Ayala-Damien, If you know so much why don't you play the game the other dad's are playing. You seemed to have it all figured out and still can't get it done for your boy. Don't act like your above the games either because your clearly playing one on this blog. You know the truth there is no game being played or promises being made so go break it to your boy he is not good enough.

Completely agree with you "are you kidding"! Gano will help get his nephews in college. He lacks the responsibility of preparing the kids for the next level.
For those "dads" who are saying Gano is doing a fine job: these must be the same dads who took their kids out of other schools in their areas because they weren't going to get a starting job.(Glendora, South Hills, Paraclete,...)
These kids aren't any better than the ones off the bench. These are the "dads" that have the handshakes with Gano behind closed doors. Then Gano makes sure his coaches follow his command. How do I know this, because Gano's coaches know this. If they had an equal playing field, I could guarantee, the other coaches would have selected different kids to start.
A kid can drop ten catches in the season, then go on defense and miss tackles. Any other coach would have replaced him already.
But Gano needs to keep his promise to those "dads".

Damien is going to improve no doubt. I feel good about next year. but the truth is, Gano hasn't done anything worthwhile except hire the Bishop Amat coaches for the freshman team.

I don't see what the big deal is. It's not like Amat was getting blown out of the water. This is the Serra League. Try to imagine a league with 4 Charter Oaks or 4 West Covinas and THAT's what the Serra is.

The most important thing to remember is that Amat has lost to THREE Serra teams by only a combined 21 points including two 5 point losses, one of which was without QB Rio Ruiz.

FYI, the Serra is currently ranked #2 in California via Calpreps boasting a 48.6 rating (almost twice that of the Sierra League).

First off just wanted to chime in on the Lancer fans that are calling for change in the Coaching department. The team fought hard and came up empty on those two last drives that could have sealed a victory and playoff appearance, but to blame coach Hagerty and call for his dismissal is plain and flat out crazy. I know how you feel as some of you are parents of Seniors on the team and this was their last season as Lancers on the football field. All coach Hagerty has done is bring Amat back to being a winner. I mean we have not won a championship in some time but our team under Hagerty has always been competitive in a tough Serra league. Your kids if seniors played their Junior year under Hagerty and you got to play in a playoff game and you were not complaining then. Take those two years of Mark Verti and tell me how you think those parents felt when the kids that played their junior and senior year for Verti were embarrassed not because of no talent but because of a inexperienced coaching staff I am almost postive Hagerty would have won with those Lancer teams. Now they had a right to call for Marks ouster and throw a fit, as much as Mark was a very fine young man he was not ready to coach at the Level that is accepted at Bishop Amat, in comes Hagerty and instantly Amat goes on a upswing the crowd loves the Poly game in the playoffs. The fans love the Mater Dei win and a close game that also could have been won vs Lakewood a team with three or four soon to be D1 college players. Amat was in that game but lost. I walked to my car after that Lakewood game and said to myself damn this guy can coach football. This coach and coaching staff have put together season after season of great football coaching your kids against some top quality opponents and players. Hagerty seem to always have a chance at winning any time one of his teams takes the field. It is tough to lose and not see the playoff round after being used to winning but dont bash coach Hagerty. If Rio is in that game this team gets the win without a problem and some of you would not be talking like this, not a knock on Koa but Rio makes a big difference. You win as a team and you lose as a team. Sorry your senior may not get a chance to sniff the playoff round. It happens and as your hanging onto that thread of hope that a coin flip could come our way that's ok and if we are on the outside looking in that's life, congrats to this years team they put it on the line no regrets.

Thought the game was great. Santiago and CO played a hell of a game. Damien did better than I imagined, suprising me by scoring as many touch downs as they did.

Coaching staff at CO had in their reserve players in the second and third quarters
(except Santiago and Scooby of course) but the defensive and offensive reserves were able to play. I was happy to see my son get some playing time.

Give Damien some credit, they played their best.

Selection of At-Large berths is really not as subjective as who has what some might think are "good wins" and whether it was "convincing" or not. It is actually a very objective process that you could go out and figure to eliminate the guess-work.
Here is the criteria in its selection process, with each category below having the specific weight listed:

(a) Head-to-head competition of teams under consideration (4 points)
(b) Overall strength of the league from which the team is entered (1 point)
(c) Overall win-loss record (1 point)
(d) Strength against common opponents (1 point)
(e) Strength of schedule (2 points, using overall win-loss record of opponents)
(f) Free lance teams will be part of the pool for the filling of at-large berths

CO did a great job giving Gano another lose. The rumors of CO listening to Gano call the plays up in the booth is another excuse for the lose.
It's like a said before, all teams figure out Gano's game calls after a while. He is predictable.
Gano said at the beginning of the season that "this is the best team I've had in the three years I've been here". Another hogwash story. He is 6-3 with one game left. If he wins, Big IF, he will be 7-3. One more game than last year's 6-4 team. And two more than the 5-5 team his first year. But I believe he would still be at 6-4 if he kept St. John Bosco in the line up. But he knew he could not beat them. He looks for an easier team to have a chance to win.
The blogs also discusses the great job he has done. I'd like to know how many kids in these three years, including this year, has he prepared, supported, and sat with, for colleges. As far as I know, none. No one on his coaching staff does anything in preparation for these kids to talk to college coaches. As a matter of fact, big fact. Gano doesn't even share information with the kids who might receive letters from colleges.
The kids are pretty much on their own to get colleges to look at them. I'd be very surprised if Gano supported any of these kids. This is not a program. This is about who's dad will kiss Gano's butt so their kids could play.
Gano is very predictable.

The Hacienda could get 5 play-off births. The Southeast is not like the Mid-Valley, there is only one At-Large birth. The Hacienda get 4 automatic bids, the Suburban get 4, the Pacific get 4 and the Del Rio get 3.

If Los Altos loses to Diamond Bar, they can still claim the At-Large, with a 6-4 record.

More than likely, the next two best records in the Division, will be Crescenta Valley and El Rancho, also with 6-4 records. The difference, is El Rancho does not have any "noteable" victories, and they lost to LA. CV's biggest win is Muir. LA beat Diamond Ranch and Bellflower, both convincingly, and Bellflower is in a 3-way tie for Suburban League Champs with Mayfair and La Mirada.

