Boys Basketball Rankings: Lutheran and Damien on top, but Glendora can make a statement in Baseline League opener tonight at home against mighty Etiwanda at 6:30 p.m.

Tribune Boys Basketball rankings
1. La Verne Lutheran (13-4) — The traveling Trojans disposed of Chino Hills and Westminster last week, and will take on New Jersey’s St. Elizabeth on Saturday in the Hall of Fame Classic. There are still several big non-league games ahead against Orange Lutheran, Mater Dei and Price.
2. Damien (13-1) — The Spartans’ Sierra League title quest opens at Claremont (Wednesday) and home Friday against South Hills. The Spartans are ranked No. 1 in Division 3AAA, and what I love about that is Pasadena, the best on the West side, is No. 2.
3. Glendora (12-4) — Who made this schedule? Ready or not, Glendora takes on defending league champion Etiwanda (13-1) at home tonight at 6:30 p.m. in the Baseline opener. Etiwanda’s only loss came in the championship game of the Pasadena tournament against — you guessed it, La Verne Lutheran, 72-61,
4. Bonita (12-4) — The Bearcats opened the Hacienda with a 48-34 win over Diamond Ranch and take on West Covina (Wednesday) and Los Altos (Friday). Hey, they’re still the team to beat until they get beat.
5. Chino Hills (10-4) — The good news for Chino Hills is they won’t take on another team like Lutheran the rest of the season. Wait a minute, maybe Damien is just as good. The jury’s still out.
6. Northview (13-5) — Beat Baldwin Park and Pomona handily to open the Valle Vista, but big games are still to come against Covina and Nogales. In Monday’s win, Treavon Francis dropped in 41 on Pomona.
7. Ayala (10-3) — They could be Sierra League spoilers because they have a team capable of beating anyone with their size and athleticism. But they’re hit and miss.
8. Walnut (12-5) — Opened the Hacienda with wins over Los Altos and West Covina and can run their league record to 4-0 with wins over Rowland and Diamond Bar next. The Rowland game is key, the Raiders can beat anyone in league.
9. Rowland (10-6) — Losing their league opener to Los Altos is tough, but the Raiders showed in December tournaments they’re not going anywhere. They can hoop it up.
10. Covina (10-5) – The Colts are the only team not to have played a Valle Vista League game. That changes this week.

Damien has only lost ONE game and LVL has lost FOUR. How is it possible that LVL is ranked ahead of them?

  • Fred Robledo

Because I think beating Etiwanda in the championship game of the Pasadena tournament is more impressive than winning the Glendora or Covina tournaments…plus they won some big non-league games and crushed Chino Hills…

This is why for three years I’ve begged these teams to play, especially this year with Lutheran’s Jerrett and Damien’s Reyes both seniors. But they opted not to, so now it’s up to me to guess, and I’m guessing Lutheran wins in a head-to-head. But I would still like Damien’s chances.

So wait, they beat some decent teams, win a good one – yet lose 4 and they still are at the top? You mean losing to really good teams doesn’t drop you in the Trib rankings? Even when someone else is 13-1 “in their world”? I don’t get it?
Ask Aram – he’ll straighten you out

Aram has his way, I have mine.

Is Colletta back yet for tonight’s game?

I agree with the rankings Lutheran is better than Damien period.

  • VVL

Covina has played one league game against Wilson and won 52-46

If you are just asking I’ll answer. The 13-4 team has been playing “big boy” basketball. The 13-1 team has only played one “big boy” team…AND LOST!

The 13-4 team slapped Etiwanda around. Etiwanda would also slap that 13-1 team around. Etiwanda is a “big boy” team.

That 13-1 team won’t play any “big boy” teams until the CIF final when they finally have to play Pasadena. Then they will see that playing Covina, Workman, Don Lugo and the rest of the Sierra League stiffs didn’t prepare them properly.

Your joking right about Damien, they are good for their league but to play in the other leagues would get them crushed, Big guy from Damien is not that good anyway, taht is why he is going to St, Marys

  • Basketball different than football?

SGVs Best – so what you’re basically describing is Bishop Amat football. they play the big boys, win some lose some, but the teams that bounce around and get great records in the Fish Bowl get ranked higher – even though they’d lose to Bishop head to head

Hey Glendora purists! I know Glendorans like to take swipes at private schools about out of area students. That (very old) picture was taken a few years ago before GSD became a “District of Choice”.

Allow me to describe the photo…

I see a bunch of native Glendorans who starred in the Glendora Youth Basketball program as kids. Unfortunately they are all up in the stands NOT PLAYING.

The player in the foreground (blurred) is a kid who is from the Charter Oak School District.
