Tribune Super 35 Rankings: Charter Oak barely keeps top spot; Amat and West Covina right behind with huge road games on Friday

TRIBUNE SUPER 35 RANKINGS by Fred J. Robledo
1. Charter Oak (1-0) – Not an impressive start for the area’s top-ranked team, squeaking past Glendora 17-6 and scoring just three points in the second half at home. There’s a good chance they stay No. 1 for a while, especially with No. 2 Amat going to Servite and No. 3 West Covina going to Loyola. Chagers should open it up against visiting Roosevelt next.
2. Bishop Amat (1-0) – QB Rio Ruiz didn’t play the first quarter against Garfield, but he returned to help the Lancers to a 14-0 shutout over Garfield, a solid result considering this week’s opponent, Servite, had to be in the back of their heads. Amat finds out exactly where it stacks up on Friday against the team Hagerty calls, “Darth Vadar.”
3. West Covina (1-0) — Probably the most impressive team over the weekend, beating Covina in overtime 26-20, and doing it without reigning area player of the year Chris Solomon for most of the game. But now they get Loyola, a step-up of gigantic proportions.
4. Damien (0-0) – Some say the Spartans looked mediocre in their last scrimmage, but it was just a scrimmage. Let’s reserve judgment until Friday night, when they host Roddy Layton and Diamond Ranch.
5. Bonita (1-0) – Aram didn’t rank them in the preseason top ten, but it’s clear they took big leaps forward with a rather easy 40-20 win over San Dimas in the Smudgepot. It probably gets tougher this week against Claremont.
6. Claremont (1-0) – The Wolfpack opened with a big 24-20 win over Kennedy, kind of a surprise considering how many players they lost from last season, including QB Daniel Kessler. But they were solid last year and probably are itching to face Bonita on Friday, who beat them last year.
7. Chino Hills (0-1) – Not ready to drop the Huskies more than a spot after losing to out-of-state Bear Creek just 36-34. We should have a better idea of how good they actually are against Santiago on Friday.
8. Arroyo (1-0) – The Knights won impressively 45-12 over Ontario and QB Steven Rivera was fantastic. Don’t expect the Knights to lose anytime soon.
9. Covina (0-1) – Like Chino Hills, the Colts only drop a spot after their thrilling 26-20 loss to West Covina in overtime on Saturday. I’ll predict this right now, Colts win nine straight heading into the playoffs.
10. South Hills (0-1) – Huskies played a great game despite losing to Colony, 30-29, a game they could have tied with an extra point in the final seconds. The Huskies should get on-track against St. Monica this week, then have the showdown at Monrovia.

The Rest: 11. Ayala (1-0), 12. Azusa (0-0); 13. Glendora (0-1); 14. San Dimas (0-1); 15. Rowland (1-0), 16. Diamond Ranch (0-1), 17. Los Altos (1-0), 18. Diamond Bar (0-1); 19. El Monte (1-0), 20. Pomona (1-0), 21. La Puente (0-0), 22. Rosemead (0-0), 23. Wilson (0-1), 24. Baldwin Park (0-1), 25. Walnut (0-1), 26. Duarte (1-0), 27. Ganesha (1-0), 28. Bassett (1-0), 29. Northview (0-1), 30. Sierra Vista (0-1), 31. Nogales (0-1), 32. Gladstone (0-0), 33, Workman (0-0), 34, Mountain View (0-1), 35. South El Monte (0-0).

In the past, when ever these ranking came out, they were usually based strictly on won loss records.

However, I wonder how next weeks rankings will come out if the following were to take place.

    1. If Amat loses to Servite by a point or less and Charter Oak wins by a point or more, who gets top billing ?

    2. If West Covina kills Loyola, and Amat gets blown out, but, Charter Oak (like wise) wins by a point who then ?

    3. What if Amat were to lose on a last play of the game type of a scenario and at the same time Charter Oak just blows out their opponent. Who gets it ?

    4. Better yet, what if Basset were to blow out their team, and if Charter Oak and Amat were to both lose, who would be higher ranked ? Basset is not undefeated and according to the history of this poll, its your won loss record, not the quality of your opponents that make you number one. So…..

I guess that my point here has always been, the this rankings are always lots of fun because they generate lots of back and forth, amongst the bloggers, but really, they never truly reflect who the best team really is. Does it ? I mean really, does it ?

BTW, I still dont get why Aram has Charter Oak losing this week ????

  • Aaron

South Hills should drop…they’re facing St Monica’s…where did Bogan come up with that one. Pretty St Genevieve would kick the Huskies butts this year also.

