    Fred,
Why hasn’t the tribune reported the update on Rio?? This has to be one of the top stories..Is Amat trying to use leverage on not reporting his status or is the paper not doing its job??… Im sure the response will be the Doctor has not given the release yet….But with 3 days left Amat should know who their starting QB will be???

  • Joe Amat

i’m hearing it will be a game day decision

  • 12th man

    Joe Amat,
In my past experience when teams say it will be a gameday decision this usually means bad news~…They are trying to buy time & not give anything out..I hope this isnt the case but im sure if Rio was playing it would have already been reported..Anyways thanks for the update!

  • Fred Robledo

There is nothing “new” to report, Rio sees a doctor on Thursday and Friday will be a game-time decision according to Hagerty. If you want my guess/opinion, I think Haynes will start. But certainly the coaching staff is smart not to announce their intention until game day. Might as well keep Santa Margarita guessing.

  • 12th man

I feel bad for the fans who are making the long drive hoping for a chance to see Rio pull off the upset only to find out that Haynes will start~…The question now becomes..Do the coaches owe the fans any type of loyalty on announcing who the starter will be before gametime? Will the ticket sales go down if Rio doesn’t play?…Fred & his staff are staying pretty quiet on this one~

12th man (aka “benchwarmer?” wasn’t Scoby and Santiago game day decisiosn too? That ended up being good news!

  • 12th man

Just Askin (A.K.A. Clueless on the game!!)
You cant compare injuries or the magnitude of the 2 seperate games…I hope Rio plays this would give Amat its best chance of winning..Does anyone know if Rio is out there practicing in pads? Or is it top secret?

  • Rio is the man

Will it be Rio 9 Ruiz or Koa “Interception” Haynes? I say Amat’s seniors will be the sacrificial lamb and say Koa will start. He’s gonna need as much experience as possible for next year….provided he will stay at Amat for the next 2 years. Too many defections, Amat’s football future has too many uncertainties.

  • AMAT 73

    12th man,
Evidently you are not as knowing on AMAT football as you think. Doesn’t matter to The Family who will start. The AMAT Family will be there regardless as long as the AMAT LANCERS are taking the field . If it’s Haynes or Rio, AMAT WILL SHINE !!!!!!!! We just need all The Men in Blue to go all out and put all on the field .

  • 12th man

    Amat 73,
I never claimed to know the families..& if they would or wouldn’t go to the game & that has nothing to do with the actual game.. But what I do know is that BA attendance at football games has been down & so has the energy level..I have nothing to gain by not telling the truth..I feel you are sadly mistaken if you feel that the average fan (not family or alumnis) will be willing to make the 1 hour drive (thats if no traffic) to Saddleback College if they were to find out that Rio will not play~ How do I know?? Because I am that average fan!!

  • just askin’

“not good enough to be in the top 11″ – you said:
“In my past experience when teams say it will be a gameday decision this usually means bad news”

just last week we had two game day decisions that were not bad news.

    That. Is. All.

  • BraveDad

    Advice to Amat Fans:

To save yourselves time and stress from traffic, take toll roads. 57 to the 91, to 55, off at Oso Pkwy, turn left and you’ll hit the toll road once you go through the canyon. It’ll cost you $7, but you’ll get there in 40 minutes or less.

  • fb102

12th man, Get a GRIP and some PERSPECTIVE
Please do not turn the FOCUS of Amats playoff game(s) on the status of RR.

I DO realize that having RR in the game probably gives Amat a better CHANCE to win game(s), BUTwhat about the rest of the T E A M? One PLAYER alone CANNOT win a game by himself.

Whatever happens this week in practice will determine who plays in the game. THAT is how Hags and the coaching staff choose who plays. IF it is RR, fine, if it is Koa H. fine too. If Hags does not want to reveal/report who the starting QB is going to be that is HIS prerogative.

TRUE fans will make the drive to Mission Viejo[IF possible] regardless if ONE player is will play OR not play .Its called fan LOYALTY to the T E A M. The coaches and players only owe THEMSELVES the best week of PREPARATION and PLAY during the game. Whether fans show up or not, the game WILL be played. You DO have the CHOICE to attend another game if like.

I am hoping the Lancers come out and play to the best of their abilities on Offense, Defense and Special teams and leave it ALL on the FIELD and emerge victorious

  • Witness

@12thchick, I consider myself an average fan and I will be there to Witness Amat play SM…Rain or Shine. Santa Margarita is a great team and we all know that, but you never know what will happen until the game is played.

Go Amat! Shock the world(our little high school football world)

Drive safe everyone and good luck to all the SGV teams…may no one get hurt.