So, if CIF does there homework, LA will get the At-Large. Or, they can beat Diamond Bar and receive the 4th place play-off birth automatically.

Big Lou was probably worried about style points and Aram's comparitive scores theory between Amat/Damien/CO. Aram SO wanted it to be really lopsided so he could prove a point. Unfortunately Pucci's 288 yds passing and Castille's 100+ rushing proved an even bigger point. Amat would slow CO's offense (they'ved slowed much better this year already) and would run wild through that sieve they call a defense.

the best Los Altos can do (with a win against DB and a Bonita loss to Rowland) is still a 4th place finish, is it possible for the Hac League to get 2 of the 4 wildcards???

Any one know how Scooby is doing? I hated to see him injured at such a meaningless point in the game. My buddies and I were wondering why coach still had all the starters in when he was up by 4 Td's late in the game. Is Scooby going to be ready to go this week?

I have a player on the Damien JV team. It’s great to go out and watch him and his teammates compete. Overall the team and coaches are doing a great job. On the other hand some of the parents have a lot to learn about respect from these boys. There is one parent in particular who does nothing but LOUDLY complain about both players and coaches. We don’t come to games to here you bad mouth our kid so keep our opinion to yourself. If you can’t learn a little respect from these boys try humility because your kid is not better than any of the rest. If you can’t find it within yourself to be humble do the right thing and transfer we don’t need or want you. The same can be said for a few of the varsity parent I have seen embarrassing themselves on Fridays. Please take this a positive friendly advice. God Bless.

i was at the pomona game last friday and i must say i was very impressed with nelson at running back. this kid is by no means a running back and what he did to the pomona defense was incredible. my views are changing on nelson now after seeing the game last friday and i hope this kid and george play at the next level. just too bad wilson doesnt have a passing QB because if they did they would have won at least 4 games. i feel for you burt

Frosh parents,

CO has three soph Dlineman 47, 56, 45, LB 34 and two DB's 4 & 16. Starting center 54 is a soph and oh yeah 16 & 4 are our soph running backs. Don't forget the starting juniors 5,6,17,21,22,24,28,55 and don't forget Hauser from AMAT who will play on both sides of the ball next year..... life sucks.

Freshman football doesn't have a thing to do with varsity especially the following year.
South Hills and Bonita both can testify to that. For years the overzealous freshman parents come on this blog claiming to be the saviors. It doesn't work that way. Show me a team that has more than 2 or 3 max starting sophomores and I will show a team that gets beat week in and week out. It's about your program from top to bottom and if you don't have one you will never win. As I side note Damien is clearly building a program. Keep up the good work all the hate means people are taking notice.

If we're up by a ton of pts, don't just have Sunshine get game reps but get the other younger guys out there so they not only have experience for when they may be called on in the playoffs, but for next year as well.

Wasn't Damien one big pass play away from being 7-1? And wasn't CH in 3rd and 33? Wasn't Damien tied with Amat at half time and should have been up by 14 without a drop pass and a muffed long snap? Didn't Damien beat up on J Serra, who just had a big win, until things went loopy? Didn't Damien avenge a Temescal Canyon beat down from a few years back? Hasn't Gano beaten Layton twice in a row? Didn't Gano beat Claremont, and this year, in exciting fashion last year and miss the playoffs by the skin of their teeth? Didn't Gano call a great game down the stretch to secure the South Hills win? Haven't the Damien teams benefitted from the Gano pushed new weight room? Hasn't Gano hired outstanding freshmen coaches with over 80 years of D1 football experience instead of the Dads and misfits from a few years ago? Hasn't Gano improved the overall culture of inclusion that was missing previously? Hasn't Gano helped players get to next level teams?Isn't Coach Estrada one of the finest men to ever walk Damien soil? And haven't the new players been great team mates and outstanding quality individuals? Please put Alex Hernandez and Jalen Castille at the top of those list, talk about outstanding quality kids and parents! Not sure what people want any more...hell Morrison lost to Bassett last year and this year lost to Duarte while Azusa, Los Altos and La Punte have turned things around with their new coaching staffs...what does that tell you!
Every season since Gano has been there I've seen nothing but things I admire and respect from his staff...across the board. Matter of fact the first time Gano played Amat was a full on battle not seen since Pasquerella beat them in 2002!
Baseball had a watershed restructuring when others said it was unfair to replace the previous coach...now look at the results! Football is no different.
Seen the freshmen team play and I'll say this...next year Damien wins league outright...tons of leadership,size, speed and flat out ballers who love to work....so watch out.
BTW on a side note...seen the CH freshmen QB.....OUTSTANDING!!! That kid had the potential to be great, not good GREAT...in my opinion.

Aaron and Statman: Not sure where you two are going with this critique of the Bohi QB situation. What do you want exactly. Your motives seem somewhat unclear to me.If you have seen the games there is clearly no other choice but the senior. Bonita is thriving with him at qb. Sure he throws some poor passes so did Pendleton last year. If your motives are to give the sophs more playing time just say so, you are deserving of your opinions. But right now the stat I'm looking at are wins and losses and bad stats and all Burgett is getting wins. If the sophs throw 30 passes a game Bonita's no huddle would slow to a standstill. If it ain't broke don't fix it.

lets talk recruiting...I always here about Amat recruiting players.I know some great local athletes last year that where being recruited by either Damien or Cathedral for both footbal and baseball. out of these great athletes that I know ,none of them where ever scouted by Amat . some of these kids would of made Amat there first choice,but since they had no offers they either went to cathedral and Damien. Amat missed on some great athletes.Damiens freshmen team is an example,they where very good. How do schools recruit linemen,most big kids are to big and heavy to play pop warner because of the age and weight cut offs.my nephew never played pop warner because he was always to heavy.this year he finally got to play freshmen football but the lack of experience kept him on the bench.by the end of the year he got his starting position at guard and is being looked at by varsity coach for next year.how can a kid be scouted in the 8th grade without being able to play.he could be the biggest kid out there and not move very well.so there is no way of knowing that without seeing him play.

