Bishop Amat practices with slight hope of making playoffs, and disappointed league officials couldn't agree to take potential coin-flip decider beforehand

Consider the plight of the Bishop Amat High School football team.
The Lancers' regular-season schedule is over. The team is on a bye week and its playoff fate is up in the air. And if you go out to Amat any afternoon this week, the Lancers are in pads practicing for a future they don't know for sure exists. Amat's postseason hopes rest on the performances of others and the luck of a coin flip, assuming those performances turn out in Amat's favor.

In a nutshell Amat, which finished the regular season 6-4, needs Serra League foes Crespi and Notre Dame to lose this week. If that happens, those teams and Amat would be 1-3 in league and need a coin flip to determine the order of finish for the league's bottom-three teams. The third-place team would earn a berth in the CIF-Southern Section PAC-5 playoffs.

Of course, all of this could be avoided if Notre Dame, which is the league's secretary school, simply would conduct the coin flip ahead of this week's games, thus allowing the Lancers to know whether there's even a point in practicing.

But despite Amat's attempts to get Notre Dame to do just that, Notre Dame officials won't budge. The coin flip, if needed, will be done after Friday's games. Most leagues do it ahead of time to avoid situations like the one Amat is in.

"We're disappointed that it couldn't be done ahead of time," Amat coach Steve Hagerty said. "I think it's only fair to our kids, but we accept the league's ruling to do it after the games."

Hagerty and Amat tried to urge Notre Dame to do the coin flip this week before the games in order to spare players the experience of putting in practice time while risking injury for a game that might not happen. Knowing the results of the coin flip now also would save Amat's coaching staff scouting trips to potential first-round opponents and parents from having to arrange transportation plans for practice. Again, Notre Dame wouldn't budge.

"They refused our request for the support of the kids and their families, and for the families of the coaches who are going to spend another night scouting," Hagerty said. "And for all of the families who have to make arrangements for picking up and dropping off the kids for practice."

In the meantime, Amat practices as if it was a normal week. The Lancers concluded their regular season last Friday with a close loss to Notre Dame. That outcome, coupled with Amat's loss to Loyola a week prior, put the Lancers in a precarious position.

Getting teenagers focused on practicing for a game that may not be played is a tricky proposition for Hagerty and his coaches. But as Hagerty explained it, he had no other choice.

"It would be irresponsible of me if I didn't prepare the kids to play, even if there's a small chance that we will," Hagerty said. "All the things we go through in a season have a purpose involved. Usually, the purpose is far greater than winning games."

Amat has dealt with its share of adversity. It started with the absence of quarterback Rio Ruiz, who was expected to miss a significant chunk of Amat's nonleague schedule while playing in a baseball tournament. When the tournament was delayed, Ruiz stayed with the team for good.

Then, top offensive lineman Andrew Hauser abruptly left the team in the middle of the season to transfer to Charter Oak. That was followed by Ruiz injuring his knee early in the game against Loyola and top defensive player Randall Varela lost for the past two games because of disciplinary action.

Friday won't be an easy day for Hagerty. He will travel to Ventura for the funeral of a close friend. Then, he and his wife will stick around the San Fernando Valley area on what happens to be their 25th wedding anniversary weekend to wait and see what happens in the Alemany-Notre Dame and Crespi-Loyola games. If Notre Dame and Crespi lose, which they're expected by many to do, Hagerty will be on hand at Notre Dame to witness the coin flip. Of course, that won't take place until after a Crespi representative can make it to Notre Dame from their game at

L.A. Valley College.

The following morning at 9 a.m. is the all-league meeting, also at Notre Dame.

"She married a coach," Hagerty said of his wife. "Six kids and 25 years later, she is definitely used to all that."

Made some observations on what next years team needs to improve, were right on. The only problem that I have is with the QB situation. Granted Jerry Mac was a good QB. He managed the offense, made some big throws when needed. Wasn't the greatest athlete, but was a solid QB. The part where he says 2 stud QB's is where I have an issue. I would like anyone to share a stud moment from Rio Ruiz in his two years as a starter. The reason Jerry Mac was considered to be a stud is he won some big games. His numbers weren’t off the charts, didn't have the big arm, wasn't fast, but he managed the offense and made plays when he was suppose to. There isn't any evidence that "nine" has done anything to warrants stud status. Win big game, off the chart numbers, something. Great kid, stud baseball player, yes. Far as the sophomore Koa Haynes, I believe he was sacked 5 times, and he threw the pick at the end. What sophomore QB playing in his first wouldn’t have jitters. I too was at the game and the youngster looked poised and ready. I believe he completed his first 11 passes. Not all screens to WR or RB. The first play of the game was a pass completed for 20 yards, the second pass play for 18 yards, and all balls thrown down the field. I believe Maxpreps has him throwing for 19 of 24 for 222 yards. One ball tipped, one batted down, one thrown into the ground intentionally, an incomplete to #11 in the back of the end zone, and the pick. Those are the only passes he missed all night. If that’s jitters and not ready for the moment, I would like to see this kid with few starts under his belt. By the way this is the Pac 5, week 10 with the season on the line, one week of snaps with first O, sounds like a solid one to me! Oh, you failed to mention the lack of protection for the young QB. Just my observation of course.

