Tribskin Pick’em, your predictions and ours

Aram and I will go head-to-head in Tribskin Pick’em throughout the season with the loser buying lunch in December.
Last week: Robledo (15-3); Tolegian (15-3)
Season standings: Robledo (129-40); Tolegian (127-42)

Last week: Aram and I both went 15-3, but we took different roads there. We both missed taking Los Altos over Bonita, but I also missed taking South Hills over Damien, and Walnut over Diamond Bar. Aram lost taking Crespi over Bishop Amat and for whatever reason, Wilson over Northview. Our race is shaping up, with three weeks left and playoffs, I’m up by two.
This week: After calling Amat on the road at Crespi, I’m calling them at home on Friday too. They’ve already lost one Serra home game, you think they’re going to lose two? On homecoming? In another must-win? I don’t think so, but Aram does. I don’t think Tolegian will pick Amat to win any Serra games. As great as Damien has been in recent weeks, I think they lose the next two weeks and wind up finishing third in the Sierra. Chino Hills and Charter Oak will play for the league title at the end, and Chino Hills will show why by doing its part. Of course, Tolegian disagrees again. The other game Tolegian and I disagree on is Northview-Nogales, I like the Vikes, he likes the Nobles. Rosemead could screw up the Mid-Valley with a win over Arroyo, but don’t count on it. West Covina has another test at Los Altos, but the Bulldogs are passing all tests these days.

  • Wrong again Freddy

You Have been wrong alot picking against us Fred. You will be wrong again. Much respect to Chino Hills, but Damien is a faster team, with more weapons this year. Fred, I thought you learned your lesson last week, hopefully Aram goes with Sparty again!!!

  • shfan

I’d fix your Bassett pick and add an Azusa pick…

  • lol

wrong again. really? much faster? Have you seen them play? Have you seen them hit? I think you have that wrong being sparty is fast yes but faster no! Smaller yes! The huskys held claremont to 1td the other was a joke hook and ladder play that they were caught sleeping on.

  • Aaron

    Bearcats over DBar.

  • SGV LANCER FAN

First off, I’m glad to hear that Crespi player C. Peoples is going to be alright. Very Scary! I’m sure all the prayers from both sides helped out…..Caught the game on Friday and all I can say is WOW! The Amat offense handled their business and Z. Shay definately adds a new demension to that offense! The cubs will have their hands full. But everybody is talking about the Offense when I was really impresed by the DEFENSE! Talk about flying to the ball! These guys were EVERYWHERE! Gang tackling, swarming and shutting the run down! Crespi’s big tackles did little to thwart the AMAT DEFENSE. If they can keep away from giving up the big play and cotinue to improve week by week, this defense will take them into the playoff’s. Two picks and a complete shut down of the run game was awesome to watch!!! For a much maligned Defense, these boys STEPPED UP!!! Keep it going on BOTH SIDES OF THE BALL AMAT!!! How about making some picks with your head instead of your heart and your need to keep c.o. at the top of your poll Aram? Amat over Loyola on Friday night and you know it! Great Job to the Boys in Blue and Go Lancers!!!!

  • W-L Chills vs Damien

SOS. Damien win/loss stats from teams they have played 25w – 30L below .500 average Chino Hills win/loss 26w- 19L they have played some very good teams as of now hopefully heres where that difficult preseasoning pays dividends!

  • almost forgot

CO teams played. 24W- 26L just below .500 OUCH! But they have been crushing these powerhouse teams! haha

  • patrick

@ Aaron, did you even bother looking at the schedule before you posted??? Look again chief!

  • Sierra League Fan

    Wrong again freddy,

Damien has lost big to Chino Hills the last 3 years and it will be the same again. Damien is a “faster” team…..than Chino Hills??? Ummmm No, You guys have have picked up a couple of quick “munchkins” but that is all. You guys struggled with Claremont a couple of weeks ago….needing to score 2 TD’s in the last 5 minutes to seal the game. Chino hills victory was never in doubt. If it weren’t for a hook and lateral right before the half, it would have been over then. The score would have been much worse were it not for so many ridiculous penalties against CH.
Chino Hills played a very tough pre-league schedule and it is paying off. The combined records of Chino Hills opponents is 32-19 with only 1 team with a losing record (Ayala). On the other hand, Damien has played a very soft schedule besides Amat (opponents records 25-27). They have played only 2 teams with winning records (Amat and Claremont). I do agree Damien is better this year, but they are the 3rd place team in the Sierra league. My prediction is Chino Hills 35… Damien 17.

