Sierra Vista beats power Salesian 1-0 to win inaugural boys soccer tournament

Sierra Vista won the inaugural Sierra Vista/Baldwin Park boys soccer tournament on Saturday, beating power Salesian 1-0 in the championship at Sierra Vista High School.

Dons sophomore defender Osvaldo Castro scored off a corner kick with 15 minutes left to seal the deal, converting a loose ball while fighting for position on the corner.

Sierra Vista beat Long Beach Wilson in the semifinals 2-1, completing a big weekend for coach Jose Rodriguez, who team improved to 5-2-1.

Baldwin Park, missing several starters because of injuries, lost to Salesian 3-1 in the semifinals, then lost the third-place game to Long Beach Jordan, 4-3.

“It was such a great tournament,” Rodriguez said. “With Salesian, Baldwin Park and some of the teams in our tournament, I knew by the end of it we would know where we’re at in terms of level of play.

“Salesian touches the ball around so well, but we had a game-plan and we played great on the defensive end. It was a big win for us, this gives us a lot of confidence going forward.”