#7 for Pomona was 10 - 14 257 yards and 2 TD's against Wilson; the first pass was an INC, he then threw 9 straight completions, then had 3 consecutive INC's, then finished with a reception, and had no INT's though there was one dropped right in the breadbasket in the 4th quarter, overall had a quick release, however #7 and the center better practice some more this week, there were several miscues on the snap

"Pomona" must be Schreiman that is why he isn't giving any details of the game. I'm not Schreiman and I don't care.

First off Mr. Nelson wants to come on this blog and put his son on blast, fine. Darias (Pomona) and Nelson (Wilson) both rush for about 200 yards; Nelson had another 100 yards on special teams. The difference in the game was at the qb position.

Schreiman (Pomona) threw for at least 300 yards over 75%, 2 TD passes and 1 TD running. Morales (Wilson) was his usually terrible; I think he was 1 for 10 in the first half ended up with around 60 yards, 1 INT. and no TD's.

Here are the stats of the two before this game;

Schreiman has 13 TD's passing with 10 int. and 7 rushing touchdowns (20 TD's)

Morales has 4 Td's passing with 10 int. and 0 rushing touchdowns (4 TD's)

Schreiman sent a very clear message to Wilson Administration last night. They wanted the teacher’s son to lead their team; well they got him alone with that 0-9 record.

Aaron, some valid comments on the Bonita QBs. Just be careful about drawing too many conclusions from stats on Maxpreps. It shows Burgett with 2 interceptions against Walnut, when in fact he only had 1, and it does not show his TD pass last night against Diamond Bar.

i have lost all respect for hags. he has built a program on fear and used a method of putting the kids down. he intimidates the kids and i have personally heard from players that "he makes football not fun". this is from starters that i will not name. i have been an amat fan since the 90's and i must tell you i had much respect for this man in the beginning but he has lost his touch and hasnt adapted to the new styles of coaching these days. his playcalling is simply stupid. he loses his "cool" during the games, and cannot handle a team with such talent. so many players played their last game due to his efforts. many cannot gain weight and put on size because of him. most schools have a strength coach, while amat has hags. obviously the man does not know a thing about getting bigger because every school they play outsizes them. i dont respect hags anymore and i would love for the program to get a fresh start. it is easy to see that many of the other coaches do not like what hags has created either. lets get a change ad at amat. please. the parents, students, players, fans and alum would appreciate it. don't believe me? ask anyone who took a trip to kiefer stadium this year. one word. dead.

For us to even be in this game and have an opportunity to win at the end was ABSOLUTELY AMAZING. Think about it, we were playing without our Starting QB, our Starting MLB, and one of our Best Lineman. Not to mention other injured players, etc.

This Coaching Staff has done a PHENOMENAL JOB allowing our boys to compete in every game at the highest level even though we didn't match up with the teams we are playing.

We were in every game despite the fact that we probably have no more than 4 starters total on Offensive and Defense over 6'0" and 200lbs.

Let's be real...our boys are athletic and have heart, but we didn't have much size.

But even with those limitations, Hags and Staff have made GREAT things happen.

With ANY other staff in the valley, we would have been 1-9 or 2-8.

All of us should be out there on Monday afternoon thanking these coaches for the time they have devoted to helping our undersized team compete and win at the highest levels.

Don't let the emotions of 1 tough loss change your perception of reality.

For us to even be in this game and have an opportunity to win at the end was ABSOLUTELY AMAZING. Think about it, we were playing without our Starting QB, our Starting MLB, and one of our Best Lineman. Not to mention other injured players, etc.

This Coaching Staff has done a PHENOMENAL JOB allowing our boys to compete in every game at the highest level even though we didn't match up with the teams we are playing.

We were in every game despite the fact that we probably have no more than 4 starters total on Offensive and Defense over 6'0" and 200lbs.

Let's be real...our boys are athletic and have heart, but we didn't have much size.

But even with those limitations, Hags and Staff have made GREAT things happen.

With ANY other staff in the valley, we would have been 1-9 or 2-8.

All of us should be out there on Monday afternoon thanking these coaches for the time they have devoted to helping our undersized team compete and win at the highest levels.

Don't let the emotions of 1 tough loss change your perception of reality.

First off in regards to Burgett...he's a great kid and works his butt off. I think if he's asked to throw 20 times a game we will not be successful. That you can put on the play calling. He's done a good job managing the game, but he's been asked to play beyond himself which is where we get the four INTs in two games and 6 in four games.

Whether some people like it or not Hags needs to leave. He has been out coached almost every game, and has completely lost his composure, and it has worsened every year, and very evident this year. What might have worked before is not working today; he needs to change with the flow of the game, but is stuck on old school. He has lost several games for Amat this year, with his play calling, the fans, players, and his coaches know it. His coaches won’t say anything in fear he will snap and fire them like he did the freshman staff. Time to go Hags; you’ve done nothing for us in 4 years. The spark has been lost within the fans, players, and alumni; you could feel in the air every game.

Our game with Wilson was like your game with Northview last year. The strange part of it was we put up good stats on offense three fumbles and only one punt all night probably the reason for the low score. We had over 500 yards of offense, on defense Nelson got us for around 200 yards and another 100 on special team. Can't go into to much detail don't want to start any blog wars. I will say it was never a game and was never a blowout (28-7 halftime).

For some reason fox sports was their, not sure why. They interview a couple of our guys and Nelson.

Tough loss for Amat, just seems to be the way this season has been. Amats defense did another great job, and pretty much shut down ND offense. Amat missed two opportunities to score in first half with penalties and then the Qb being sacked. Twice Amat was in the red zone in the first half and didnt score. Second half defense set up great opportunities for Amats offense and they could not get it done.
also I really hate to critize coaching staff, becuase its easier to call plays from the stands. Yet with only two minutes left, I agree you want to use up that clock and not give opponent another chance with the ball. Amat had 4 plays to get it done and possibly more with a first down. So there was no need to rush the TD. if the first two downs you get no ball movement on the run, then you go to do or die passing! I think everyone got excited and got ahead of themselves, and the result was unbelievable. ND handed Amat this game in the last 5 minutes.
I realy think Amats defense was outstanding and created another game they could win or should of won. I thought Koa did a good job for being put in a tough position. He definitly has potential and could lead this team next year, of course he has to work on things but he has time to prepare for that.