shouldn't this article include a response from Notre Dame? It does not mention why they are so inflexible about having the coin flip after the games, rather than before. Maybe it's clear to th writer, but not so clear to the rest of us.

Although it sucks for Amat, I don't blame ND and Crespi for wanting to flip after the games. You want to control your destiny with a win not a coin flip.
Amat had their chances to win this year they could of easily been 3 and 1, instead they are 1 and 3.

If Hag would have run the ball aganist Notre Dame; on the 12 yard line with some two minutes left, He would not have to wonder about the coin flip.

Sondheimer got it right.

The flip should ALWAYS take place after the last game.

blah blah blah. So glad we don't have to hear this anymore...

Laughs on you because you just love to read it. You read the whole story cover to cover concerning the coin flip and Amat practicing just in case there is a game. You admire from afar, I know, but you hate close up. Which one is it. By the way you never did mention what HS you follow. Typical hater but loves to read about us. Your a closet follower just admit it.

I am so glad we don't have to hear this crap anymore this year. Looks like the Lancers weren't so mighty this year were they? Yes, they will be back next year for another ho-hum season.....not in 2012 either!

Thought I'd chime in the areas of improvement I'd like to see next year at Amat.

1) Offensive line. The line was the weakest link on the team. They played great against lower division teams but weren't nearly as effective against the bigger PAC 5 schools. They got trampled by Servite which is understandable but they struggled for the most part during league. Alemany and Loyola pushed them around. Notre Dame got 5 sacks although the ball should have been thrown out of bounds sooner in 3 of those plays. Let's face it, they need to get bigger and stronger. The opponent's size was getting to them and you can even hear Jalen Moore yelling at his linemen to "wake the f**k up!" during the ND game. There are 4 juniors in that position who are 6 feet and 200 pounds. If they can put up 20 pounds in the weight room, the line should be good. They have the heart, they just need the size. Amat's always been known for stellar running backs due in large part to their great offensive line. I remember there were about six or seven kids who ended up playing OL in division 1 during the DiFiori years. If Amat's going to continue this ground and pound philosophy, they need the personnel to do it.

2) Quarterback. Amat's been spoiled with two stud qb's the past four years. (IMO, McClanahan was the better qb. Ruiz is the better athlete and has the bigger arm but McClanahan was the better passer and read plays better.) Whoever's going to be under center next year shouldn't be afraid of the moment. What I saw from Koa Haynes is that he still has the jitters to work through although he did seem to be finding a stride in the second half of the ND game. I fault the coaching staff for the last interception. I don't think he was ready to handle the team's most important drive of the season. Amat doesn't need a great quarterback next year, just a solid one.

3)punting and punt returns. Amat needs to do a better job giving their defense a more favorable field position. Many times, the opponent's offense would start on the 35 yard line or closer inside Amat territory. Securing the ball on punt returns is most important. You can't return a punt or have your offense get on the field without the ball.

Look at the bright side..Calpreps isnt always rite~..The Computer generated analysis predicted that Amat would lose all 4 league games & they only lost 3!! lol..On a more serious note..I would have thought that the Coaches from ND or Loyola would have wanted the flip early.. This way if they lose the coin flip it would give them an incentive to win this weeks game knowing that their team is in a must win situation~..Although on the flipside maybe you dont want to put that kind of pressure on your team...& its also possible that they may give up during the game if they fall behind a couple of scores thinking (well..we already lost the coin flip so this game doesn't really matter)

I can't comment on certain things but the one thing I can say is that both Notre Dame and Crespi didn't want to do the coin flip for ethical and integrity issues.

I agree that Sondheimer has already determined who's going to win Friday - but the games do need to be played. Hey if Hagerty doesn't like the way it's being handled, he can always bring it up at the all-league meeting on Saturday.

For now, he's out of luck.

