Glendora, West Covina moving on after incident

Glendora coach Todd Quinsey and West Covina coach Mike Maggiore said that an incident in Friday’s game that resulted in Tartans player J.R. Smith suffering a broken nose and facial lacerations due to an alleged altercation between players has been discussed and reviewed on video by the schools. However, any action or suspensions that may have resulted due to the alleged incident will remain a private matter, both coaches agreed. Both coaches were also satisfied with how each side handled the situation. Quinsey said the parents of Smith are not seeking legal action and that both teams and parties are moving forward and want to put the incident behind them.

Tribskin Pick’em, your predictions and ours

Aram and I will go head-to-head in Tribskin Pick’em throughout the season with the loser buying lunch in December.
Last week: Robledo (18-5); Tolegian (15-8)
Season standings: Robledo (69-27); Tolegian (65-31)

Last week: Aram got me on two big games, taking Rancho Cucamonga over Charter Oak and Rosemead over San Marino, but I beat him in almost every other toss-up game, taking South El Monte over Nogales, La Puente over Wilson, Baldwin Park over San Gabriel Mountain View over Hoover, Don Lugo over Azusa and Brea over Diamond Bar — all games Aram missed, giving me a three-game lead for the week, and four-game lead for the season.
This week: More predictable games than any previous weeks, but there are some tough calls, like South Hills-Monrovia, Diamond Ranch-Bonita, and Serrano-Claremont, the rest I feel good about. West Covina should beat Diamond Bar, Amat wins big at home, Los Altos goes to 5-0. In fact, only four teams remain undefeated, Los Altos, Claremont, South El Monte and La Puente, and of all four, Claremont has the best chance to lose.

Aram will update later

PREPXTRA POSTGAME REWIND…

Friday’s games and predictions
Story: Bishop Amat 28, Damien 7 — It was a 7-7 game at half, then the Lancers scored three second-half touchdowns and picked Spartans quarterback Gage Pucci three times. Jalen Moore rushed for 191 yards and Rio Ruiz threw for 142 yards and three touchdowns.
Story: Rancho Cucamonga 21, Charter Oak 13– For all those who kept saying the Chargers would get blown out, they showed they can compete with the Inland’s best. Nothing to be ashamed of. They didn’t win their step up, but they didn’t take a step back either.
Story: Covina 42, Walnut 6 — Colts keep on rolling, but there is bad news. Quarterback Billy Livingston suffered a shoulder injury and left for the hospital. Let’s keep our fingers crossed that he’s OK.
Story: West Covina 20, Glendora 19 — The Tartans missed a 25-yard field goal with five seconds left that would have won it. What is that, three times the Bulldogs have escaped in the final minute? Either it’s a pattern or that’s what champs do — just win baby.
Story: San Dimas 31, Monrovia 14 — With or without McCarthy, this is a big win for the Saints at MTown, beating the defending champs in their own backyard. Plus, the Saints won without Dillon Corona, so both teams missed star players. For those keeping score, San Dimas leads the overall series 3-2 dating back to 2009.
For stories on other games, click our home page.
Bonita 50, Marshall 22 — Nice win for the Cats’ after a couple close losses. Maybe they’re Hacienda contenders after all.
Claremont 30, Rowland 20 — Raiders made a game of it, but the bottom line is the Wolfpack are 4-0.
Brea Olinda 34, Diamond Bar 6 — Yes, this was a step-up game for the Bahamas, but you wish they would have competed better. See Charter Oak if you don’t know what I mean.
Sierra Vista 21, Keppel 14 –– A competitive game for both teams, and a must-needed win for the Dons going into the Montview.
South El Monte 28, Nogales 16 — Someone reported back that the Tribune isn’t showing the Eagles any love or respect for their early season wins. Like everyone else, we didn’t see it coming.
Baldwin Park 26, San Gabriel 22 — Braves win again, but have a long way to go to compete with the big boys of the Valle Vista.
Chino Hills 37, Pomona 6 — I heard the score could have been much worse, but I get it, the Huskies were ready to beat up on someone after losing the way they did to Tesoro.
La Puente 28, Wilson 13 — Let’s be clear, the Warriors, not the Aztecs, are the Montview League favorites.
Los Altos 21, Ayala 17 — You wanted proof, here it is, over a Sierra League and Inland team. Yes folks, the Conquerors are back.
El Monte 35, Gladstone 0 – Mark my words, the Lions will be a contender in the Mission Valley.
Rosemead 23, San Marino 14 — Panthers hand San Marino its first loss. With Rosemead, Arroyo, El Monte and South El Monte, the MVL is legit. Now when’s the last time I wrote that?
Hart 42, Arroyo 17 — Knights lose a game that was delayed more than an hour because of lighting. SGV teams never fare well in that other Valley.
Don Lugo 30, Azusa 14 — Stepping up the schedule hasn’t worked out for the Aztecs.
Chino 23, Northview 0 — Vikings have a rough time on the road, but Chino’s good, real good.
Rancho Alamitos 43, Ganesha 7 –– Giants are no match.