The Michigan game was a TOTALLY different situation where there was only :38 seconds remaining(not 2 minutes) when the Wolverines got in short distance and Michigan was using a 2nd year starting Heisman caliber quarterback (not an rattled qb in his 1st start). There was alot of factors that cost Amat the game! 1) Bad Play Calling 2) Penalties 3) turnovers 4) Execution (3rd & short 4th & short) 5) Inexperienced QB 6)O"line could not pick up the Blitz "Every Time"...Too many to list....What I do know is that unless BA gets a decent line within the next few years & a True Passer..Look for more of the same boring ground & pound that they have been executing for over a decade now...That same play Amat always runs..When they all run up to the line & do a quick count!! That play is outdated & every Tom Dick & Harry knows that play already!!..That very same play costed Amat two first downs late in the 4th & 2 goaline turnovers last year when the game was on the line (Alemany,Tesoro)..Unless they use a different form of playcalling or change the entire offensive formation i dont see Amat making any noise in the Pac5 for a very long time~...The Demographics are changing every year & they are not benefiting Amat or the surrounding areas..It will only get tougher to win in the Serra & Pac5 unless you start opening up the Defense..Go to A No Huddle Spread!! Great Game at Bonita.

Hats off to Bonita and Diamond Bar. Sat on both side. respectful amazing fans, Polite and helpful. The running game was there for both teams all night . BHS Griffen and DB #21 were remarkable. I thought Db offense and hard hitting defense were going win this one. 3 BIG plays for Bonita was the final answer. A BIG run for Griffen, a blocked extra point and the blocked field goal were HUGE!!!!

I agree with you. Our outstanding 2-2 record,
the unhappy parents,and unhappy kids are all evident of a program that is heading in the right direction.

And Damien is under scrutiny from the Archiocese now, for a reason.

Attendance is up also, due to Gano's recruits. Unfortuately,Damien pays for their education.
And unfortunately they havent produced that explosive offense. but parents have been assessed an additional 150.00 sports fee (besides the football and insurance fees) to cover some of these costs.

AAron: My thoughts on last nites Bohi-Dbar game. First hats off to Dbar, it was just one of those heartbreaking losses that always come around, just ask Podley. You guys will be formidable in the playoffs. As far as Bonita congrats to the O-line and coach. While not huge you are pulling together and it shows. The tandem of Griffith and Turner rushing and the additional push of fullback Tordovich, they can be tough to stop. One blocked kick is tough two in a row in crunch time is not luck but preparation. Congrats to the defense and to DC Medina on that. On the QB situation Burgett while not strong armed runs the fast paced no huddle offense great. He's smart, he gets them lined up properly and gets the play going. You must have that kind of leadership for this offense to go. I think your "Sunshine" will be fine and it is nice to know his terrific arm is there when needed. It sure would be nice to see Mcaully back, we need him. Venegas enjoy the moment, it does'nt come to often. Nice blocks kid. Dbar travels with a band and we cant muster up a tom-tom at a home game? It's getting almost embarrasing. That one is on you Principal Ketterling.

Damien football is doing well.
The program as a whole has more depth than it has had in the last 20 years. We are better this year and will continue to get better in the upcoming years.
Longtime Damien families and alumni are struggling with the changes. But that doesn’t mean the changes aren’t for the good. They tend to forget many parts of the Damien traditions have much to do with the down side of the school and program which we are finally coming out of.
The school and the program were both in bad shape prior to Coach Gano’s arrival. The football team was below average and enrollment was way down.
Today the football team is just above average and enrollment is increasing.
I will give you the change is moving slower than everyone wants but that doesn’t change the fact that it is still moving in the right direction. A change in a head coach now would be detrimental to both the football program and enrollment. If the administration has any hope of keeping their own jobs which are being highly scrutinized by the archdiocese they need to weather the store and stay the course.
Keep fight and don’t cave.

Just saw #16 Michigan, with arguably the best runner in the nation (at least the best runnng QB) with a 1st and Goal from the 3. They threw the ball into the end zone FOUR Times.

For reference, the play in question comes in at the 2:00 mark.. Sophomore Koa Farmer talks about the play in his interview explaining that he was expecting a double move and jumped it. Hagerty also talks about the play, very briefly, I might add. An illegal formation was called right away so any Amat gain would've been nullified. Koa Haynes had taken quite a few sacks early in the game, at least five, so it was definitely surprising to see him drop back to pass on the first play of the drive. Haynes might have been pressing to make a throw because of all the sacks.

Underrated storyline of the game: What are the odds that two sophomore Koa's on different teams were involved in the biggest play of the game?

Honestly, If I'm calling that play from the stands or as a sidleine spectator, I'm thinking just like you. But I've NEVER been wrong calling a play from there.

As you said, we don't KNOW what anyone saw or why they did what they did. That's why I said what I said about second-guessing. I do know some guys just *think* they can make the play. Alotta times it's that confidence that makes them the player they are. Sometimes it bites them in the butt.

The guy that makes the last out in a baseball game does not "lose" it for his team. There were 17, 20, 26 outs before that. A player who misses the game-winning shot at the buzzer didn't "lose" the game - it's just the most magnified.

It would have been a non-call with the motion penalty. Amat does have a superb staff compared to the rest of the SGV but the difference is Amat can attract big names. I had a relative who worked in the administration during DiFiori and Vetri's resignation tell me the school was receiving applications from people with D1 college coaching experience. There were even a few lower division college head coaches applying for the position. Hagerty has done a great job but if Amat chooses to go somewhere else, it's not like nobody would want to coach a storied program.

I haven't checked out the freshman or jv teams so I don't know if there are any incoming players who can shore up the line. According to maxpreps, there are 3 juniors who average 6 feet and 210 pounds and there's another junior is 6'2, 270. If those 3 juniors can bulk up 15-20 pounds in the weight room, then Amat's line looks to be solid in the size department. They have the heart. They just need more muscle.

