Breaking News: Glendora football coach Todd Quinsey resigns after 3-7 season

| | Comments (25) |

Glendora football coach Todd Quinsey resigned on Friday after just one year and going 3-7. Quinsey, a walk-on head coach and substitute teacher, took over for Mark Pasquarella after he resigned, and did well considering the Tartans' brutal non-league schedule and the tough Baseline League. In fact, five of Glendora's opponents are still alive in the playoffs, Monrovia, Colony, West Covina, Upland and Rancho Cucamonga. They also took on area No. 1 Charter Oak and played them tough. Quinsey, who was not expected to receive a teaching position at the school, said he resigned in order to look for full-time work.

I read all of these posts, and it's pretty sad. Yes, Quincy was over his head, and the fact that he didn't teach on campus was a logistical nightmare, and probably a financial one too. Yes, the Baseline is way of Glendora's level. The I.E. just makes their boys bigger, more diversity at the skill positions, heck even Charter Oak sitting in the crossroads of Glendora,Covina and San Dimas gets the runts from everywhere else. Glendora football was on the rise starting with the 5-0 league champs in 08, but the 09,10 -TRI-Champions after going 3-2 in league, doesn't really do much for the fans. Re-leaguing, realignment with D2 and not D4 in CIF, has hurt the team quite a bit. Glendora is pretty much only has 2 middle schools to choose from, and their boundary stops north of 210, so there is a bifurcation in the city, Upper-Middle class white kids above the 210, the working class and 80% of the mobile homes in Glendora are between Gladstone and Arrow that gets a lot more diverse.

"half cab no cab" wasn't wrong in his review of administration, some of them have just been there a long time with no real education background. Doesn't make them bad people, or doesn't make them not wanting to better the school. I believe that they are, but you can't get blood from a turnip. The school has dropped in Enrollment last 5 years and the Socio-Economic times aren't helping the team. But I do like the Ideas of Zernickow, Morrison was again from Damien, but we've looked past that before. Heck If I remember Ken Edwards was a pretty decent coach and his son is at UTEP and was SGV player of the Year in 08.

Glendora is a great job for someone who will be around a while. I have met Brandon Roher and he is a good young coach and while Head Coach of the JV team at Glendora he was something like 32-1. Let's just hope the Glendora Administration gets some new seats and the parents step aside and let the boys play.

Joe Amat said:

lack of intelligence,

it's real simple. IF there is a teaching job in Glendora - Brandon is GONE. Woulda been last year. GHS already went the route of someone no one is talking about. He wouldn't have been fir...forced o...resigned if they didn't have this in mind.

YOU apparently don't understand how competitive coaches are. They don't WANT to beat up on the Azusas, Sierra Vistas, and Gladstones if there is a bigger alternative.

If BR takes the job he won't be losing that many tears...if any. He's a young guy. Being an alum, with connections in administration, we all know about Lopez - but he also played basketball for LeDuc he'll stick around long enough to get tenure and keep his job. Then when it runs it's course he get's on the administrative track and life is good.

Of course, if Zernickow doesn't beat him to the punch!

A little intelligence for ya said:

No chance Brandon Rohrer leaves La Puente for Glendora...For Glendora that league is too tough for the talent Glendora has. Rohrer is better off trying to knock off Azusa and winning a few league titles at La Puente then move on to a better program. A program that isn't going to continue to get screwed by the re-leaguing committee. The next coach at Glendora is going to be someone no one is talking about...Good luck to the GHS football players, screw the parents and lame critics on this blog. It really is a bummer there is a lack of intelligence on this blog...You all need to stop bashing players and coaches. If it was easy to be a coach or an administrator you'd be doing it. I know this because it's easy for you to sit there all fat, shoving food and beer down you throat and posting stupid comments that make no sense, have no merit, and do not apply to the topics at hand.

Glendora People Still Dont Get It said:

"So every single team that doesn't get to a Championship Game are losers?"

That's a simple answer!

YES!

So 90% of teams are losers? said:

So every single team that doesn't get to a Championship Game are losers?

How about you? Did you win a Championship? Or are you a loser as well?

Somthings never Change said:

Oh that's right there are still people in Glendora bragging about Coach PsquelLlaaahhhh and his Sierra league titles Hey loser you're in it to win CIF titles not league titles. Come on down to Charter Oak.
LOSER!

