Why Joe Amat says Amat is No. 1

Joe Amat, one of the founding bloggers and expert on anything to do with CIF, wrote in the “Super 35” rankings thread that in a power poll, Bishop Amat is his No. 1. What a surprise. But I love it when when JMAT gets going like this, when he’s got a point to make, he makes his point. I don’t know who he was responding to in this comment, but he opens talking about a Charter Oak-Bishop Amat matchup.

Joe Amat: “You want them to play every year? Not realistic. In some years it would be good-others…not so much. Now remember, since the inception of this blog I have never said that we played a game that we could not lose. Why schedule someone if there isn’t a chance they can beat you? Same way with CO and WC. Each of those teams “could have” won. We put it on the carpet a couple times, penalties to call back score, or a pick he or there, the game changes. It could happen, but the odds (and results) are on Amat’s side ina big way.

Amat played CO two years in a row when CO was the preseason #1 and Amat was a non playoff team. Amat swept them with CO getting shut out 1 year and a garbage time TD the other. CO opted out of the third year. Amat replaced them with Rancho Cucamonga (who Amat also swept) and CO went to Damien (who CO lost to)

Amat swept WC 42-6 in a year WC went 10-3 (not too shabby) before losing to Diamond Ranch in the semis (who Amat also beat) and Then “they went toe to toe” with us in a 21-7 loss the next year and stopped playing last year. west Covina continues to challenge someone at higher levels and that makes them better. You learn and improve more by getting tested than blowing people out.

Which is why Amat took a lot of heat even when we played the COs , Glendoras, Damiens, West Covinas, Diamond Ranchs, Ranchos. Too soft a schedule. Then they win in their division and people clamor for a matchup. Now you want us to play again?

Enjoyed seeing other lists and love to see more. The reason I set my “Power Poll” with Amat at the top is due to facts and proof. Amat has proved -this year and in recent years–they can beat teams close caliber of a CO/WC like Venice and Damien, AND teams better like Crespi. Iin very recent history there is long list of victims better than any either of those teams have defeated. CO and WC haven’t shown they can *win* the games against the Ranchos, Vista Murriettas, Mater Deis, Loyolas, etc.. Pllay them tough…tie…but not win

They get kudos when “they go toe to toe with the best” (like Fred questionably wrote after the CO/RC game)and thats worthy of moving UP on the list? Amat loses to Alemany by 5 and the sky is falling. WC gets a pass due to injuries, but Amat playing a 7-3 game before their best two-way player goes down against the #5 team in the State is cause to move them below the Bulldogs? OK for “a list” or “ranking (beauty contest) but not for a “Power Poll” based on who would beat teams below them.

Amat is at the top of my list because of what we know, have seen, and has been proven. CO or WC would go there because of what you might “think”. But you have the right to “think” that….even if you’re wrong ;-D

Joe Amat’s Power Poll (assuming Rio plays, explaints Joe)
1. Bishop Amat (5-2)
2. Charter Oak (7-1)
3. Chino Hills (5-3)
4. West Covina (7-1)
5. Damien (6-2)
6. Ayala (3-5).
7. South Hills (3-5)
8. Covina (8-1)
9. Claremont (4-4)
10. Glendora (3-5)
