare to performances of the other top pac 5 teams. Is that true or false. The scores are posted below. you be the judge. What’s your prediction for the servite game? I will tell you this. Alemany is as good as last year, Crespi has D1 players, and Notre Dame has the fastest running back in the Serra….Is Bishop Better or worse than last year? As of right now a win is a win, but that was too close for comfort.

  • great for the sgv

Yeah let’s all the drink the kool-aid, come on jump on the bishop bandwagon. HAHA you already have pedopony from covina what more do you need. Stop the whining bishop.

  • New York

I don’t know Rio, but from everything I’ve read he seems like a great competitor with a good head on his shoulders. I can’t imagine a true competitor leading his team to what would be the 2nd and 3rd round of the Pac 5 playoffs and then simply leaving his football team to go play baseball, a sport that he will eventually play in college and maybe MLB regardless of whether or not he plays in this tournament. The consideration is how much does this competitor value what will be the last football games of his life during the most intense time, if Amat makes it to the second round.

  • Real talk

@It’s suicide what is the difference in amount of kids that each school has to pick from compared to Amat? I remember seeing the size of some of the oc and inland schools and they have huge schools. The enrollment has to be thousands more than Amat. I think that Amat does ok going against the bigger schools. I have to say that Amat does not strike me as a team that would be a team that would win it all, and hasn’t in many years. I talk to former Amat players and they ask me how is Amat doing I say they are doing good they only lost 2 games this was back in in think 2005 and they say what I remember if we would lose 1 game a season it was a loss of a season even if we won it all. Wow what a different standard Amat had back then. I hear coach McCutcheon trying to explain the feel of wining a championship and the mindset it takes to wear that A on the side of their helmet. I feel that the coaching is in need of a change I feel that the players from servite would go to war with their coach. It is alot of things that could play in to it. Bishop wasn’t suppose to beat palm desert the way they did but they did. The look on palm deserts face after they lost priceless. Not that little school.

  • 12th man

Heres the bottom line..even though Servite is favorite 35-6 you never know whats going to happen in High School Football..Anyone can beat Anyone on any given Friday~..Amat has had some big wins in the last few years where the other team was Heavily favorite One year they knocked out Mater Dei on another occasion they beat Orange Lutheran & St.Bonnaventure & theese were games Amat was supposed to lose..So you never know..Although I am concerned with the line ..If Garfield was able to push the line back & be more physical can you imagine how much more dangerous servite will be where players are bigger & faster???

The Kid is a True Lancer

Rio Ruiz chooses football over baseball

    September 5, 2011 | 12:44pm

Bishop Amat quarterback Rio Ruiz has decided to stick with the football team and not join the USA 18U baseball squad when it goes to Columbia in November.

He was set to leave the football team this month and miss three games, but when the tournament was postponed and changed to November, he was forced to make a tough decision.

“I’m not leaving my team,” Ruiz said Monday.

Ruiz, a third baseman, is expected to be a first-round baseball draft pick in June.

He has been playing football throughout high school while also focusing on baseball.

“We talked as a family and there was no way he’s going to leave his team during the playoffs,” Ruiz’s father, Rudy, said.

Ruiz had wanted to finally play for a national team after having to drop out each year for football. His football coaches had agreed to let him miss games this month to play baseball.

Ruiz, a senior, didn’t start last week against Garfield after missing pre-season practice for an all-star baseball game. Now he’ll be able to focus on Anaheim Servite, the team the Lancers play this weekend.

You are welcome Fred but at least post my comment I dont care that you used the information

  • Amat Bully

Truthfully a lot of Amat fans might hate what i have to say but i dont care, Ruiz decision, “i think” is based on the fact that he knows Amat will only play two games in November the 4th and the 11th he knows Amat will not make it out of the first round, so this kid will still be able to make his Baseball thing on the 14th. Good Job Ruiz but your fooling no one. But Good luck with whatever you do your an outstanding athlete.

  • Unreal…

    Bully,

Rio is a competitor. Whats the point of playing if you dont think you can win? Amat has a chance to win every game they are in as does Charter Oak.

Or, maybe Big Lou already has his Thanksgiving vacation plans set since he knows Charter Oak has no chance against the Inland division schools. If he was still in the Southeast beating up on .500 teams in the finals I’m sure he would have planned his trip to Cabo by now.

