Settle the argument, Pujols or Kemp?

Settle the office discussion: If you were a General Manager and you had the option of signing Albert Pujols for 10 years and 254 million or Matt Kemp for 8 years and 160 million, who would you take? I like Kemp.

    Pujol’s. All Day!

  • Mike Robledo

I like Kemp’s deal better… good luck paying Pujols 25M+ at age 41 (if he’s as old as he says he is)…

Angels sign Pujols— Dodgers sign Adam Kennedy- OUCH!

Angels sign CJ Wilson— Dodgers sign Aaron Harang- YIKES!

Good day to be an Angel fan… but I like the Kemp deal when compared to Pujol’s deal

  • Joe Amat

Kemp. Younger. Shorter deal. Less money. Ipacts the game on basepaths too. Better Outfielder than Pujols is a firstbaseman (although Albet does have a couple Gold Gloves). Paying for Kemps future production in his prime vs costing Angels money for Pujols’ past production in St Louis.

That said – GREAT move by Angels!

Kemp is my choice. Tommy Lasorda terms players like Willie Mays and other like him as Five Point Players and this is Matt Kemp.

    He can Run.
    He can Hit for Average.
    He can Hit for Power.
    He can Field.
    He can Throw.

    Albert Pujols:

    Age? does anyone really know
    Slow on the bases
Can Hit for so so Average
    He can hit for Power
    Fielding average at best.
    Throwing and baseball knowledge????

Remember him cutting off the ball during the World Series…bone head play.

Kemp is by far better all around then Alberto.

The Angels made a great move with Wilson, they will regret signing Albert for that dough as age creeps in and so do injuries. Not a wise move Artie.

Pujols. All kinds of upside for the Angels and with this kind of contract it may limit Sciossa’s mind playing games that cost them Napoli and others. The 25mil a year don’t bother me because 100k a year is just as far-fetched to me. But I’am just surprised there is enough dough in baseball to pay these guys. TV money? I Tivo all sports

  • Kemp Who???

Kemp has 1 good year and you jump on the bandwagon. Let’s hope he doesn’t go back to his mediocre #’s of 2010. Albert will be consistent and if he needs to rest, American league has the DH. Pujols all day, plus he will draw people to the game….

  • 12th man

Pujols is definately the better hitter at this time..Who knows in 5 years?..Kemp has yet to prove he can be consistent on a yearly basis but is overall a better player when it comes to speed & fielding..I dont agree with either deal~ I personally would have signed Pujols to a five year deal & Kemp to a six year deal..The only advantage Pujols has is that he can work strictly on his hitting after 4 or 5 years when the Angels decide to use him as a DH full-time~

  • 12th man

Angels will have a front solid line up….

    1.Eric Aybar
    2.Howie Kendrick
    3.Albert Pujols
    4.Tori Hunter
    5.Mark Trumbo

And then you still have Bobby Abreu,Albert Callaspo,Vernon Wells, Chris Ianneta,& Peter Bourjos…On paper this line-up looks top notch & should produce alot of runs~

Here is a better question. Who has the better team? I will give you a hint. It’s not the Dodgers.

  • Joe Amat

    Kemp Who?

If I remeber didn’t Kemp hit .300, 100RBI, 30 SB, and 25+ HRs in 2009 too. And HRs have gone up every year in his career. That isn’t the sign of a “flash in the pan”

  • Lance R

Thank you Joe Amat.nice!!!. Amat alumni we are talking player vs player. I agree right now team vs team the Angels have it over the Dodgers as of right now. The Dodgers will get it’s new owner that will buy to win as well. A matter of time before the Dodgers are back on track. There is only one L.A. team and that’s the Dodgers. Anaheim is in the O.C..Like Shaq you will start to see the decline of Albert Pujols withing the next two years. This was a mistake. Signing Kemp and keeping him away from free agency was huge for the Dodgers.

  • Jose Offerman’s Glove

It’s Kemp in a routeand really not even that close.

First off, Kemp is 27 years old. Either entering his prime or in the front end of it. He plays a premium defensive position in center field. That is a HUGE advantage. There are many first baseman that put up numbers that are relative to Pujols (Cabrera, Adrian Gonzalez, Teixera, Fielder, Votto, Howard, Konerko)not to say that these guys are better but the spread isn’t very big anymore. Center field doesn’t have that kind of depthGranderson and Ellsbury are very nice players but it doesn’t take long before we get into the Cameron Maybins and Dexter Fowlers of the world. It’s all about positional scarcity, i.e. that is the reason why you would rather have Tulo and his contract over both of these guys or why you would rather have a great quarterback over a great linebacker.

At best Pujols is 31 going on 32 before Opening Day next season. His OPS, AVG, SLG, OBP have declined each of the last four seasons. His Walks went from over 100 per season from 2008-10 to 61 in 2011. He only had 29 doubles last season which is two less than Mark Trumbo. Pujols had an extra base hit in 11.4% of his at-bats last season, the lowest number of his career and was 14th best in MLB. Coincidentally, Mike Napoli led the league (14.9%) and Mark Trumbo was 15th (11.3%). The decline is obvious, the numbers are right in front of us.

He’s still a great player and given the talent of the players around him on the Angels, they will most likely have great success in the short run. Whether he sells more tickets or is the missing piece for the Angels is a whole other discussion but if you were starting a team from scratch and had to pick one of those two contracts there isn’t a GM in baseball who would rather have Albert Pujols at 32 for 10 years $250M over Matt Kemp at 27 for 8 years $160M.

If kemp does what he did last year then he is the better contract, but let’s see how he responds after signing a big contract. That being said I don’t care how much an owner pays. Not my money. Just put a winner on the field.

Freddy’s head will explode when the news that Chris Paul was traded to the Lakers for Lamar Odom and Gasol…

    Paul to the Lakers
    Gasol to the Rockets
Odom, Scola & K Martin to Hornets

    Where are you Freddy?

  • Amat Alumni and Parent

There is a freddie sighting. He was last seen shirtless on the 10 freeway twirling his shirt in the air making siren noises.

  • who cares

Off topic for Prep sports blog.

  • Fred Robledo

Not sure it makes them better but they had to make the deal.

  • angels

Albert all the way he has been consistent for 11 plus sure he won’t be making the same numbers he has towards the end of his contract but in the long run he will make you more money then you are spending especially since I see him getting close to milestones and records oh and by the way the angels just got a tv deal worth 3 billion dollars so that covers the contract by far.