  • 12th man

During these playoffs…Does Charter Oak win without Santiago?? Does Arroyo win without Rivera?? Who knows?? But i do know that they would significally improve their chances if they do play…So yeah!! One player can make a difference..Instead of arguing or debating all night with Amat fans or anyone else who reads this thread lets just guess on the final score & see who comes the closest…SM-35 BA-21(Rio playing) 38-14 (without) If im wrong I will gladly eat some humble pie~

  • BraveDad

Sorry, it’s Chapman East exit off the 55. Go through canyon to the 241 and then exit 241 toll road at Oso Pkwy. Go right to Margarite pkwy and hang a left and then a left into the parking lot. Its a few more miles on the car, but way faster.

  • Joe Amat

So here’s the deal. Every coach I heard at the CIF office says the same thing. This is the Pac5 playoffs and anyone can beat anyone (almost). Harry Welch himself said that he thinks any one of 12 teams could win the whole thing. Amat is somewhere among that group. Nothing would shock me.

Do some teams have better odds? Sure. But we have seen enough crazy things happen and twisted results that we know you have to come to play and EVERY play makes a difference.

Santa Margarita is a great team, led by a great and legendary coach. I loved Hags’ line about wishing he and Harry were playing. I’d take Hags in that one too. But the bottom line is, while they are unbelievably well-coached and play extremely hard and disciplined – they are not scary athletically.

Stanton (QB) and Wolpin (RB) are as tough as they come but Mater Dei did a great job containing them. So if you playing along at home. SM lost to Mater Dei, Mater Dei lost to OLu and OLU lost to JSerra. Damien beat JSerra. Bosco played the top two tough and lost to Loyola. Amat was 12 yds from beating Loyola.

So none of that really means anything on Friday except…

    Anyone can beat anyone.

And everyone has to come and play like it might be your last one….because it just might be.

Here’s to hoping everyone, from all the playoff teams, lays it all on the field. While some may be disappointed in the results – make sure you play in a way you can be proud of your efforts

  • Fred Robledo

In my long and tired quest to find the identify of Joe Amat, finally a clue, “Every coach I heard at the CIF office says the same thing.” So Joe was at the CIF office on Sunday…. interesting :)….It doesn’t matter. Without the Joe’s, Dan’s, Aaron’s, C.O. Fan, Colt 74 and so many others, this blog wouldn’t be what it is without them all…

  • Cong ’76

In all honesty, without Cody or Harwell, LA does not win their repective championships…

  • AMAT 73

    12th man,
First off it is AMAT Family as one complete Family not many gathered together. Maybe attendence has been down but where I sit I see the same people all season long , every game . The Faithful or Family will make the trek regardless of who the QB is . I don’t know who you consider the average fan is , so it’s kind of tough to say that . Most AMAT fans are of the alums , parents , past parents , and long time followers . If you are of the average fan type you speak of ok I understand your point but there will be a strong showing for the Men in Blue , or White as we are the visiting team .

  • Fred Robledo

Attendance is down the same year Amat got rid of the enormous 50-50 pots that grew to 2,000 and 3,000 a game. Coincidence? Probably not, but I would bet Amat football is losing well over 10,000 for not having 50-50s. That was the greatest and easiest fundraiser in the SGV. When I asked why they stopped it, someone said a person threatened legal action because 50/50s are illegal. Hey, it hasn’t stopped the rest of the Valley, probably because nobody is asking anyone to fill out a tax claim for winning $150 at Covina District Field.

  • 12th man

    Joe Amat,
The 12 yards was against Notre Dame not Loyola~ …But I see your point..I completely agree with the fact that anyone of the top 8 teams can win it all..I also believe there will be atleast 2 upsets in the 1st round…This is pac5 football at its finest…I was there when Amat almost shocked Long Beach Poly..So yeah~ An upset is not “Impossible”..but remember that game was played with all the starters in key positions~

  • AMAT 73

    12th man,
Are you saying Rio at QB is only worth 7 points for us and 3 more for SM . If that’s the case I like our chances with Haynes if he gets the nod that much better. Our defense will not allow 35 nor 38 points .

  • Joe Amat

    12,

You are absolutely correct. That pass still flashes before my eyes in slo-mo! But, yes, you get my drift. Toe-to-toe with Loyola also.

Freddie, chalk another one up for MSGr. (as in NO MSG-r)

He overreacts to everything as it pertains to anything even close to a legal threat of any kind. While he has raised some money and built a gym (albiet, selfishly, to leave a “legacy” and removed the Alumni name so he could eventually get his name on the place) but he has done SO much to battle “the Family” atmosphere and only gives in when there is resistance that effects the bottom line. We will be in a much better place when he finally retires. Counting the days.