  • Spartan vs. Husky

Nice stats statman. Chino Hills is bigger but they are slower. Damien has alot more speedsters that can break off 80 yds at any moment. Damien gave up 10 pts against Claremont at Claremont (31-10) stat guy so whats your point. Don’t be mislead about our loss against Amat. That game was 7-7 half way through the third quarter. Amat out coached & out played Damien in the 4th. We are smaller in some spots, but have out hit all of our opponents accept for maybe Amat. Chino Hills is the defending Champ so much respect to them. But, this is a much tougher more talented group at damien, & Chino Hills is alot younger than last year. Damien & Chino Hills are both going to be competing for the Sierra League title along with Charter Oak next year. Both teams are good enough, but I think Damien’s weapons are more than you know. Six teams have talked about our height & lost. Hopefully seven now!!! lol

  • Sierra League Fan

    Spartan vs husky,

“Six teams have talked about our height & lost. Hopefully seven now!!! lol”

5 of those 6 teams have losing records and a combined record of 19-25. I wouldn’t get to overconfident. We have played teams with great team speed (Santiago and Pomona) and handled both just fine…. LOL

Your game vs Claremont was 17 -10 in the 4th…they were even leading you guys in the 3rd. You needed a pick 6 with under 2 minutes left to seal the deal…lol. Our game was 35-14 with 7 minutes left before we started subbing. We could have scored again but decided to run the ball ( inside the 20 ) and then take a knee.

  • John

Amat needs to execute the same way they did against Crespi minus the end of the first half gaffe and the numerous motion penalties on first down. Short passes, swing passes, screens, and the usual dose of Moore should be the offensive game plan. They wouldn’t be wise to air it out and test the standout Loyola secondary of Anderson and Whitfield who have scored a few return touchdowns from interceptions this season including one last game in a 27-14 victory against SO ND. The Loyola QB Cotton is not great but solid. He does enough to put points on the board and lets his receivers make the plays. It never hurts when he has a Stanford and Boise State committ to catch the ball. The Amat secondary will have their hands full but they’ve been performing fantastic. I’ve always said they have the best backfield in the Serra and one of the better groups in the PAC 5 if not the whole southern section. They don’t have the big names like Loyola but they have the depth in Daniels, Montes, Blue, Alcantara, and Ruiz.
Like always, the Amat line will be smaller. Loyola averages about 6’1 and 240 according to Maxpreps. They got a couple sacks against SO ND last week so the Amat front needs to execute. The game is going to be close. Loyola currently has the best shot of winning the Serra and a victory this Friday guarantees them a playoff spot. If Amat can reduce the mental errors and not be distracted from all the homecoming festivities, they should squeeze out a win.

  • John

    Correction:

I previously wrote a win would guarantee Loyola a playoff spot, however I realized Loyola only played one game in the Serra. Thus, playoff berths are still up in the air for everyone.

  • LA Futbol

    FRED!!!

Where is our SGV Football Statistics Leaderboard?!?!?! Come on man! This can’t be that difficult to compile. Find someone in the office who can get it done! I wanna see where our boys rank in rushing, passing, recieving, tackles, etc!

  • Pac 5 fan

According to ESPNLAPreps Bishop Amat is ranked number 14 and Loyola is ranked number 15 in the top 25 poll. It seems these two teams are evenly matched. I will go with Amat at home vs the Cubs. Its a league game and these two teams know each other real well so it should be a close one. I have a hunch that Amat will surprise many people and go deep come playoff time. But hey, thats just my prediction.

  • lol

lol. who’s your starting qb this week? I hope he can run fast..

  • TeachDGame

Sierra League Fan…. one thing is for sure, I would be absolutely flabbergasted if your first comment that “Damien has lost big to Chino Hills the last 3 years and it will be the same again.” were to come true. Damien is NOT the same team you have played the last 3 years, and if you look in the mirror, neither is Chino Hills.

