Decision Week: Time to select player of the year, coach of the year and the All-Area team

The time has finally arrived to select the Tribune all-area team, which includes the player of the year, offensive and defensive players of the year and a coach of the year. There are not slam dunks, everything’s on the table for discussion. The Trib crew will hunker down the next few days and iron it out. For now, tell us who you think is deserving….

    Fred,

Have you always had an MVP along with O & D POY or is this the first year with this format?

  • LA Futbol

As a Conqueror Fan I have three requests…

    1) Dale Ziola = Coach of the Year! (No one did anything even CLOSE to as impressive as what he did this year)
    2) Justin Fa’aola = 1st Team RB (workhorse all year! Quite possibly the most intimidating, physical runner in the valley.)
    3) Shane Virnala = Honorable Mention (Truly the leader of our team. Without him we go 2-8 this year. I know his numbers are not as impressive as others in the valley, but he deserves it!)

  • guest bulldog

    cmon
    Player of the year

is there anyone more impressive than this kid and when healthy and he proved it in the playoffs

    Chris Solomon

  • Rivera hands down

if the tribbers dont put in their usual “favorites no matter what” players, Steven Rivera with 3400 yards, 38 TD’s and only 5 INT’s is the only player who should be Player of The Year, his defense is also noteworthy

  • Sgv Supporter.

Azusa’s Perez #5 should get 1st team for linebacker. This kid was the leader on the defense. He’s big, physical, and intimidated the opposing offenses.

  • John

    RB: Jalen Moore
    SS: Rio Ruiz
    DB: Ajee Montes
    DB: Dionza Blue
    DB: DJ Daniels

I’ve said all year Amat has the best secondary in the valley. They faced 5 legitimate D1 recruits and more than held their own, getting at least one interception in 9 of their 11 games. People can argue who’s the best rb among Moore and Solomon but you have to at least put Jalen there. A true workhorse who never missed a game or fumbled a ball despite the many carries and hits he took.

  • BIGDOG54

Save a spot for Steven Rivera,Arroyo

  • Hacienda League

Justin Fa’aola from Los Altos should defiantly be on this list for Running Back (he carried his team on his shoulder like no other)
Dale Ziola for Coach of the Year (This guy did the impossible; no one thought Los Altos would do what they did)

  • paul

COACH OF THE YEAR – ZIOLA- EASY

OFFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE YEAR – CHRIS SOLOMON W.C . -main threat on a team full of weapons

DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE YEAR – JUSTEN MEADERS W.C.- anchor and leader of defense of most dominant team im the valley

PLAYER OF THE YEAR – JUSTIN FAAOLA L.A.- led league in tds and rushing , also leader on D as linebacker. In must game win to go to cif after 0-10 year he rushed for 270 yard and 3 tds . lets be honest without him their 2-8. hes the M.V.P

I meant to add Adam Sanchez for WR too.

  • coltfan97

People stats are great, and obviously should be included in selecting the all area team!!!! But stats shouldn’t be the only criteria in making the all area team!!!!!

Fred when you say all area team are you including the PSN and WDN areas as well?

  • All Valley

Desmond Reed should get a spot on the All-Valley 1st team. He led the valley and was fourth in CIF in scoring. 36 Total TD’s, 1372 yds rushing, 34 receptions for 634 yds. This kid had over 2000yds total offense. Make sure he gets on 1st team Fred.

  • Dave

Even though the team had a rough season Glendora linebacker Skyler Crawl & Glendora Wide Receiver Josh Pierce should get consideration. Both players were huge contributors for G.H.S.

    I would add these players:

Naim Colbert #20 Chino Hills Sr. LB – Sierra League Defensive MVP

Nick Enriquez #65 Chino HIlls Sr. OL – All CIF last year , 1st Team All League

Jack Austin #3 Chino Hills Jr. WR – First Team all Sierra League

Travis Santiago #2 Charter Oak Sr QB

    Aaron Vaughns Charter Oak WR

  • SFV Football

    Devante Brown San Dimas
    856 yards rushing,222 yards receiving
Alec Zenner-OL San Dimas (3) year starter. Offensive average 442.4 yatds per game

  • Easy choices

Travis Santiago- Charter Oak Qb would have had more yards in the season had he thrown as many times as Rivera has potential at the right school to play D1
Jonathan Thropay- Charter Oak FS had the most int. in the valley, 2 returned for 96, an 100 yards for td great player- will end up D1
Jack Austin- Chino Hil WR was by far the best reciever in the area, for sure in the Sierra, already has D1 offers
Kurt Scoby- CO running back was the best all around back out there, ya he had the rushing yards and touchdowns, but what’s even more impressive was how well he blocked in the backfield on broken plays for Travis! Although a sophomore he needs consideration because he might be by the end of his senior year the best running back the SGV has ever seen

You have to consider Ayala’s #23 Jordan Robinson. Although Ayala did not do well during league, Jordan is by far one of the best running backs that this area has seen in a long time. Unfortunately he does not get any recognition.