Check out Charter Oak’s close call with Rancho Cucamonga with the Inland Insider and crew. Postgame highlights and interviews.

Thursday Final: Workman rallies in fourth to beat Montclair, 30-27; Diamond Ranch routs Chaffey 29-6 and Mountain View beats Hoover, 34-21

Thursday’s results
Workman 30, Montclair 27Workman High School quarterback Ryan Gomez led a game-winning drive in the fourth quarter to help the Lobos pull off a 30-27 victory over Montclair on Thursday at La Puente High.
The Cavaliers (1-3) led 27-22 when Gomez started the drive with a 45-yard run to the Cavaliers’ 35-yard line with 4:08 left. After moving to the 13, a bad snap forced the Lobos back to the 20 and facing third and 17.
After a timeout, Gomez connected with Elias Oropeza over the middle for a 20-yard touchdown pass with 3:08 left and, after a two-point conversion, the Lobos (2-1) led 30-27 and held on to win.

Diamond Ranch 29, Chaffey 6The Diamond Ranch High School football team took efficiency to unprecedented levels on Thursday. Without a single possession in the game’s first 19 minutes, the Panthers managed to take a lead they didn’t relinquish in a 29-6 win over Chaffey.
Mountain View 34, Hoover 21: – Ignacio Castanada was not about to let a Mountain View High School victory slip away. The senior running back returned a kickoff 91 yards for a touchdown seconds after Hoover had scored to lead the Vikings to a 34-21 nonleague victory Thursday night at Glendale’s Moyse Field.

Breaking News: Bishop Amat lineman Andrew Hauser transfers to Charter Oak, but he is not eligible for varsity football until 2012

Bishop Amat junior Andrew Hauser, a 6-foot-2, 235-pound offensive lineman who played on the Lancers’ 9-2 varsity squad as a sophomore, left Amat on Monday and transferred to Charter Oak. However, Hauser will not be eligible for varsity football until Sept. 20, 2012, having to sit out the rest of the season, and three games next year after playing in three games for Bishop Amat in September. Charter Oak filed a “limited eligibility” request to CIF so that Hauser could be eligible in all other sports except varsity football, which was granted. It’s a big blow for Amat, who is already thin on the offensive line, and another huge transfer-gain for the Chargers.

Update: I spoke with coach Hagerty, and what I can share on the record is that Hauser left the school on Monday over philosophical differences between player and coach. The team has spoken about it and is moving on, according to coach.

Shocking Allegations: Charter Oak assistant water polo coach files a discrimination complaint against Charter Oak High School, claiming he was fired because he was gay

Because of the nature of these allegations, I will not allow comments on this thread. You can click on the story, however, and leave comments there.

Above: Mitch Stein was fired from his job as a water-polo coach at Charter Oak High School a few weeks ago. He has filed a lawsuit against the school district claiming the termination was because he is gay. (Watchara Phomicinda / Staff Photographer)

A former high school water-polo coach filed a discrimination complaint against Charter Oak Unified School District and claimed he was fired last month because he is gay.
Mitch Stein, who worked as an assistant water-polo coach at Charter Oak High during the summer, said Principal Kathleen Wiard terminated him after receiving an anonymous letter complaining about photos found on his Facebook and Myspace pages.
Stein said the letter included two photos, one of him posing with two drag queens and the other of him about to eat a corn dog. According to the complaint, the letter’s author called Stein “unfit to coach” and threatened to go to the school board if he was not fired immediately.

Damien’s Gano on Amat: “If last year was a fist fight, we didn’t do very much of the punching.”

By Aram Tolegian
Last year’s Damien-Bishop Amat game was over in a flash. The Lancers put away their parochial rival to the northeast early and coasted to a 42-7 win. On Friday, the teams meet again and Damien coach Greg Gano is hopeful his team gives a much better showing. “If last year was a fist fight, we didn’t do very much of the punching,” Gano said. “We’re going to play them better than we did last year. Hopefully, we can play a little bit harder. I expect to. I hope there’s not a fear factor. There was a fear factor last year, but we got rid of that. There’s a respect factor. Those guys are a good football team.” Damien enters the game 2-0, but the Spartans hardly were impressive in getting past Diamond Ranch in Week 1 and routing a hapless Chaffey team last Thursday.