First, I am not sure any of the Sparty comments have been directly targeting that Damien is “faster” than Chino Hills, but rather that Damien is faster than it has been in the past. That is fact. Damien’s “additions” are munchkins, that is fact. Chino Hills absolutely does not have the phenom stud playmakers they have had the last couple of years and that is fact.

Having just watched your game against Claremont, since you want to make that the ONLY comparison point with regard to this upcoming game… your point in comparing the common opponent I guess. Noted off the top of my head at least 15-20 missed tackles by Claremont which allowed you to have huge gains from your “pistol” offense with the QB and or RB taking the ball upfield. I can guarantee you that DE & LB’s from Damien are far better athletes than what you faced against claremont. I know that for sure. Now, hopefully the they will play that way and not miss the god awefull amount of tackles that Claremont did. By the way, there is not a single person who would say that the Claremont game was Damien’s best game of the year, so of course we must play far better against Chino Hills than we did against Claremont. You guy’s are a much better team and obviously the mistakes made in that game that were able to be recovered from may in fact not be recoverable in the game against you.

If Damien’s DE & LB’s play how they are capable and maintain their assignments against your Pistol run game, then your 2 leading rushers (the QB & #45) may not get off like they have. Your QB is very good size and a quality athlete, but the RB I would not think will punish the “size” of Damien since he is in the same range (albeit, probably as strong as a horse I’m sure you guy’s do a great job in the weight room). Again Damien has to play good defense and maintain their assignments against your offensive scheme.

If forced to throw, your main receiver #3 does have a little size advantage over your proclaimed “munchkins”, however your second leading receiver does not… so it will come down to how your coaches “scheme” against the vulnerability of Damien’s defense… something the teams so far have not been able to do…

All of this goes down to a lot of analysis of who is stepping on the field in 4 days and the reality of what they bring to the field of battle, not merely the fact that “we have beat you big the last 3 years so it is going to happen again” theory you want to bring. You guy’s have played an outstanding preleague schedule. But remember one thing, I can guarantee when you faced all of those “tougher” teams, they did not look at you in the same light as the Damien boy’s will on Friday night. You were a “warm up game” to their league schedules…. not a team standing between them and a league championship.

I for one think it is going to be an oustanding football game. It will come down as it usually does to whomever makes the fewer mistakes and which team can step up and make the big play when they need to. Don’t think it will be a Chino Hills steam roller again.

Have you even bothered looking on the Preps main page…the big blue box that says Maxpreps….then click on the tab tab says leaderboard????

I know for a fact it was there all of last year too.

  • FredJ

Colt, the reason I created the SGV Maxpreps Widget, which I posted a few threads down, is so you can look at the leaders in all categories from coaches who post stats…..

  • Colt74

    Fred,
I know. La Football was asking for information that is already in that widget. I was directing him to that widget.

  • Aaron

    Patrick…you right…Cats over Walnut.

  • RJSpartan

The last 3 scores of Damien and Chino Hills:42-7 last year,38-6 in 09,45-14 in 08. All huge Chino Hills wins.

This is the perfect year for Damien, they have their best team in years and this is both Chino Hills worst team in years in terms of talent and impact players.

I am a biased Damien guy and I’ve known they couldn’t hang with them the past 3 years in terms of pure talent. But I really think they get a win this year.

  • AMAT 73

    RJSpartan,
Seems to me you guys were trying to say the same thing when you faced AMAT this season.

  • Colt74

    Aram,
    What’s a Choviva?

  • Colt74

    Typing, take 2…..

    Aram,
    What’s a Chovina?

  • Lance R

Cal Preps has Loyola 31 Bishop Amat 17???? Should be closer then that. Amat will come to play at home you can count on that. Shay’s return gives them a added new dimension that has opened up the offense quite a bit more. Cal Preps also had Crespi defeating Amat so you cannot go by some of their predictions. As far as Aram dude would not even salute the Flag during the National Anthem when Amat played Alemany so he deep down does not really like Amat. He argues with Fred and interupts Fred on Amat issues. Aram your body language speaks for itself when it comes to Amat. Clean it up Big Boy.