Rio has plenty of big baseball games left in his early career. Missing this tournament just shows his commitment towards winning a championship which is the ultimate goal.

So how about you put the crystal ball away, drop the 900 number and start worrying about the Sierra and the Inland playoffs…. if you get there.

    Go AMAT!!!

  • Aaron

Someone tell me why leaving was ever on the table…Multi-sport athlete means that you take care of your obligations…I was not one. However, the many I knew in high school…the basketball players would practice for Eckler in the summer and then come to football practice.

    I honestly don’t get it.

  • trojanlar

    Simply said,
These little bush league teams (W.Covina, C.O., Monrovia etc) don’t bring anything to the table that Amat does by competing in DIViSION ! PAC 5. FOOTBALL!!!
How quickly people forget the ass spanking we gave the champion bulldogs just 2 & 3 years ago.
Take your CIF DIV. nobody cares championships and shove it.

I am glad I got to meet this young man at our throw around a couple months ago, I am also glad he is going to play out his senior year at QB because that would have haunted him forever, senior football lives with us all if you ever played the game. Us old farts come on this blog and piss and moan about so and so while this kid will walk away with a smile knowing we will be watching him swing a bat on TV in the near future.

Why is this Charter Oak fool (Bully) on here talking crap about BA when his own Chargers almost got beat by Glendora? Glendora even had a TD called back so the score would have been CO 17, Glendora 13. That’s not very impressive at all at any level of football. Every year some CO fan starts to mouth off while completely ignoring the fact that the toughest team that CO Coach Lou Farrar has EVER scheduled in his career was Rancho Cucamonga (who he has yet to beat! lol) WAY TO REP THE SGV! LOL!

I’m w/ Aram. Charter Oak is going to lose to Roosevelt next week.

“Amat Bully” gives more attention to BA that he does his own school. What an honor! lol and what a loser.

  • Yorba Linda Rising

    Trojanlar Size Small Of Course,

Your Amat team is good in the SGV. Not so against big OC teams. Amat will get hammered, bad. Now you will know what it feels like when the toughest of the SGV public schools lose to your preferred Catholic School. Enjoy the beat down. Best Amat stays out of the OC.

  • BA Blues

I don’t get why everyone is doubting. Garfield played Amat tough last year too and they had a lot of returning players this year that saw a signficant amount of gametime in 2010.

In 2010, Garfield gained 128 yards passing and 131 yards on the ground. The Garfield D held Jalen Moore to only 23 yards on 12 carries! This year was a different story as Amat did better by holding Garfield to 104 yards rushing and only 20 yards passing. Moore ran for 100 yards this year too.

Bishop Amat also had two touchdowns called back. Would 28-0 be more acceptable?

  • Unreal…

    Yorba Linda Rising,

Go ask Mater Dei or OLu about us. I’m still in pain about the Tesoro game but bad games happen and great teams find a way to win those games. Unfortunately, we didn’t. Servite will find out Friday how Mighty the Men in Blue are.

Plus, Yorba Linda doesn’t have a team that can compete with any of the top SGV schools.

    Go AMAT!!!

  • trojanlar

    Yorba Linda Rising,
FYI: The last time we visited your county of no tree’s, we spotted an Orange Lutheran team that was a semi-finalist in the Pac 5 championship 24 points and came away with a 47-39 victory at Orange Coast College.
We also beat Mater Dei in our house in the playoffs the year after, something that took the almighty FRIAR’S 10 years to do!
BTW: Are you a Friar that had to grab his ankles for 10 years?

Which is it amat bully, one post you said you cheer for everyone in the sgv except Amat, and now your saying you only cheer for Co. Are you getting confused by your own b.s.?
I will keep it short since I know you can’t comprehend more than a few sentences at a time.

I can’t believe how many haters that Rio has. Or wait. Yes I can. I guess u guys have a reason to hate. I know NONE of u can fill his shoes. Not just any kid can hit a homerun out of Dodger Statium. No just any kid can make Breaking News. Right now only Rio can. So get over it. Not to mention going to the baseball Olympics. So if we win or loss to Servite haters will still have no lives. That goes for WC CO and some of you guys from OC. Just look to see who we won last year. Teams from OC. Have a wonderful life hating on AMAT. We love it

I agree with the OC guy who says the OC teams are superior to the sgv top teams.but props to Amat who at least plays against them and have pulled off some good victories before.Charter oak guy has forgotten how far they made it in cif last year in there first year in a decent division,15 years from now you will be just like Amat with no championships.west covina we will see next week if they are really as good when they play Loyola a weaker team in the pac 5.