Surely Mike the Clone has the right answers after years of saying Coach Pasquerrella and his three straight SL titles were not enough. How about local resident Scott Morrison? Tons of Glendora backers came to his side in his time of need and said he was a very good high school coach, why not give him a chance? He has family ties to the school, knows the area and can bring his staff from Workman over wholesale.

MTC, with all his wisdom and years of second guessing every "Bag Piper" move is clearly the Oracle of the Foothills. So Mike, your public awaits.

OB has a point said:

Old Bagpiper you may have a point.Le Duc does have some pull here at GHS and only because the parents here kiss his backside and only to want their prime vacation rental spots down at Le Ducs Newport Beach properties over the summer. Some of the parents here disgust me.

Old bagpiper said:

We all need to realize Le Duc has run this place for years and dictates the climate for every program and coach. For some crazy reason, the admin's are pushed by this guy. Great HS coach, but focuses on what is best for him. Until someone gets this guy to understand his place, and not control everything, your coaches and admin's are sunk. What they need is a solid, experienced local person to be the AD and let Mr. Spangler return to the classroom and coaching where he is awesome for young people. Couple that with a change at the top and you have a formula for success. Sadly our community feels the right to hammer the admin's and coaches at will while ignoring how our stare legislators have destroyed our schools. So get over yourself, give the coaches credit they deserve limited by the policies and lawmakers you vote for every November. A change in the philosophy and not cowering to parents will again make "the bag pipies roar"...Go Plaid!!!

TartanMAN said:

One answer......ZERNICKOW.

Glendora....MAKE IT HAPPEN! Give him what he wants/needs.

Make him comfortable. He will get it done, especially since they won't be in that league much longer.

tDro said:

Tough job for Quinsey, obviously. Hard to say they should've done any more than they did. Competitive with CO and West Covina while largely staying in Monrovia until De'Shawn Ramirez's punt return for TD in the third that sort of broke the game open.

That said, now is the time for the Tartans to get a coach that will be the Coach for a long time coming. Would hate to say Brandon Rohrer and put any more pressure on the guy who has done an outstanding job at La Puente. It would be unfortunate for that program which has got a good administration and they are really doing positive things over there. Glendora would be lucky to have Rohrer at the helm for years to come. The alure of a job at your alma mater is always enticing as well.

Zernickow would be another great candidate. The running back on the 89 CIF champion team, he would make for a lovely story as well.

As far as the culture at Glendora, I think Lee Spengler does an outstanding job as an AD. This talk of Lopez's education is out of line as well. Glendora does have a good administration that cares... Look at the success of the baseball program. Glendora is fortunate to have coaches like Dan Henley, Janet Pollard, Mike LeDuc, and of course Mark Pasquarella when he was there... Having a down year after Pasquarella left was expected. Having a down year in the Baseline is to be expected in football. Clearly, Glendora was on the wrong side of the re-leaguing process. None of this points to an administrative problem or a culture problem. People tend to overreact and overanalyze things. It was not long ago that Glendora had won three straight league titles and earned playoff wins over UPLAND and West Valley.

Relax, Glendora people. Things will turn around. Adding a coach like Rohrer or Zernickow will again get the program moving in the right direction. Pasquarella was outstanding at Glendora and people were spoiled by that as hard as it was to understand at the time. Now, they just need to find stability and make a hire that they can stick with through the next decade. The resources are still there.

Wow, to be honest I think "half cab no cab" just said what alot of people have observed or think but to afraid to write or talk about.
I can tell you that you really must be an insider with the school district to bring up the Curtis Frick comments, lol.

I'm sorry Glendora Fan's You are NOT & NEVER WILL BE a football school or power, even if you had Vince Lombardi as your head coach.Even on a good year look at the league your in !!! Good Luck !

We want Zernickow. Bring in the wing Z. Guy is a great coach and a glendora legend. Has done all he can do at San Dimas. Time to come home #22 and bring us a title like the old days. Tartan football.

half cab no cab said:

Well I second the administration problem at Glendora. Almost none of them have any experience.

Paul Lopez, Principle: Ex-head football coach after the beloved Karno years, then moved to Offensive Line coach when Pasqy got there, it was beneath him so in 07 he took a Dean job, then after 4 years of Dean he becomes Principle. He has no education background, he has no administration education background, he has on hand experience but having an above room temperature IQ and being at the school 15 years, and that you graduated from GHS, doesn't make you qualified to run THE SCHOOL.