  • AMAT 73

    Lance R,
Did you notice Aram looked kind of perturbed when he knew he had to take Fred’s call and the fact that AMAT won didn’t seem to fit to well with him.

  • Frank

Its obvious Aram, is an Amat hater. When Fred talks about Amat, Aram always has a smirk on his face. You can tell he doesn’t want to hear it. He quickly dropeed Amat in rankings after loss to Alameny, in a game that could of gone either way.

  • paul revere

Colt 74, it’s a code word, for chockvina… Aram is a professional so he left out “ck”… Your #1 now….pressure pressure pressure. The Playoffs are coming, the playoffs are coming…

before you attack my spelling lmao

  • smallcitymc

USC must of been watching tape on Amat. Their game plan against ND looked like Amat’s. Amat’s coaching staff did a great job.

Calpreps predictions are based on the games being played on a neutral field. With that said, they still have a prediction accuracy rate of close to 80%, excellent by any standards. Do I believe Loyola will win? As good as Loyola is, Amat has the edge. I think Fred pretty much summed up why.

  • Cornwallis

    Paul Revere,
Oh..so if Aram was talking about you guys and your chances this year it would be Nonrovia.

    I get it!

  • Aztec Pride

Alright Coach Scherf. Let’s be READY fori week TEN…

  • Paul Revere

Cornwallis…that does not even sound cool or funny….but what is funny is Whittier Christian just beat #1 maranatha….and they are going to be in your bracket….the playoffs are coming the playoffs are coming…pressure pressure pressure…Chokevina lmoa….

  • Dan

    Paul Revere,
Maranatha was a paper tiger, never should have been at number 1, with the caliber of teams they played they would have had some major blowouts if they were on the level of Covina or Monrovia,or San Dimas. Whittier Christian struggled with Maranatha and lost to Cantwell, the Olympic is down this year, My bet is Covina’s biggest threats will come from Pomona, Monrovia and if they have to face San Dimas a second time it could be a lot tougher. I think the O-line and front 7 will be the difference for Covina this year, the Colts look as good as the better Sierra or upper Hacienda league teams.

  • Paul Revere

Dan, you are correct. I was just rattling The Covina fans cage. I don’t think Maranatha is on the level of Covina or Monrovia or San Dimas…How ever, Whittier Christian is a proven program in the Midvalley, who just seems to play well during the playoffs. I agree that Covina’s front 7 is dominate, but I think their Back 4 are suspect. In the San Dimas game, SD had their chances, and did not make plays. They dropped a TD, The got shoved on a goal line stance where they ran 4 straight Dives to Corona….I was surprised how their WRs got behind the Covina Dbs. Their largest Gains were deep passing plays… Up to date, Covina has not played a team who can throw. Now, come playoffs Covina will see at least 1 of 3 teams who do Throw. Maranatha,Whittier Christian, and Monrovia…Which Covina still has the speed advantage in 2 of those 3 match ups…I think Monrovia is the only team that can beat Covina…If their wr get a step…there is no catching them from behind. I would love to see that match up in a semi Finals or Finals game…however Monrovia can lose, just like anyone else in the division….Watch out for Pomona and San Dimas later on…Really it’s wide open….

  • Serra predictions

    1. Loyola beats Amat and Alemany in close games and finishes 4-0 for the league title

    2. Alemany pounds Crespi, wins a close game vs. ND and looses a close game to Loyola and finishes 3-1 and 2nd place in league

    3. Amat looses a close game at home to Loyola goes on the road a looses a close game to ND and finishes 1-3 and tied for the last playoff spot with ND and Crespi

    4. ND beats Amat in a close game and looses to Alemany in a close game to finish 1-3 and a 3 way tie for the last playoff spot

    5. Crespi was fortunate to beat ND got pounded by Amat and will get pounded by Alemany and Loyola. By far the worst team in the league but will still finish at 1-3 and in a 3 way tie for the last playoff spot.

Just my predictions and not necessarily the way I would like for it to go down. Does anyone know what the tie breaker procedure is in the Serra league?

  • Old school

When Amat was with Servite, MD, and the like therey were ina 3 way tie for 3rd when all parties had beat each other. At that time the tiebreaker was a simple coin flip and Amat was out of the playoffs -even though they had a better overall record.