Cal Preps predicts:

Loyola 31
Crespi 21

Notre Dame 26
Alemany 24

In this case Notre Dame is in as Team #3 of the Serra.

Unless Cal Preps knows something inside I just do not see ND beating Alemany.

Coin flip Possible

I really believe we may be done for the season but stranger things have happened. Hope is there but slim as it is I still believe we beat ourselves and only have ourselves to be held accountable for not taking care of business when on the field. Unless the coin flip should fall our way, Playoffs or No playoffs the team fought hard this year and gave it all they had. I give them their due credit for becoming and being part of The Lancers this year, all players. To the Seniors, tough to not get in a playoff round but to be a Lancer and grow up throughout the Lancer program especially 4-year players you make existing, former and future Lancers proud of you. Parents of Seniors hold your head high they fought hard for the School. Mighty Are The Men That Wear The Blue And Gold. Were Bishop Amat we will be back!

Aram or FredJ,

You guys should comment on that Sondheimer piece. Put him and that liberal media called the LA Times in place!

SGV Scouting,

How can you call that LA Times story accurate?

Fred is right. Read what he said.

If you want to make a big deal out of my story because I said Amat was in pads, then fine. But the rest of it is totally accurate and if anything the Times story is not.

Your head is so blurred now that it leads you to post stupid crap like this.

FredJ said:

Thanks Guru, except the part he writes that the teams that lose the coin flip are out of the playoff hunt is inaccurate. If they Crespi wins, they're in. If Notre Dame wins and Crespi loses, Notre Dame is in. If they both win, Crespi advances anyway....So what's the big deal about an advance flip, especially for Crespi, they control their own destiny by winning...

Let's have Eric Sondheimer of the Los Angeles Times have the final AND CORRECT story on what happened and what didn't happen...

Football: Bishop Amat wanted coin flip before Friday
November 9, 2011 | 8:17 am

La Puente Bishop Amat is in limbo this week. The Lancers have a bye and won't know if they will get a chance to participate in a coin flip to decide third place in the Serra League until after Friday's results involving other teams.

Coach Steve Hagerty wanted to hold coin flips with Encino Crespi and Sherman Oaks Notre Dame well before Friday to determine if the Lancers should even practice this week.

But the league coordinator, Stephanie Contreras of Flintridge Sacred Heart, said she asked Notre Dame and Crespi if they wanted to do the coin flips before Friday's games. They rejected the idea. Contreras said the league has always waited to do coin flips following the last games.

And that's a good idea. Imagine if word leaked that a team had lost the coin flip and was out of the playoff hunt.

So if Notre Dame and Crespi both lose on Friday, they will tie with Bishop Amat, requiring coin flips to decide third place. And that will occur Friday night. So get your lucky charms ready.

Amat Bully said:

WHO CARES........dang you know there is other teams in the SGV that actually made the playoffs and you have yet to write anything about those teams or chances. yes i know its still another week but your focusing on a team that has almost zero chance of making it talk about Covina or Azusa or pomona havent heard you speak about them in a while....

Pipe Dreams said:

Bottom line.. Quit focusing on Amat Freddie. They didn't get i done on the field. If anybody thinks this Amat would represent in the playoffs is just plain wishful thinking. They suck!

FredJ said:

Aram wrote they were in pads, but Amat did not tell him that. Aram was unaware of the rule that teams on bye week's can't practice in pads...As far as I know, Amat knows this rule.

FredJ said:

Amat's only chance of making the playoffs is if Loyola beats Crespi, Alemany beats Notre Dame, then Amat wins a three-way coin flip on Friday night betweeen Notre Dame, Crespi and Amat....A Hail Mary's chance.

Paul said:

Solution, take care of business on the field, and no coin flip is neccessary!

Riddle me This?? said:

According to CIF blue book Section 1918 1 d, all bye week practices are supposed to be conducted without pads. Fred you said they are in pads. I happen to like Amat, but it would seem that they are in violation of the Blue Book. Hmmmmm, either Hagerty doesn't know the rules, or he doesn't care about the rules. I wonder.

IF Bishop Amat would lose the coin flip they are out. They need Crespi AND Note Dame to lose AND to win the coin flip to keep going. If they did the coin flip now and lost they could turn in their gear. They would know that no matter WHAT the outcome of Crespi/Notre Dame games were they could not continue in the playoffs due to losing the coin toss.

IMHO No class by Notre Dame. Remember that Lancers when and if they ever need a favor. Payback may not be Godly, but it still is sweet.

Am I missing something missing said:

If Amat loses the flip they still have to practice and scout because they are still not mathamtically out. Correct?
So why the big deal about the early flip.
