Amat update: Rio Ruiz has sprained knee, MRI this week; will likely miss Notre Dame game

Bishop Amat quarterback Rio Ruiz hyperextended his left knee in Friday’s 14-3 loss to Loyola, his father Rudy Ruiz said. Rudy Ruiz said x-rays over the weekend were negative, and that the family is scheduling an MRI this week. Rio will probably not play the Serra League finale on Friday at Notre Dame, according to his father, because the knee is still sore. “He’s very sore and we don’t have anything official yet without the MRI,” Rudy Ruiz said Monday. “The good thing is that he’s walking around the house without his crutches.” If Amat beats Notre Dame or somehow makes the Pac-5 playoffs, Rio will be re-evaluated with two weeks off before the playoffs start. Also, Amat senior linebacker Andrew Varella, one of the best defensive players on the team, did no play in Friday’s loss against Loyola, a disciplinary decision made by the school and coaching staff. No word on whether Varela will return for Friday’s game at Notre Dame.

Bishop Amat is right at #16 in the pac 5 playoffs race. If they win they are in…if they lose another Pac 5 team would take their place…Here is the kicker…”IF” they were to make the playoffs …Would Bishop want Rio to risk his future, on a sprained knee, playing a number one seed as a at large team…You Might be playing Poly…IDK…He is also the schools best baseball player as well…the baseball team actually could repeat as CIF Champs…..I think Rio should pack it up and heal for baseball…The stakes are too high..too much to lose…It’s not quitting…it’s called being injured. 2 weeks is not enough time for a sprained Knee to heal. Which is a million dollar knee…I might add. High school kids don’t get cortisone shots…I think Bishop is done this year …Sorry Lancers ….No Pac 5 title for us SGV fans this year. Its official.

It was a good run~ Rio’s football career is done!!..No way you risk your future…A bruised knee could easily just have been a torn ACL which would pretty much end your career in any sport…The season was done when they faced Servite the Lancers lost more that night then just the game…They lost there confidence & the defense got exposed for the 1st time..Shay got hurt as well as Alcantara & Amat never fully recovered…Even if Rio is healthy I just didn’t see them making any noise in the playoffs…They just dont have the size & athletic ability to compete for a Pac5 championship…Hope to see them rebuild next year & hopefully get some big guys up front.. One thing i know for sure is that Amat never lacks “Heart” in every game they play, They give 100 percent until the final whistle..Good luck the rest of the way & i hope too see Rio in the MLB in about 2 years…

A torn ACL ends your career in any sport? Really? Not anymore! However, I agree Rio needs to hang up his football cleats.

Amat has two returning Baseball players with football injuries…Ruiz and Alcantara. Wonder what that does to the Lancers prep for next season? I wonder how Coach Nieto feels about this? The Lancers are defending Champs and they better be ready for next years run!

I would be real surprised if Rudy lets Rio get back out on that football field again. Hey lets be real here when Rio went down I was hoping that it was the air knocked out of him and kept saying to myself “come on Rio get up”, never from a selfish point like come on we have a game to win here but from a “that’s 2 million dollars laying out there” From a business standpoint. As a Amat guy I want the best for this young man and lets face it if our line was bigger and Rio was very well protected I could see him considering a football comeback if there was a playoff berth. With that small line he is constantly having to scramble to make the big pass. Rio has a big future in Baseball and the risk is not worth it. Koa will be fine and a new chapter of Amat football begins with Koa Friday, from there Koa gets better and blossoms as the next QB for Amat unless someone down the road comes in and takes the job from him. To Rio and Rudy you did your best and you could have passed on the season altogether but you gave us something special and now it is time to think business minded. Support the team the rest of the way and get Rio to the batting cages there is money to be made.

The Money is already made! It’s just a formality at this point. Rio could sit this year out and still get drafted. The kid has shown he has the necessary tools to go forward in the game.

Congratulations to Rio and his dad regardless the decision. Rio will never look back with any regrets, or ask the what ifs… Too many paranoid people live their life around what could happen. We are all mortal! I want thank the Ruiz family and wish them the very best. What a great kid, respectful and hard working. Good luck and thanks for doing it right.
