Arroyo QB Steven Rivera is walking the walk, sets school records in big win over Temple City

| | Comments (4) |

Arroyo quarterback Steven Rivera broke a school record for touchdowns and passing yards in a game, throwing for 451 yards and six touchdowns in Friday's 48-21 victory over rival Temple City. The senior is off to an amazing start with 716 yards and ten touchdown passes in his first two games, averaging 358 yards. He eclipsed his own single-game record of five touchdown passes, which he accomplished last season against Mountain View, a mark he shared with Gabriel Agredano (1993) and Dominic Salmon (2005). For the single-game passing yardage record, Rivera passed Agredano's record of 414 yards, which was set in a 1993 playoff loss to Anaheim. If we handed out players of the year after two weeks, Rivera wins it hands down.

Arroyo QB Steven Rivera is an outstanding player and kid. Very impressed by what he is able to accomplish on Friday nights! He is certainly a gamer.. He seems like he is on a mission this year for sure. A CIF playoff victory would mean a great deal I'm sure. People definitely need to get out and see this kid before it's too late... one of the most prolific passers in Valley history when it's all said and done. Good luck to Steven and the Knights the rest of the way!

I would have expected some more reaction on this article, but only two comments??? Really??? I guess Steven Rivera would have to play for Bishop Amat, West Covina, or Charter Oak to get praise from anyone in the SGV. What makes it truly ironic, is that Rivera is the top rated QB in the SGV, and in the top 10 in the whole state of CA!!! When will you people open your eyes and realize that Rivera is the real deal, and a damn good QB!!? One more thing, for all you people who say he plays in a weak division etc, etc...he can play with the best of the best players, and in any league or division. YES, he's that good!

I will be back at Arroyo High to cover Friday night's game for the Trib. vs. 2-0 Montebello. Hope to see another great turnout of Knight fans supporting the their team. Somebody will lose their first game of the season and the other will remain unbeaten.

I covered the game for the Trib. Rivera played just like a four-year starter, calm and cool under pressure. Arroyo ran the shot gun formation and he had plenty of time to find this open receivers. By halftime, Rivera completed 21 of 25 passes for 4 touchdowns and 321 yards.

Big props to Arroyo High staff and boosters. The game program had all the school's team and individual records. It was clear he was going to surpass a few single game records.

The game ended around 9:50pm and story was due at 10:30pm, son I didn't have time to interview Coach Singiser or Rivera. Obvious question was when did Rivera knew he broke or was close to breaking the records for yards and touchdowns.
