UPDATE — CIF officials will visit Cal Hi on Wednesday to look a the field conditions and facilities before giving the green light.

West Covina’s Southeast championship against La Serna will be at California High School on Friday at 7 p.m., where La Serna normally plays its home games. At Monday’s luncheon, West Covina argued against playing at Cal Hi because of the limited seating on the visitors side, plus the field isn’t in the greatest condition. Miguel Melendez covered La Serna’s win over Muir at Cal Hi last week and Melendez said it was one of the worst fields he’s seen all year. A dry, dirty bumpy surface with barely any grass left. There also is no press box, so not sure whether we’ll be able to do a Coveritlive. According to Steve Ramirez, La Serna agreed to provide extra bleachers for West Covina fans, so CIF approved the site. La Serna wanted Cal Hi for another reason too, to keep the Bulldogs off an artificial surface. La Serna High School athletic director Steve Hemenway said that Cal High as of now seats 5,000 and they will bring in extra bleachers between 500-800. “The biggest thing is are their enough seats,” Hemenway said. “We are bringing in extra seats to accommodate about 500-800, which should put us about 5,500.” That means roughly 2,500 to 2,800 seats for West Covina fans. What a shame, last year’s game at Walnut was packed and in the neighborhood of 6 to 7,000 fans. West Covina pushed for La Serna to use nearby La Mirada because its stadium holds roughly 10,000. But it had an artificial surface. In other words, the field conditions were too good to host the game.