…and yes, gotta keep you guessing :-D

  • 12th man

    Amat 73,
I will give you another score on friday come game-time…much like the decision on who will start??…Who knows..come game-time I mite have Amat closing the gap or going ahead? Alot of things to factor 1)weather 2)injuries 3) game-plan…

  • CO Bro

Is this why all the schools are calling their “50-50″ drawings “opportunity drawings” or some other lame a$$ name? We have Bishop to blame for this? lol……j/k

  • Joe Amat

anybody who wants to get a look at Santa Margarita before Friday, take a look at this link to see them vs St John Bosco

  • Colt74

No matter what you call a 50/50, they are illegal in California.

    CAL. PEN. CODE 319

And NO..I don’t agree with the states logic.

  • Colt74

Also the state has been citing and handing out fines to schools for running them for years.

1997 Riverside D.A. went after schools hot and heavy.

    Don’t blame Bishop Amat.

  • Dog Town

First i want to say to aram, fred, Miguel, and steve, Great job! it’s a pleasure to read your comments and your imput on these blogs. also to the bloggers like Dan, Colt74, and Aaron. Dan thanks for being informative and honest, without being biased. A true WC fan.I cannot wait to see the live show tonite. It seems like after Soloman got hurt this year, WC was kind of forgotten. WC is one of the most talented and sound teams in the SGV. I cannot put a finger on it, granted the hacienda is not as strong as last year, but WC in many ways the same if not better than last years team. Jimmy frazier, has come in to his own, the DB are shutting people down. I have watched Maggiore over the years, Maggiore, and the coaching staff have system that clicks on a consistent basis. They believe in themselves and it produces on the the field, so Fred Aram, We are here, thanks for tonite. Dan, i would like to here some more input it is always informative and educating. Good luck to all our SGV teams!!

    Freddy,

When are the Winter Previews for soccer and basketball going to come out? I know football’s still king around here, but Winter sports start up here in a couple weeks!

  • Fred Robledo

I guess high schools are breaking the law every Friday night then….

  • Fred Robledo

Winter previews usually come out the last week of November, which I anticipate will the case again…Please, trying not to think about that yet:)

  • http://www.insidesocal.com/sgvfootball Aram Tolegian

I sure hope this means all of you will be watching the show tonight.

  • Fred Robledo

Look at all these threads, this is when the blogs are on fire, the week of the first round of the playoffs when everyone is still in play.

  • @Aram

What time will Solomon be on?

  • An Observation

I have seen Azusa once and La Puente once before I saw each of them in the LP/ Azusa meeting. Azusa against Ganesha 56-0 and La Puente against Duarte 49-7. Here is my observation about the Montview league to throw out there.
If Azusas preseason consist of losses to San Dimas, Maranatha, and Don Lugo and La Puentes preseason wins includes Northview, Wilson and Workman it tells me that the Montview is truly the weakest league in the Mid. I mean if Azusa is losing its preseason to some pretty good teams and La Puente is playing teams at best are mid to bottom feeders.
Id like to add also that the La Puente team that I saw at Citrus against Azusa was not the team that I saw play earlier. I will say Azusas staff was more polished while La Puentes staff are rough around the edges. These guys are blue collar guys with shorts and sweats while all the Azusa staff had their khaki pants and nice polo team shirts. Not that it matters but just and observation.
It was week ten and Azusa was having problems with not having the right personnel on the field players socializing on the sidelines kids taking their helmets off and slamming them to the ground it just didnt look good.
How will Azusa do in the playoffs? Lets just say they have on more week of football and then they can have a nice Thanksgiving meal with family because the Azusa boys are going nowhere.
Now with that said Azusa got blindsided in the draw hence the earlier comment and Id be surprised if La Puente doesnt beat Alhambra. I repeat the La Puente team that played Azusa was not the same team that I saw before. La Puente will make it to the second round and go home after that.

Nothing would suit me more than to see the bloggers that grace this site — EATING CROW putting the Crown of CO all season. Bishop Amat is hands down such the best team in the SGV. So, we are all agreed that the CoverItLive will be the Pomona-Monrovia game. Right?

I know that Pomona has been the red headed step child of these blogs these past few months but, I think they deserve the spotlight this week IMHO.
Just because grampa can get on your nerves at Thanksgiving dinner doesn’t mean that you make him eat dinner out in the garage.
Remember, it’s all about the kids. Not us bloggers.