    GO BEARCATS BEAT CLAREMONT!

  • NINEteen95

    Laan cers,
Laan cers, come out and plaaaayyy!

The Black Friars are rolling down the 57 fwy to kick your a$$ 35 – 3.

    Start the Darth Vader music.

Win or Lose…..Amat is still the Best Program in the SGV! I know it hurts and you can all start with the Hate because you haters have been hating since day one, so here’s some more arrogant, brash, smack talk for you all to hate us more for, BUT then again….THAT’S WHAT CHAPS YOUR BASS SO MUCH ANYWAYS, THE FACT THAT WIN OR LOSE WE ARE STILL THE BEST PROGRAM IN THE VALLEY, HA, HA, HA, HA…..

Obviously the writers from the SGV doesn’t think Amat is the top team just check out the rankings. But hey i guess fans will be fans because even somewhere else Pomona is claiming to be the best in the SGV.

  • Amat Bully

    WILL SOLOMON PLAY THIS WEEK?

  • Dan

    Fred,
Covina should be 4th, right above Damein, we’ll know more as the season playes out but I think this Covina team is better than the Michael McD years. those 05/06 teams, were not as physical on the defensive front as the team that played on Saturday. The 05/06 teams couldn’t stop the Glendora run games when I saw them in both years, I think this years team would have. Nick Hynes, Johnny Padilla, Ceazar Murillo and the rest of the Covina “D” should give Covina the edge in that division, although Monrovia will have their chance to make a statement when they host Glendora this Thursday.

  • Dan

    Amat Bully,
Solomon is out for this week.

  • Amat Bully

    thanks Dan
well west co fans i had yall winning until i just found out Solomon is out. Now i have to go with loyola i just don’t see west co being a threat without Solomon. But good luck

  • AZTEC PRIDE

Dan I have a question for you? Do you ever remember watching a player from WEST COVINA by the name of Jesse Tauiliili, who played for WESCO a few years back? He’s now playing for Citrus College and plays very GOOD!

Citrus played West LA on Saturday and they beat them pretty good.

  • Unreal…

With Solomon out I’m going to have to retract my previous prediction of WestCo beating Loyola. Still pulling for WestCo but Solomon was the Homerun threat they needed to beat Loyola.

Sorry guys, I thought the game was going to be close with a West Covina “W”. Still think the game is going to be close but I think Loyola has edge. If Solomon can somehow make it back it would be huge for West Covina.

    Go AMAT!!!!

  • Colt74

I’m STILL taking WesCo over Loyola!
    Why?
Because we played WesCo and know what they have.

    GO GET EM’ BULLDOGS!

  • Dan

    Aztec Pride,
Glad to hear Jessie is doing well, he was a stud for West Covina, saw him at Citrus last year
in a few games and he did well then, I enjoyed sitting with his dad during those games and also at Citrus and West Co practices, say hi for me if you get a chance. My boy plays winter baseball this year and it looks like my Saturdays will be tied up, otherwise I would go watch the Citrus home games this year.

  • Seriously Dan???

your not suppose to disclose that kind if information just because somebody asks! Solomon’s status is up in the air, by no way shape or form is he officially ruled out!

  • Gas for Fire

Gotta throw “The Dog” a bone every once in awhile…..Ha, Ha, Ha, I jest, I actually like all SGV teams when they play outside the valley so I will be rooting for the Chargers vs. Rosey because the I.E. needs to be put in their place…The Inland is a bunch of Tier Two Teams, wanna be Pac 5, Here’s a prediction for ya! I predict St. Bonnie’s will ROLL CC this Friday Night! AMAT BULLY, you waste a whole lot of effort on something that’s really a non-issue. Amat vs. CO is AMAT 99.9% of the time but I know the one time is sweet. Keep pushing the dream!

  • jcaz

    To: “seriously Dan”

Uh…..you’d better take a look at Aram’s blog before you jump on Dan.

  • H.S. Football fan

Amat schedules Servite and West Co. schedules Loyola. Why is CO afraid to play with the “BIG BOYS”?

  • D-Mo

HS Football Fan, we have Corona Roosevelt, then RC in 2 weeks. Are you that much of a hater? Some of you whack jobs won’t be happy until CO plays every big team in SoCal.
Aram seems to think we’ll have our hands full this week, but that’s still not good enough for the haters like you. The only thing that will make you knuckleheads happy is a CO losing record.
Did it help DR and others to get hammered during the preseason? They limped into league play still trying to get the jets going.
Hell, you probably never even played did you “Fan”?

