Basketball Roundup: Duarte girls hang on in nailbiter over Workman; South Hills and Damien boys win, will meet Friday

Workman’s Evelyn Herrera drops in 33, But Duarte hangs on for 79-77 win in Montview Showdown Imari Brown scored 27 for the Falcons: – Experience in close games proved to be the difference in a Montview League girls basketball matchup for first place between defending champion Duarte and upstart Workman on Wednesday night. The Falcons (9-1, 2-0), who were 14-0 in league play last year and advanced to the CIF-State Division IV championships, scored on a short jumper by Imari Brown with five seconds left to pull out a 79-77 victory over the Lobos.
With the score tied, the Falcons’ defense forced an over-and-back call with 10 seconds left. They got the ball to Brown, who sank the jumper for the win. Brown led the Falcons with 26 points.

Chris Arzadon had 16 points to lead the Raiders (11-6, 1-1) while Derric Mar added 12 points and eight rebounds. Brandon Croom had 11 points to lead Walnut (12-6, 2-1).

Sierra League
Chino Hills 64, Ayala 38
The Huskies opened Sierra League play with a win over their crosstown rivals. The huskies were led by Michael Navar who had 15 points, while the Bulldogs were led by Jared Ponce and his 15. It was the league opener for both schools.

South Hills 72, Charter Oak 61
Korey Serna had 22 points, while Steven Rubin-Woods had 16 and Jeriko Santos scored 15 for South Hills (12-6, 1-0). Charter Oak (9-8, 0-1) was led by Kody Brown with a game-high 26 points.

Damien 64, Claremont 52
St. Mary’s bound forward/center Chris Reyes had a triple double, finishing with 17 points, 11 blocks and 10 rebounds in the Spartans’ league opening win. The Spartans host South Hills on Friday.

Valle Vista League
Covina 59, Nogales 48

Mike Peters had 32 points and Nino Harrell added 11 rebounds for Covina(11-5, 2-0). James Santiago had 24 points for Nogales (3-1 league).

Wilson 53, Northview 50 (OT)
Bryce Kato hit a three-pointer with 1.6 seconds left in regulation to tie the game for the Wildcats.
Brandon Miramontes led Wilson with 13 points, eight blocked shots and six rebounds.

Nikki Wheatley scored 24 points and Sarah Jackson added 12 points, 10 rebounds and three steals for the Bearcats (14-3, 2-0). Natalie Lam had 12 points for West Covina drops (7-8, 0-2).

Diamond Ranch 69, Los Altos 28
Chelsea Barnes led the Panthers with 21 points as Diamond Ranch improved to 2-1 in league play. Tyvette White added 17 points and Tai Lark had 13 points. With the loss, Los Altos fell to 7-10 overall and 1-2 in league play.

Montview League
Azusa 40, Ganesha 17

Marissa Chaves scored 17 points for Azusa (3-11, 1-1) as the Aztecs. Ganesha dropped to 4-8 overall and 1-1 in league play.

Valle Vista League
Wilson 43, Northview 30

Kelli Calton led Wilson (12-5, 2-1) with 16 points, 10 rebounds and four steals. Diamond Machabie led the Vikings (4-11, 2-1) with 10 points .