I can't bag on LeDuc or Norell as VPs, both have been great, I mean LeDuc is a legend, of course he can sit behind a desk and count how many kids from his Tracy Murray Camps he can give apartments to.

But the Deans and the A.D. Same story over and over again. Ensmen is a good RaRa mom, Runs ASB and the Assemblies, she's been there forever too. But other than being a blonde, she does nothing for the advancment of the school. Lee Spangler, GREAT GUY, coached football and baseball at Gladstone and Glendora, the problem with being a nice guy, it doesn't qualify you to make a decent decision. Again, has no education chops, taught Freshman CP English/History. Malone and the L Brothers were the heart of the Freshman Football Team, Spengler babysat. Spengler as A.D. , before him Brock Jacobson, okay your brother hung some banners but come on a Masters from APU doesn't qualify you to be A.D. at GHS or Principle at Goddard. He fumbled the Green Team incident and with the boosters being one of the best in valley, these parents should not stand for such amateurism. Better than Curtis Frick that ran Sandburg to the ground, then left for his hometown of LaVerne only to play tennis at the Claremont Club and relive his glory days at Damien and ULV, now riding some desk at Bonita school district HQ. Jacobson, Spengler, Nice guys both of them, but LeDuc is a one-track minded kind of guy, and Spengler and Jacobson, hasn't done anything except make sure the Chartered Buses get there on time.

Show me some education, show me some real devotion to character, not this crony nepotism. It's only high school sports, but bringing in a Charter Oak guy, heck Pasqy was from Damien, Pasqy said he would never leave, but went to Covina as soon as his star QB left for San Diego.

Bring back Vega and Malone for a year, look hard, maybe convince Roher to do it, find someone with some real character, Replace Lopez, do some real change, because as Real Estate prices go back up, no young families can in 2011 move to Glendora, and getting extra money from the state to have Charter Oak, San Dimas, and Northern Azusa kids flood the school to make up for a drop in enrollment will only work for so long. I love the Tartans but Bergslein and Shwartz with the band, have better chops, and a better winning percentage too.

This is sad to see I guess people will do anything to win!!!! At the high school level no less!!!!

If you think only 2 or 3 parents contacted the coaches and admin your fooling yourself and your out of touch with the program. I personally know of 10 parents who called the school. With one of them being me. Glendora parents wont and shouldnt tolorate what happend this year.

Observer said:

The Glendora parent thing is way over done. There are maybe 5 to 10 that show up to watch practices and of that maybe 2 or 3 will contact the coaches.
Maybe back in the day it was different but not any more. There is more apathy with the parents than anything else.

QB Coach said:

I feel bad for Coach Q, players and parents. This was an abortion right from the begining. The administration screwed this up right from the start. I for one have little faith they wont screw this up again.
I also think Roher would be a fool to take the job at this point. Even though Roher is connected to this administration they just don't have the ability to manage the parents in a way that would allow him to stay focused on coaching.
This is clearly a buyer beware on so many levels.

It should be obvious to everyone by now that the real power behind coaching changes are the teacher unions. With no staff jobs available for extremely qualified men or by accepting a position sacrificing your senority and then get dangling in the wind ala Arrellanes of Los Altos only walk-ons will be firing off resumes. Until some body takes the fight to the unions on this issue you will see a steady decline of quality coaching staffs and the problems walk-ons bring ala Howard of Muir will occur more frequently. Many programs at SGV schools are coached by little more than little league experienced dads and egotists with little ability in handling young men. To bad we've let the unions do this to football. One simple remedy is to just let our coaches keep their senority when they transfer just like so many other agencies do. Good luck Quincey, and Rohr if you do accept a Glendora position don't quit your day job at La Puente.

We sure didn't predict that when he was hired - did we?

Agree with TM - what does Rohrer teach? Will there be a spot THIS year?

Trojan Man Author Profile Page said:

Best of luck to him .

The cupboards were NOT bare , I think he should have been a little more competitive .

I went to 2 games & they HAVE the players , the offense WAS HORRID !

The lower levels have numbers & should have been WAY more competitive than they were.

Bring In Brandon !!!

Fight On