  • guest

    #53 raymond amaya offensive mvp

  • LA Fan

    Sidney,
Los Altos doesnt have a WR that is #14… You must have meant #80 Ricky Blair.

    @ Guest…

Ayala’s Jordan Robinson did get some All-Sierra League love and some Rogan’s Hero’s love, but you’re right he deserves at least as much pub as some of the guys that get a lot of ink do. He’s a stud in Football and Baseball. I hear he’s an even better baseball player than football player. If that’s true, that’s seriously scary.

That’s an easy one. Hands down, according to Aram, its gotta come out if Covina….. All season the valley’s best have came outta Covina… Lol…. Aram ur a joke… By the scores Pomona is the team that gave Monrovia a run for their $.

Remember look at Livingston’s numbers, and remember he missed two games!!!!!

I want to see how many people will talk trash at the names I mention!!!!!

  • All Area Voting needs improvement

Best RB I seen all year was Moore for sure. Soloman is a by product of that crappy offense in my opinion, taking nothing away from his ability to run 65 yards to the endzone untouched. However hopw much better is he than any one else who basicallt does the exact same thing for WC at that position? For me you got to be better than every one else on your team to be all world in my book. Heck even SD’s Barbone was a “god” at one point a few years back with a similar crappy offense.

As far as QBs go…Rio was stellar in his biggest games, Santiago killed every one who didn’t fight back and Rivear is just a freak of nature so my pick goes to ALL THREE…stupid to hold any one of them accountable for where or who they played…all were flat out studs for their teams. The All Star game practices should clear things up a bit but that’s too late for All Area selections.

WR…Adam Sanchez is the best I’ve seen in years. Sick as they come and far better than any one I’ve seen in teh Sierra League since Damien’s Freddie Brown who ended up in the NFL practices.

On a personal not I’d vote for Alex Hernandez, Boykins and Jalen Castille form Damien if I had a vote. Always practiced and played lights out and would be a great addition to any program or team. Just sayin.

Last point…Amat had a RG who was small and worked his butt off. Don’t know his name but I played that position and it was an honor to watch him play…way to play football kid. Always over sized and often over match, this kid made Moore’s wheels go all season.

  • paul

humors me all the what ifs .. what if he played at smaller school ?, what if bigger school? , what if he threw more ? what if he rushed more ?,what if he was healthy ?cmon people these are to reward the kids who performed at a very high level this year under the certain hand that was dealt to them. Not the what if award

  • JMO

QUIT wasting your breath people because Fred has already made his picks! I’m pissed about one but I’ll keep my pie hole shut about it until it comes out in the paper. There was a ton of talent this year and I know your going to hear a ton of crap this year Fred but as long as you don’t have twelve OL, eight DL or fourteen WR like every league does I’m good.

  • paul

so word is players are chosen , so when do we find out ??

  • VVL

One name Sir Darius Pomona, this kid lead the Valley in yardage. Dont have his numbers but I saw that this kids ypc is extreme high, well over 10. Now lets factor in this kid didn’t have a West Covina or Covina type line to run behind. Just image the numbers this kid would have put up with a quality line.

  • HuskyPride

Jamie Canada has to be on this. West Covina, Monrovia,C.O, Damien all area top teams can attest to Canada’s play:

West Covina (Defending CIF Champs): 8 catches 242 yards 2 tds

Monrovia (Defending CIF Champs) :5 rushes 29 yards 1 td, 2 catches 53 yards, 1 kr 100 yards 1 td

Charter Oak (Areas top team all year: 5 catches 94 yards. was south hills only weapon throughout the game.

    Damien: 1-1 passing 53 yards 1 td, 10 receptions 189 yards 2 tds

he proved every game to be the best player on the field (except for maybe chino hills, they did a good job against him)

  • SgvFan

After only seeing a couple Amat games, I’d have to say that d-lineman Sal Velasquez should be on this list easily. The kid went up against nothing but d-1 prospects and made an impact!

  • truth hurts

    @LionPride

jesse gaytan was overrated, i saw the SEM vs. EM game and he was getting punked by #54 on the offensive side and by #21 and #54 once again on the defensive side. the only reason everyone looked at him was because of his size.

  • Solomon hands down!

Chris Solomon for POY hands down! Think about it without the threat of Solomon there is no Jimmy Frazier!

  • SupaMan

They should have a Dual POY award.. RB’s Chris Solomon and Jimmy Fraizier. Combined over 3000 yards. Dominated every team in the playoffs. West Covina with these two backs, put up 84 points in a CIF Championship game…

  • bulldog fan2

#65 OL George Castro from West Covina, should definately get honors. Without him creating the holes for Solomon and Frazier to run through they wouldn’t have back to back titles, and oh yeah, when he plays defense, the offense always averages (-) yards when he’s on the field…..don’t believe me…? watch all the games and see for yourselves…..I did.