You are correct. One play does not cost a game but it's that last play which has the most direct effect, sort of like the final straw breaking the camel's back. There was a motion penalty anyway which would have set Amat back another 5 yards. I thought Amat should have ran it or make screens, short passes, sweep tosses instead of throwing it to the end zone. I'm not sure what Haynes saw because there were 4 defenders waiting there. No Amat receivers were even close to making a play.

Sadly, I think Amat's season will be over next week. I think Crespi or ND will pull out a win, more likely Crespi. If not, 33 percent chance is slim but hey I wouldn't mind being wrong.

It really is easier than you make it Joe Amat. As a coach you do not control what happens on the field, the players do. Yes a fumble here, and an interception there. But as a coach, a head coach, you do control the play calls. You limit those errors made on the field by controlling the calls. In such a crucial period of the game, it was the coaches duty not to take risks. Yes Notre Dame knew we were going to pound it, but so what, it was the logical thing to do. Mix that up with the short little dumper pass to Shay or Sanchez, and you keep the defense on their toes.

To call a pass play on first was just a flat out mistake. A mistake that cost the game and the season. A mistake that a seasoned coach does not make at any level. From the players on the field, to the other coaches, to the parents, and even to the opponents, everyone knew it was a huge mistake.

Do not sit here defending Hags. I have supported his many questionable decisions in the past, as my sone has been in this program for 4 years now. I am an Amat Alumni, my son will graduate this year, and we will always be an Amat family.

But put the blame where it belongs. This game was a fierce battle that did come down to mistakes. Mistakes were on both sides. When they serve it up on a silver platter for us to win and secure a playoff spot, you have to take the gift and go home. Instead, Hags served the gift back to them with that ridiculous, stupid, unforgetable call. The call that cost these seniors, and the entire Amat family an early exit to the season.

So goes the life of a coach and the Saturday Morning Quarterback. That ONE call on the final offensive play cost Amat the game. Couldn't have been any fumbles, interceptions, missed blocks or tackles, or even other calls earlier in the game? Maybe if we eliminate just one of those...??? It's NEVER just one play.

To "Toughloss"- yes, it was. I try never to question a *specific* play call because we don't see what they see or know what they know about what is happening on the field during that game. We're not in on conversations between and among coaches or players. Maybe they saw/knew/thought something we didn't.

If it is SO obvious to everyone here we needed to run Moore at tthat time - guess who else it was obvious to?

So without pretending to answer for Coach Hagerty, we (Moore) was just stopped for no gain on 3rd & 2 then again on 4th & 2 seconds earlier. Maybe they saw something they thought they could exploit. It works and the blog is blowing up about how Hags outsmarted everyone with the element of surprise.(instead of "the days of pounding the ball up the middle are over" and "be more ceative" BTW- the wing-t is "creative"?)

What I did see on that play was #13, I think Jacob Patton, wide open in the left flat near our sidelines. Maybe that's what they thought would be there. The is a school of thought that after a turnover you go straight to the end zone to capitalize while the opponent is on their heels. I don't know our time out situation either. Take a shot, run a couple...who knows.

I trust our staff. You should too. You are crazy not to. Take a breath...look around at other high school football staffs...then thank your lucky stars.

Let nobody mistake that Notre Dame is a heckuva team. In the preseason EVERYone in the SGV talked on this blog about great teams like Serra (Aram would LOVE them because they have "athletes"). Even the those inflicted with "FishBowl Myopia" would not have the nerve to pick their team over Serra (all while suggesting Amat schedule them) This Notre Dame team DISMANTLED Serra 35-13.

The bottom line is this is the Pac5 and everybody is good - some border great. There is not a result of any matchup among the Top 20 teams that would shock me , maybe surprised - but not shocked - it's that even. I just hope there are no surprises next week in the Serra League. Then Amat has 1 in 3 chance of playing again.

I was in the Charter Oak press box, Gano was not there, he was on the roof in the cold with other assistants. The Damien and Charter Oak coaches were on opposite ends, no different than any other high school football games with coaches in close quarters. Is this new? Zernickow does it all the time for San Dimas. I don't know what the big deal is, in the second half Gano decided to call plays from the field. Damien fans are unreal, this is a young team having a great season, and will be better next year, with a freshman team whipping everyone. Looks like Damien's in good hands. Damien fans simply don't understand, Charter Oak is better this season.

QB Mayette did an excellent job. He should get the job full time. Nothing against Wallace hes a good player but he could be better served as a receiver. Last game go with Meyette and leave him there. He is your guy. Fly or die. He can complete the passes when he needs to. Excellent pass to Robinson last night. Ayala has gotten no love by u guys and it is a shame. I agree they are not number one or two but spread the love. These games have been more exciting then the blow outs of CO. I'll take one of these games any day.

If what I read about Gano (accompanied by his usual arrogance) calling plays within ear-shot of the Chargers coaches and grandstand, then he should be fired by early Monday morning.

This guy's a chump, most likely making more money then he deserves, and taking the Spartans down the road to destruction.

Claremont vs. Ayala...
So much could be said about this game(not that many really care but so what 8-D )
First and foremost, when you win, you should do it like you've done it before, you don't celebrate on the opposing team's 50 yard line on their emblem. It shows poor character, a lack of class from the top down and it could cause fights where everyone looses. Second, horrible officiating all game long, the LEAST the zebra's could have done for this game was keep the end of it under control, but no, the cowards literally RAN off the field. They should not accept a paycheck for that game.

The game was a back and forth duel. Ayala doing it's normal thing of late, allowing teams control over the first half, trailing big, leaving points on the field, committing costly penalties... It's really a shame. We're a better team than that... at least I like to think we are.

The sophomore QB at Ayala... keeping his offense in games. What more can you ask for?

This game was lost in two key areas, 1) lack of discipline. When you have a team repeatedly in 3rd and long situations and you do dumb stuff like committing personal fouls, there's a systemic problem. Teh coach better get that fixed or our team is going nowhere fast. 2) Whoever that kid (a former player for Ayala from what I hear)that was on Ayala's sideline and shot his mouth off to the officials dropping F-Bombs at them... you should be barred for life from a football sideline. If you can't keep your piehole shut the get off the sidelines and into the stands off by yourself. You owe that team an apology because you likely cost your Alma Mater that game, and if they al gamed up on you and beat your sorry @$$, I'd probably look the other way.