I believe Amat and CO both have chances of an upset. Amat this week and C.O against Upland. Amat already has luck on there side, that could do wonders for a teams confidence. C.O has there offense running on al cylinders.if they can score quick like there last 2 games they can stun Upland.good luck on both teams.

This is the same stuff you wrote down last week and it’s obivious your a LA PUENTE FAN, with the same old song and dance! What did you cut& paste and bring it in here? LOL… Don’t you worry your little self about AZUSA, they will be fine. Usually AZUSA fans don’t come in here and talk a whole lot of SMACK, like you LP fans and been you doing it for quiet awhile now. I’ve on been here since we’ve been winning league championships and yes CIF games and call it, as I see it! I’m sure Coach Scherf and the AZTECS will be well prepared. Last year AZUSA went ten and 0 and won the Montview League title. LP, went 9-0, first time in school history and when the CHAMPIONSHIP game was on the line, LP lost! AZUSA came in and played a great game JUST HARD NOSE FOOTBALL that’s all.

Don’t come in here and state that LP, wasn’t the team you seen before? That’s because they were playing weaker teams which made LP look better then they actually were. AZUSA played a hard preseason and if you check it out, ALL THOSE TEAMS ARE IN THE PLAYOFFS! The only team you played in the preseason that is going to the playoffs is EL MONTE, which will play WHITTER CHRISTAN.OOOOOOHH Tuff draw.

Coach Scherf, plan it right by playing those teams in the preseason, because they know what to expect now. AZUSA has cerrittos, a team that is comparable to the teams AZUSA played in the preseason, so now come FRIDAY, the AZTECS by now should have iron out all the KINKS in their ARMOR. I’m trying to figure you out and you throw in their apparel??? WOW, who would care about that? oh you do. Then you talk about the players talking and socializing, i mean wouldn’t you be talking when the score is like 36-7,befor the half!

Here’s what’s coming next if AZUSA loses this Friday, and La Puente WINS! I can see it now, You see LA PUENTE was the better TEAM! LOL… Yeah and if you were, YOU WOULD NOW BE THE MONTVIEW LEAGUE CHAMPS!

GET’EM READY SCHERF AND AZUSA WILL BE READY! NOT THIS TIME!

  • The Real Housewives of Pelota Park

Thanks for plotting out the playoffs for us guys. Now we can stay home and play Madden rather than venture out to unknown areas and view games where the outcome has already been determined. The $24 saved by not having to attend these games, along with additional savings on gas, nachos, 50/50 tickets, etc. will go into the Thanksgiving budget and upgrade the family’s celebration. I, for one applaud this public service by the trib pundits and am thankful going forward for the insight provided by Aram, Steve, Fred (aka ‘lil puppet) Robledo, and the grooroo. It is comforting to know that the hundreds of hours spent watching all of these teams play this past season by your professionals has been properly put to use here and your collective expertise properly utilized in selecting the victors.

  • 12th man

    Miguel,
There is no way D-Ranch wins it all~…I went to the game last week when WC just over-powered & out-played D-Ranch in every aspect of the game…I just dont see anything different in a rematch..D-Ranch could not run the ball..WC swarms & takes away the sidelines forcing you to run to their strengths(up the middle) & as far as passing goes..WC DB’s have too much speed & can jump routes at any given time..I just dont see the DR QB having time to throw or thread the needle…28-7 West Covina in a rematch~

  • BULLDOG TIA

what a great group of guys! loved your interview! good luck WCHS BULLDOGS, this coming friday, on your game against norwalk.