  • Converse-ly

Colt74 – but do IWW at Loyola has?

  • So???

    To: “jcaz”

Just cause Aram says something doesn’t mean anything! He’s jsut the media he doesn’t know shit! He can only assume like everyone else!

  • Whaaaaaaa?

    Fred,

You got Los Altos ranked #17??? Above Diamond Bar??? REALLY???

Mark my words brother…LA goes 3-7 this year. They win their first 3 games then go 0-7 to finish out the season.

  • 12th man

Can someone please giude me on this blog??? I want to cheer for CO.but before i can do that i need to know if CO has ever played(Servite? Mater Dei? Orange Lutheran? St. Bonaventure? Crespi? or perhaps someone else in a different division Thousand Oaks? Oaks Christian? Westlake? maybe they played Long Beach Poly? or perhaps Lakewood?..ok ok.. I’ll keep it in the Inland..have they played Corona Centennial?..I truly have no idea if CO has ever played any one of these teams..can someone please inform me if they have & what the results were?..Once i recieve that info..I can start analyzing & put numbers together to see if Charter Oak is a legitimate contender vs the top ranked schools in California~

  • What’s up cheerleaders???

I went to the CO game friday. They must not be able to afford cheer boxes this year, a few of the girls did not even know the cheers, and after touchdowns, the girls with the flags couldn’t even keep up with each other-CO..H…….S. What’s going on????

  • Thank you

D-Mo, I Guess you proved the point. Play tough teams everyweek Anne you’ll get hammered. I suppose the discussion is over – you answered our question

  • CO not ready for Inland

Dan Lol, Covina is not better than Monrovia… lol

Covina has Hynes, Monrovia has McCarthy/ Casas, edge Monrovia….

Covina has Padilla, Monrovia has Frazier edge Monrovia

Covina has Ainsworth, Mornovia has Ramirez edge Monrovia

Covina has a secondary of De la cruz, Venagas, and Carillo( with a cast on) Monrovia has Craft, Bryant, Ramirez edge monrovia

Covina’s WR core has Venegas, De La Cruz, Monrovia has Craft, Bryant, Williams, and Wingebach egde monrovia

Covina has Livingston, Monrovia has Frazier/Heyworth push or you can say edge Covina

Covina’s line has not produced a 1000 yard Rusher in the last 3 years, Monrovia has for the last 3 years, along with 3 other running backs gaining 600-800 yards Edge Monrovia.

I don’t see where Covina has the edge in the Midvalley Division…Monrovia is bigger faster, and well coached…I am sorry…Covina had several injuries in that game…That’s what made it close…I have Covina finishing 13-2 runners up in the Midvalley division…That’s a great season, and a much improved showing from last years let down.

  • jcaz

    Merlo,

You got me there….that was a pretty silly thing to say. Ha ha ha

  • merlo

Got your point though. Servite is pretty tough up front and their linebacker corp does a good job of stopping the run. The opponents are going to have to take it to their db’s to open up a little. Some play action and intermediate routes or taking advantage with seam routes.

  • weak

Of all the more significant football programs, Monrovia has the weakest schedule in the San Gabriel Valley.

Calpreps Strength of Schedule Cali Ranking:

    Covina #492

    Monrovia #558

Even Baldwin Park and Don Lugo play better opponents than Monrovia. If everyone had Monrovia’s schedule, they too would have players with great statistics.

  • question for weak….

Weak Lol, so will Covina make it to finals to prove they can beat Monrovia? Head up who wins?

  • Bueller….Bueller…..Bueller

I see where Covina has the edge in the Midvalley Division…Covina is bigger, faster, and well coached…plus they dress better and all have their own teeth. And more importantly…not one of the Colts has allegedly robbed and shot anyone this week.

  • Bueller…Bueller…Bueller

At Monrovia games the Refs are not signaling a touchdown…..they are just getting robbed….

  • question for weak….

Lol @ Bueller, covina fans are funny, you are probably at home throwing up Confetti in your living room right now…ahaha…you guys threw confetti up in the west covina game and you did not even score at that play… and lost the game. What a joke. You guys couldn’t score 3 tds on nor have the “edge” vs Whittier Christian in the playoffs, what a joke…you all are going to win out all the way until you Run into Village Christian or Maranatha in the 2nd rd….those olympic league teams muscle you guys up every time. Here is the kicker tho’ this is covina’s best shot to win the Midvalley…because the 18 starters you returned this year, I am sure a lot of those guys will be gone next year. Including Livinston, Hynes, carillo, venegas, de la cruz, etc…Guess what Most of our best players are Jr’s and soph’s….coming back for the 12-13 season. Soooooo really we not too worried about Covina…if Monrovia repeats…you won’t have worry about us…we will probably be in the southeast by then…well ill let you keep thinking covina has the edge in the Midvalley….The only people who believe that are the Covina fans or haters….either way both are equally bad.