Ayala v Claremont game was crazy. Ayala all but had the game in the bag when some crazy crap happened. First there was just over a minute to play with Claremont down by six. Claremont's extra point was blocked sending it into overtime. Score now 35 to 34. Ayala is kicking extra point when alaya coach calls a time out. That kick was good. Next kick was a bad snap and no good. Would have tied the game. Ayala looses by one point. Heart breaker.

The thread is called Saturdy Morning Quarterback, so someone explain again, maybe Joe Amat, why in the world would you pass on 1st and 10 from the 12 with 2:11 left trailing 17-12? I don't see the logic. Isn't that the time when you lean on Jalen, your MVP and say if we're going to the playoffs, we're going to live and die with you and let you ride us home. You don't ask a sophomore QB in his first full game who's been erratic all night to go for the home run. It's too risky. And what's the advantage. If you score real quick, you give NOtre Dame lots of time to have a shot at a game-winning or tying field goal? And did you see the pick on the video, he had a receiver at the bottom of the screen wide open and waving his hands. But don't blame the soph, he's learning and was put in a tough position. Everyone's right, Hagerty's done a great job since he's been there, but this play call, with everyhting on the line, was flat-out terrible.

Damien lost was comical to watch. They weren't in the game the entire night. Little QB screens won't get it done. Get in the weight room, arm is weak and the ducks are flying.

Defense is weak and slow. Get in the weight room with your QB.. pushed around all night long, holes were like a mac truck driving through them.

Gano we'll less donuts maybe start practicing what you expect from your players. Weight loss dude and strength and conditioning. Might help the thought process of coaching a team! You're over your head in this league and division.

Solid win over an improved DBar. 6-4 is looking like it's happening.

Whether it's Tanner or Joey, these kids needed to get prepared in the two previous games because I'm very sure either's arm will be needed for the playoffs.

Aaron Burgett has done a nice job managing the game...but he throws a lot of interceptions. Comparing his stats to Diebold's...well he's thrown six INTs and no TDs with roughly the same completion percentage. Rowland is a nice set up for re-inserting Diebold or at least splitting game reps in preparation for the playoffs.

With Cam it looks very certain we'll have our first thousand yard back since De'Andre Belin.

Defense is getting better and the overall team health is rising.

since there was no playoff interest no one was going to notice the Pomona Wilson game, (well that's not exactly true, Fox Sports interviewed them after the game)but 2 of the top RB's in the Mid Valley put on a clinic, Yabrough had about 200 yds in total offense and a healthy (finally) JR Nelson had at least 350 yds in total offense and 3 TD's, great stuff for anyone's hilite reel, and oh, Schreiman did not disappoint either

I think the most competitive and most entertaining league in the SGV has to be the Hacienda. The only thing that is clear is that West Covina is the best team and Rowland is gonna finish at the bottom. Everything else is a jumbled mess. I see DR finishing second since they beat both Bonita and Dbar. Bonita should make the play-offs after winning tonight. I think Dbar should be the 4th team to get in. They beat Walnut head to head. I think LA is totally out of the picture and Walnut just barely has a pulse.

Observation,

I saw the reaction of the players too but I think it was a different player who put his hands in the air. He first looked at Haynes as if saying, "What the hell were you looking at?!" The kids walked back to the sideline with their heads down and Amat fans were definitely grinding their teeth at Hagerty.

Real talk,

I think there's a growing consensus who would like Amat to find another head coach. I'm starting to waver among them. Every coach makes questionable calls but it's the ones that cost games or in this case, the entire season which sticks out. Hagerty's track record this year does not look good. A blowout game against Servite which cost Shay and Alcantara to miss half the year. (Who knows what would have happened if those two were healthy to play against Alemany. Still a lot of woulda shoulda talk.) Hauser transferring and Varella being suspended. This team's graduating seniors are really Hagerty's first class and it doesn't bode well when you miss the playoffs.

These are a few areas that need to be improved for next season:

1) O-line and D-line need to get bigger and stronger. This year's group is the tiniest I've ever seen from Amat. They have heart but heart can only take you so far. If you don't agree, then ask Rudy why he only played one down.

2) Haynes or whoever is going to be qb next year. Hate to say it, but I don't think Haynes is ready to be under center. The kid looked scared out of his mind and missed multiple open receivers. He doesn't read defenses well too and is prone to committing a turnover. There was an open receiver to the right before he threw the pick. (Would have been negated because of the motion penalty which leads me to my next point.)If he's going to be qb, then Amat needs to prep him whether it's attending clinics, studying plays, reviewing tape, etc..

3) STOP WITH THE MOTION PENALTIES! Amat gets about 3 or 4 of these during games. Usually they occur in first downs.

4) Special teams. Amat needs to have a punt returner who can field punts. They muffed punts two games in a row which cost them big time. Don't need to make the big play, just secure the ball. Punting needs to give the defense a decent field position to start. Too often, Amat would have to defend from 30 yards or closer to their endzone.

Aram, I'm not at all blaming it on you...but you use to be the BIGGEST Amat supporter around (especially when this was your blog), but ever since you received a little power to oversee all of the SGV/Whittier area, you've picked against Amat...whats up with that man?? lol...

Sad to see Amat lose tonight. Great job Seniors!! If you get a shot at playoffs, that would be awesome, if not, it was a pleasure watching you play the last four years.

I am completely in shock at this early hour of the morning. I am disgusted with the play call of Hagerty to end the football career of these very deserving seniors, and entire Amat program. I can not imagine what he was thinking. At this level and in such an important game, you do not make these kind of mistakes. I have seen players losing their desire to play for Hags this season, and that is dangerous going forward. The rumbling is not just among the players as many parents have seen blow it this season with terrible calls. All you have to do is go back to the Alemany game where Hags made some very questionable calls. Maybe his time has come? These boys deserved so much better after such a great battle and comeback. Let's see what happens.

