Amat update: Rio Ruiz has sprained knee, MRI this week; will likely miss Notre Dame game

Bishop Amat quarterback Rio Ruiz hyperextended his left knee in Friday’s 14-3 loss to Loyola, his father Rudy Ruiz said. Rudy Ruiz said x-rays over the weekend were negative, and that the family is scheduling an MRI this week. Rio will probably not play the Serra League finale on Friday at Notre Dame, according to his father, because the knee is still sore. “He’s very sore and we don’t have anything official yet without the MRI,” Rudy Ruiz said Monday. “The good thing is that he’s walking around the house without his crutches.” If Amat beats Notre Dame or somehow makes the Pac-5 playoffs, Rio will be re-evaluated with two weeks off before the playoffs start. Also, Amat senior linebacker Andrew Varella, one of the best defensive players on the team, did no play in Friday’s loss against Loyola, a disciplinary decision made by the school and coaching staff. No word on whether Varela will return for Friday’s game at Notre Dame.