  • D-Mo

Either CO is “over their heads in the Inland” or “CO doesn’t play tough enough SoCal teams”. Which is it? Is it both? Who plays top knotch teams every week? If a team looses by 35 pts, does that make you a better team?
“answered our question” – what, you got a whole team of haters with you?

  • Bueller…Bueller…Bueller

    question for weak….
Good luck fighting it out with Blair for League Title this year. Play a game before you spout off how good the kittens are…lol
I bet you had to use your fingers and toes to count how many points Covina lost by to West Covina by.
What was that again? 1 for 118?
I think St. Marys girls for wayward girl scouts has more CIF Championships than that!
Did Monrovia pick the colors green and white for your guys teeth? Dang…I’ve seen some pictures! You guys really should not smile.
    Here’s some advice: Tooth Brush.
Here’s more advice…Get by Glendora before you tell everyone how good you are…LOL!
See you in December! ( Even if you are just sitting in the stands supporting Covina )

  • X’s and O’s

Calpreps has West Covina projected to win 27-26

  • Dan

    @Seriously Dan???
Uhhh, disclose what imformation? Surf on over to Arams blog and you’ll see that its headline news, matter of fact I didn’t know myself till I saw the headlines, seems like Aaram made the call to WC, seems like they didn’t have a problem disclosing it.

  • oldschool

west covina did fine without solomon for 3 quarters they will be fine.remember they are in a weak division and a lot better than any other team. hopefully his sprain is not as bad as zach shay,s.

  • Whittier Christian Blue Blood

Hey Farris, you’re an Idiot. You guys couldn’t even finish your semi’s game against us and you guys were in full stride at that time. How do you suppose that you could beat a team like Monrovia? You guys were just an average team at best. You sound so pathetic and I know that the fans from Covina dont want to be represented by anything like you.

  • Bueller…Bueller…Bueller

Esperanza (Anaheim, CA) 49 Whittier Christian (La Habra, CA) 34

Esperanza 14.8 rating 3-7 last season
Congratulations on Whittier Christians CIF Championship last year! Oh wait, they got pounded when they were at full stride. Way to finish there Delbert!

What’s the matter? You couldn’t get the refs to call back touchdowns and long runs like in the game against Covina?
Don’t worry, third place in your league will still get you in the playoffs. If you make third.

    Keep em coming…

  • Covina is #5 in the Midvalley…and 0-1 why are they talking????

Hey whitter christian it was the 2nd round not the semis lol. Covina is small, and slow. They are just confetti throwing, wannabes, who will lose again to a team from the Olympic league. The funny thing is…covina is going to lose to pomona lol…Thats why they are number 5 in the Midvalley…Monrovia has its sites on back to back titles and a exit to the Southeast…Covina lost to west covina, and that was there season. Now they may or may not win the vvl and maybe they get to the semis this year, but no further. They don’t have the guts to go all the way…lol. Its really sad, who covina went out last year and how they will go out this year. Hahaha…Covina stop making the west covina game your whole season…it’s getting old. Step up win in the playoffs, face monrovia, then talk. You are too slow and to small for the midvalley..What a shame.

Jcaz and Merlo…Servite appears vulnerable on Defense. Their secondary is not the strength of their team and can definately be exploited….I just hope we can give Rio the time to exploit them. Go AMAT!!!

  • MonroVian

    Covina,
if you want to get by us (MONROVIA), you have to stop this guy! You are going to have to put your whole O line on this guy to get a chance! Do you want a list of the other Dozen guys you will have to STOP! Let me know??? All this crap you guys are talking is going to come back and bite you in the Ars…. And to think I actually liked you guys untill one of your DBAG parents, Student or Fan started yapping their pie holes!

If Charter Oak loses this week to Roosevelt it is not going to be a good year for them. They catch Roosevelt with an injured starting QB (hurt in scrimmage – used way too much). The 2nd QB was not impressive. If Charter Oak cannot beat the #3 team in the BIG VIII with no Qb, they can look forward to another one and done in the playoffs.

  • football fan

Wow, Wilson still in top 25 but Bosco Tech isn’t even rated after they beat wilson last week. Show the respect they deserve.