Yeah, I don't blame Haynes for that pick because it was all on Hags. Just terrible playcalling. It was less than 2 minutes left in the game but you only needed to go 12 yards. Haynes was erratic the entire night. He still looked like a deer in headlights although he did seem to find a groove in the second half. Only made sense you would run the ball or do short passes to get a first down then get the td. When the interception happened, it's like you can feel it in the stands that Amat's season is gone. Frustration was erupting. I haven't felt so much heat towards a coach since DiFiori called that 40+ yard field goal against Loyola in the playoffs. When I think about it, Hagerty hasn't done much better than DiFiori. Sure, he turned it around from the Vetri years and DiFiori missed the playoffs 3 times but during their first four seasons, DiFiori's teams advanced to the second round of the playoffs twice and were very close to advancing to the semis (02 against eventual champ Los Alamitos 03 against evenutal champ Loyola). When Amat misses the the playoffs this year, the school would have only been past the first round once during Hagerty's four year tenure.
It's very sad when you can point to the one play that ended the hs football careers for seniors like Ruiz, Shay, Sanchez, and Moore. I saw Shay throw his hands up in disgust when the pick happened.

Comparative scores,

CO was up 28-7 at half on Damien. Weren't Amat and Damien tied 7-7 at halftime?

And you better read this before you go thinking Damien played CO closer than it did Amat

Damien (6-3, 2-2) rallied late in the fourth to make the final score look more respectable on quarterback Gage Pucci's 39-yard TD pass to Logan Tracey and 27-yard TD pass to Josh Savage with just over a minute left in the game.

And if you're gonna point out that Amat held Damien to 7, then you'd better point out CO put up 41 on Damien while Amat put up 28.

It's very obvious to just about everybody but certain Amat fans that CO is the best team in the Valley.

But just to help you out, I will call Gano on Monday and ask him which team is better. Even then, you'll probably still be in denial.

I said I'd be the first to admit it so here it goes: we flat out got beat tonight. Stanton, a beast of a QB, ran the draw up the gut at will. Our OL could not protect Medina - he was rushed or saked every time he dropped back. Our highly regarded recievers were not allowed an inch. Freekin' SM is a real deal. Did we have a shot? Yes. Did they blow us out? No. No team has this season.

Now we lick wounds and come out firing against OLu. If we win we're in; we need no help. SEMPER FORTIS!

I was there and saw it all. Yes it was a terrible call by coach. I also can't believe what I saw. But being part of the Amat family means not airing our dirty laundry in public. I understand your frustration, especially with your boy being a senior and his football days probably coming to an abrupt end with no playoffs.

Unfortunately we are all human, and tonight coach just made a grave mistake in the end. We need to let it pass and continue fighting on.

Amat is a great place to get your high school education. The quality of your son's education is first class, and on top of that he was a part of a football program that is amazing to be a part of.

So let's forgive the mistake and be proud to be Lancers. Your son will take away incredible memories, filled with mainly winning years in his football career.

HEY FRED - Since Rosemead and SEMHS have the same league record, how is it that Rosemead has the better shot at getting the coveted "Wild Card/At Berth" spot for CIF PLAYOFFS, the MVL is guaranteed only 2 spots. Now naturally it all depends on next week, but if SEMHS were to win, would they be granted the same consideration as Rosemead? Just wondering is all......

SEMHS vs EMHS

What a game to say the least. SEMHS held EMHS to zero 1st Half Points, Defense kept the Lions at bay similar to how the 1st Half against Arroyo.

3rd Quarter sees El Monte tie the game. It stood that way til the 4th Quarter. SEMHS pushed their way back and forth, and when it looked as if the Lions would score, a DB from SEMHS cut off a EMHS receiver and intercepted a pass and ran it down for a TD, in all the excitement, the place kicker from SEMHS MISSED the extra point. Left the score 13-7.

El Monte charged back and scored on (I believe was) the very next drive. But it was a game of one-ups, or least I thought it was because El Monte's kicker missed the extra point too. [Note, EMHS' kicker also previously missed a FG attempt earlier in the game]

so the score stood at 13-13, so that left SEMHS with the ball at about their own 10 yard line (where the ball was downed after the ensuing kick-off) with about 25 (or was it 32) seconds left on the game clock and the score tied.

Instead of playing conservatively, #16 (SEMHS's QB) decided to throw down field, now at this point I was at field level (in front of the stands but behind the gate), this pass looked DOOMED from the beginning it went up, all the DB from EMHS had to do was wait for it, and it seemed like when he caught it, SEMHS just about gave up, either that or they weren't aware (fast enough) because by the time they attempted to tackle the guy, he scored the TD.

And again SEMHS had the ball now with even less time on the clock, and they finally put in #17 at QB (Mascorro), now if you ask me, I don't understand why they didn't play him at all till this moment. He had a few short plays but the long plays came up short. The QBs should've been switched out earlier than that because EMHS intercepted #16 2x (of those I do remember).

Either way a great game all the way to the end.

I have never come on this blog and written anything. I have always been stunned by the hatred I always felt others showed towards Amat on this blog. My son is a senior, and played 4 years at Amat. We feel blessed and honored to have been a part of such a storied program.

Tonight though I have decided to write something. And I am sorry to say that it will be mostly negative. I am still at this very moment stunned and very mad at the fact that the boys fought all game and put themselves into a position to win and make playoffs. But to everyone's shock, coach Hagerty lost the game for Amat.

If anyone was there, you know exactly what I am saying. With 1:48 left in the game, and us with the ball first and ten at the 12 yard line, you need to pound the ball in and kill as much clock as possible while running in the touch down. But Hags decides to throw the ball and risk everything we fought for tonight, and the entire season.

We have the best running back in league, and the SGV for that. Why would you throw the ball and risk an interception? Coach Hags lost his head tonight, and worse, he lost the game.

Great fight and come back Amat, but it is a shame Coach Hags lost the game for you.

Are you telling us Gano was IN THE BOOTH for the first half and not with his team??? He's not 80 like Paterno! He's not injured like Sean Payton! What -was it too cold?

As we sere sitting on Damien side we heard CO yelling run or pass after Damien broke there huddle and they were right every time.... We were thinking how well they studied film or how predictable Damien offense is.... Come to find out coach Gano decided to call the offense a ear shot away from CO staff inside the announcers booth..... WOW...Not saying Damien would of won that game but, it was quite a different game when Gano found out and went to the sidelines in the 2nd half.... But already to late...Great job CO..... You get it handed to you in playoffs....

