Sierra Vista beats power Salesian 1-0 to win inaugural boys soccer tournament

Sierra Vista won the inaugural Sierra Vista/Baldwin Park boys soccer tournament on Saturday, beating power Salesian 1-0 in the championship at Sierra Vista High School.

Dons sophomore defender Osvaldo Castro scored off a corner kick with 15 minutes left to seal the deal, converting a loose ball while fighting for position on the corner.

Sierra Vista beat Long Beach Wilson in the semifinals 2-1, completing a big weekend for coach Jose Rodriguez, who team improved to 5-2-1.

Baldwin Park, missing several starters because of injuries, lost to Salesian 3-1 in the semifinals, then lost the third-place game to Long Beach Jordan, 4-3.

“It was such a great tournament,” Rodriguez said. “With Salesian, Baldwin Park and some of the teams in our tournament, I knew by the end of it we would know where we’re at in terms of level of play.

“Salesian touches the ball around so well, but we had a game-plan and we played great on the defensive end. It was a big win for us, this gives us a lot of confidence going forward.”

Congrats to S.V. for the tourny title. Such a great tournament thats only gonna get better. Great teams invited and all played very well. B.P. was missing quite a few starters due to injury and also Red Cards vs Pomona, so were not allowed to play in the game. Great effort though and good time to get backups some quality playing time. Congrats to all teams involved.

I’m disappointed with the lack of soccer coverage in here. I have to wait 2 days for results on the tournament, while there is STILL football stuff being put up. An even baseball stuff which doesn’t start until after the winter season…

Guess the players handled their business on the field, “as it should be” !

I hope all the controversy is over with. Salesian as usual showed a lot of class showing up and continuing a soon to be great tradition of community with the SGV.

Congrats to SV for a great game. That’s what it’s all about, making each other better for down the road games that will get us all Championships runs.

The “beautiful game” is alive an well.