  • The Doc

Let dissect this Aztec Pride Athletic supporter shall we using his own words.
    1. Usually AZUSA fans don’t come in here and talk a whole lot of SMACK,
    Really? Then what is this?
You see LA PUENTE was the better TEAM! LOL… Yeah and if you were, YOU WOULD NOW BE THE MONTVIEW LEAGUE CHAMPS!
Oh how proud to be a Longview league champ!
    2. Don’t come in here and state that LP, wasn’t the team you seen before? That’s because they were playing weaker teams which made LP look better then they actually were. AZUSA played a hard preseason and if you check it out
Hey idiot you played the same teams in the MONTVIEW you dope. So what your saying Azusa was playing the same WEAKER TEAMS too RIGHT? ..RIGHT???? .
    3. the AZTECS by now should have iron out all the KINKS in their ARMOR.
Look at this quote the key words SHOULD HAVE all the kinks worked out. SHOULD HAVE ? Its week eleven for goodness sakes. Wed hope so.
    4. I’m trying to figure you out and you throw in their apparel??? WOW, who would care about that? oh you do.
I think the guy stated it wasnt relevant.
5.Then you talk about the players talking and socializing, i mean wouldn’t you be talking when the score is like 36-7,befor the half!
As a matter of fact no. If the game is being played on the field and you have teammates busting their ass on the field for you why should you be over screwing around with the trainers, cheerleaders with your helmet off should you bee over there supporting your teammates? Or is all about your frecking social calendar because its all about you.
    6. Here’s what’s coming next if AZUSA loses this Friday, and La Puente WINS! I can see it now, You see LA PUENTE was the better TEAM! LOL
Well duh theyll have the better record youll have four losses. La Puente will have two. Doesnt take a genius to figure that out.
    7. YOU WOULD NOW BE THE MONTVIEW LEAGUE CHAMPS!
Well yeah but Id be whispering that.
8.GET’EM READY SCHERF AND AZUSA WILL BE READY! NOT THIS TIME!
I cant figure this one out. Are you saying that Coach will be ready or NOT THIS TIME confusing to say the least. Which is it Ready or Ready or NOT?
    9. PASS ME THE GRAVY!
Refer to #9 I guess Azusa will not be ready because PASS ME THE GRAVY means on Thanksgiving instead of practicing youll be PASSING THE GRAVY. But after all your MONTVIEW LEAGUE CHAMPIONS!!!! Whoooooppppiiieeeeeeeeeee!!!!!!!

  • Not So Fast My Friend

Love how you guys did the brackets. Now I see why Upland is beating their chest! First picking Upland over Vista Murrieta. That’s a long shot. I’ve seen VM play, pre/post forfeits and I’ve seen Upland play. That’ll be a good game, but I don’t see Upland beating them.

Upland vs. Centennial (CC) and Upland winning is even more bizarre. Upland is not as fast as Centennial, nor do I see Upland’s LB’s being able to stuff the CC’s run game. Notice I said “LB’s”. Upland’s DT’s had problems being consistent stuffing Los Osos run plays and Osos hasn’t been anything to lose sleep over. In fact, if VM hadn’t had to forfeit games and Etiwanda’s HC didn’t have a brain freeze and call a bonehead play, Osos would be at home.

In the end, until CC decides to declare itself a university, or Coach Logan and staff leave, or they suffer a massive talent drain, I don’t see anyone from Baseline getting past them. Upland is close, but they are not there yet.

  • AZTEC PRIDE(SUPPORTER)

  • Bulldogs have bite

Great show last night guys! I am really impressed with how the WestCo boys represented themselves last night. They are a confident yet humble group that would rather shine the spotlight on their teamates than take all the credit for themselves. It makes it really easy to pull for these kids every Friday night after watching how genuine and good natured they are off the field! On the field, well that’s when the beast comes out!

As for Amat’s attendance, the L.A. Archdiocese recently acknowledged that attendance at their schools is down a whopping 20%. I don’t recall what period of time this covered, suffice it to say it’s a significant drop.

As good as Amat is both in the classroom and on the field, there is no way they have not been affected. You can only work with what you have.

I haven’t seen the numbers for the O.C. Archdiocese, but in my opinion they have not had such a steep drop.

  • Lance R

In regards to the 50/50 and Amat: This was a jackpot far and beyond what other schools were doing with the total amount 1/2 going to the winner and 1/2 to the school. I mean it was a bonanza but you cannot tell me that the Bingo games at Amat or other schools cannot be considered illegal as well. I mean come on they have scratch off tickets, money is being exchanged and you cannot tell me Amat is built on a Indian Reservation. It is big business and it has to be some form of illegal gambling that has been grandfathered in by the archdiocese. The word is how do you claim to have collected lets say $3000 from the crowd at a Amat game and the winning ticket receives $1500. From what I understand what if they really collected $4000 and they are reporting only $3000, who would know did they actually count all those ones??? also from what I heard people selling the tickets were skimming off the top and real easy to do. I believe that’s why it all got put to a halt as the trust issue became a issue. The school could collect and claim a lower number of cash. Real easy to do. Another Monsignor moneymaker, only this time this one was taken away. I guess it is ripple now for the Monsignor instead of a 85 Chateau le Fleet.

  • fb102

    Lance R.,

You are SO way off here.

What Joe Amat wrote is close to truth.

The money was counted as collected[CHALLENGING, INDEED, BUT counted EVERYTIME] and the winner DID receive exactly 1/2 of the pot.

What you ‘heard’ is CONJECTURE AND BULLS***.

You OWE an apology to the volunteers who ran/worked this fundraiser for even suggesting it was rigged in ANY manner.