High scores dont matter: CO if you would just settle for the win you would still have your starting RB for next week, but since you risked him to try and run the score up look what happened..Dont get me wrong it sucks but it could have been avoided. A win is a win it doesnt matter if its by 50 or 3 pts.

Looks like Amat won the comparitive scores game that Aram was looking for. Amat beat Damien by 21 and ChOak only won by 13. Damien put up 28 pts and should have had more against ChOak while they were lucky to get 7 agaisnt Amats defense. i think that puts that theory to rest, much to Arams dismay.

Gosh! This place is far! We've been driving for 2 hours now and just got to the Woodland Hills exit!

Anyway, I'm worried that we're gonna lose this game against Notre Dame.
I just don't see how we're gonna compete with these guys.

- They've had 2 weeks to prepare for our game.
- Our Offensive Line is really Small compared to their Defensive Line
- Our Defensive Line sometimes comes out playing really soft and gets shoved all over the field.
- Our sophomore QB can't read complex defenses and isn't at all accurate throwing the deep ball. Practice didn't help this week. Koa looked really confused!

I really wish Hauser and Ruiz were still playing for us. Hopefully our linebackers can hold the run. I don't think our DBs can stop the run on the outside or stop the deep ball over the top.

Tonight's CO-Damien game will be interesting if it does rain. CO should watch out for Damien's run game. They will probably try to run as much as possible to keep CO offense off the field.
On the other hand, CO's defense should watch the middle of the field on runs. This is where Gano has done since the start of the season. He tries to use his linebackers as fullbacks so you will know when they will run up the middle of the field.

There's a crazy situation possibly brewing in the Hacienda. If all things fall in place, there could be a 5 way tie for 2nd place.
1. Dranch looses to Walnut tonight and then to Wesco next week and finish league play at 3-3
2. Bonita looses to DBar tonight and then beats Rowland next week to finish league at 3-3
3. Dbar beats Bonita tonight and then looses next week to Los Altos to finish league at 3-3
4. Los Altos with a bye tonight and then beats Dbar next week to finish league at 3-3
5. Walnut beats Dranch tonight and with a bye next week finishes league at 3-3
Westco finishes at 6-0 and Rowland finishes at 0-6

Crazy, but each one of these scenarios is possible based on how the league competition has gone up until now. And with each one of these teams having beaten two of the other teams involved in the tie, it would probably come down to coin flips for the 3 remaining playoff spots. I wonder how you work out a 5 way coin flip?

You're absolutely right about turf in the rain as it pertains to footing. However, let's not forget how rain affects throwing and catching the ball. Teams that rely more on the pass are at somewhat of a disadvantage in the rain...turf or not.

Rain always favors teams that run and grind it out, but most schools have all-weather fields, so it limits the advantage compared to those playing on slippery mud and grass fields. Notre Dame has an all-weather surface, so won't make much of a difference. Same for Charter Oak, Santiago will still do his thing tonight.

Don't know why but I have a bad feeling about tonight's game.

Since "Joe Amat" likes too say that im always second guessing coaches~(last year i suggested that Wallace should be punting & Rio should be playing defense) Guess what?? It happened!!... This year i was pushing for Trick Plays & the No Huddle...They gave me 1 out of two..Guess which one? lol...My last suggestion before tonights game would be..(I hope Coaches are reading or someone relays you the message!)..Special Teams will play a big part in tonights game..Amat cant afford to lose the battle on field position they will already be crippled with Rio not playing & perhaps "Rain" moving into the forecast...Ok lets get to the point!! Amat needs to put either Shay or Sanchez to return their punts A senior with experience with good hands who has the ability to break one open or atleast give you decent field position..No disrespect to the kid who is handling the job rite now.. But he lacks experience & lacks the mental part of the game(when to call a fair catch, when to let it bounce)which im sure he will eventually develop in the next two seasons...Put your playmakers in through out the whole game!! You have nothing to lose at this point!! I may never see the No Huddle cause its not Amat's style but atleast give yourself a chance to win by putting the ball into the hands of your big "Playmakers" (Shay,Sanchez,Moore)

@baseline, Im a Amat fan, but please don't try and stereotype all of us as haters. Im happy for any success that comes to our great San Gabriel Valley and especially Charter Oak and WeCo. These young men have proven to be Champions and most of Amat family can respect that.

Bonita did have the perfect qb last year in Pendleton he fit Podley to a T and they are stil very close friends. But for now I feel Diebold and Halabrin both need a lot of work. I feel if Joey keep working with Chris Rix just like the All state and All area qb GP did that Joey will start the next 2 years just my opinion. I am finally glad all the hype for Diebold is over, let him prove that he can actually play before you give him all the credit. My question to you is Garrett Pendleton the best qb to ever go to Bonita, I know he is the best qb since Podely has been there

The paper gives them respect, but all the bloggers just dawg them out. They lost to RC by 8 and we all know that game could of went either way. RC had a TD called back, just like CO did. CO turned it over in the red zone, just like RC did. It was a hard fought close game. Now RC has only lost one game to Upland by 14, that game was also much closer than the score, and once again RC turned it over in the red zone and Upland had an illegal TD along with some questionable calls by the Refs.

I am a CO fan, just because I like the way they play. I believe they will win Sierra and do some damage in the playoffs.

Amat people face it your team is in trouble and you just hate to see someone else get the credit over your team.

Charter Oak is the #1 ranked team in the Valley. What do you mean they do not get enough respect. O.k. How about "Super, butt kicking, god-like #1. Is that enough respect?

CO will blow out Damien. Bishop Amat will miss the playoffs.

I do not know why CO does not get more respect they are a very solid team. With Santiago at the helm that offense will score on anyone running or passing. CO will win the Sierra League then the real test start. CO wins league and gets a 3rd place team, beats them and they could go on a roll.

Amat without RIO, goodnight now. High School football is tough enough, but when you lose your starting QB, tough to overcome that hurdle for any team. CO loses Santiago, same thing happens.