Nice Job!Keep up your dumbass comments because every parent that reads them will definitely think twice about sending their kid to Charter Oak. With fans like your ignorant ass, who needs enemies?

    @ D Samarzich
Hey, “big Dave”(and I use that term loosely) who did upland even open up with last week? They played a high school that I didn’t even know existed. Anytime the weakass “u” plays anyone that’s halfway decent they get their ass handed to them. i.e. Loyola, rancho, norco, and not to mention the ass whooping corona centennial gave you. So don’t come on this blog and talk mess about the SGV schools when your coach is too afraid to schedule anyone from SGV. If upland is on such on a higher level than everyone else then they need to prove it and stop playing teams that field only 25 players.
Best of luck to all SGV teams this year!

The timing of that news release relative to my last post is eery….I am happy that I was correct, though.

What’s with all the haters of Rio and Amat? Give it a rest people especially adults in here. I like HS football and am a big fan every friday nite. Altho my kid played at Amat and I am partial to Bishop Amat in every way, I am not rooting against any team in the SGV unless they play Amat, but after that it is on to the next game for all of us. Soloman, Venegas, Santiago, Ruiz, man these guys and many more put it on the line as athletes, the best we could all do is give them the support they deserve. As far as the Garfield game for Amat do you really believe Hagerty opened his playbook as Servite coaches were there pens in hand. My concern is the O and D lines as they look to be small and seemed to me like Garfields OL was winning that battle in the trenches. Question? was that Amats starters? Did Hags play players and hold some back? Rio enters the game and the offense looks like nite and day as Rio quickly made a differance. 14-0 of 3-quarters with Rio which includes that single set of offensive plays nothing special just enough to get in and out of this game. Come on Hagerty has a playbook and you will see it as the season goes on. You know Servite is the champion of the Pac5 and they are great but Hagerty loves those big game match ups. Cal Preps has 30-6 Servite winning this game, I see it much closer then that. Remember what most thought seeing Amat play Garfield at ELAC last year, the next thing you know it Amat is 9-0. First game means nothing but a feeler out game. Servite is loaded but they I am sure have some holes Hagerty and staff will exploit. Amat will come to battle rest assure of that. I like Amats chances especially with this coaching staff.

    @ Amat’s bully
Let me keep this simple for you
    1) I have been on this blog for the last couple of years. I don’t always post, sometimes I just read and laugh about comments by people like you.
    2) Your change of heart happened a month or two ago! Hard to believe, when last week you were talking about how you cheer for everyone in the SGV except Amat. I think you are getting delusional.
    3) why would I need a break after my last post, I can write books on clowns like you. No its you who gets tired after reading three sentences. I understand when you have a low IQ, you can only take so much. (Hope your not stuttering right now)

    4) THe most logical statement you made
“Mr. self proclaimed CO parents psychiatrist”. I really like this title, although it’s not self proclaimed. But at times I do feel this way.

    5) Please stop embarrasing Co, so many Co parents have complained about you. Your annoying them, like Mr. Huth did for Bonita.

  • Amat Bully

    Frank:
is the IQ thing the best you can do as an insult. “i can write books about clowns like you” LOL i would love to read that book or are you still busy comforting CO parents after the championship year, because it was so stressful after winning it all that the parents needed some psych treatment. Your a joke dude any CO parent that goes to you after all the non-sense bashing you do about CO has to be as unstable as you are. you bash CO a lot if any parent is complaining to you about me is definitely not a CO parent STOP WITH THE LYING FRANK.

  • Huh?

A lot of people are saying how Amat had a unimpressive start but if they are playing servite this week should they really run all their plays against garfield and show servite what they have? No they will show as little as possible then give eveything they got against servite.

    Lance R.
Good post, I agree with you lots of unnecessary
hating going on in this blog, all these kids put it on the line everyday in practice and under the lights, good luck to your Lancers this Friday.

  • Enough is Enough

    Jefe:

Just shut-up, and leave the KID alone! That’s right, including all you haters, hope you all feel good about putting a 16 year old kid down, and wishing the worst for him. Find something better and positive to do with your time.
