Final CIF-SS Basketball polls: Once again, private schools have a huge advantage over the publics … Pairings announced on Sunday

The final CIF polls heading into Sunday’s CIF-Southern Section pairings are in these are all that matter. The tournament season and league is virtually meaningless because everyone goes there separate ways in the playoffs with huge advantages for private schools, where enrollment plays a much larger role than competitive equity, despite what anyone says. In boys, Damien is right where it should be, leading 3AAA with Bonita at No. 8. Two-time state champion Lutheran is No. 2 in 4AA, and Glendora slipped all the way to No. 12 in 2AA. But don’t count the Tartans out, they’re in a winnable division. Other teams like Covina, Northview, Wilson, Azusa, Walnut and Chino Hills, all of whom had solid seasons, virtually have no shot in the postseason because of their divisions. Speaking of which, the Bishop Amat girls are still No. 1 in Division 3A despite a 16-9 record and 2-4 mark in the Del Rey. Like I mentioned, league play is meaningless. Bonita is No. 2 in 3AAA and Diamond Ranch is No. 3 in 3AA. Those three are the only teams with a realistic shot at titles. You want to know why basketball playoffs smell of unfairness? While Amat is No. 1 in an easy division with public schools that can’t compete, Duarte and Workman have no chance of doing anything in Division 4AA with teams like Serra and St. Bernard — the teams that beat up on Amat in the Del Rey. Will someone explain how this is fair?

    Hey Fred!
Ayala Boys are ranked #8 in 2AA

  • Son

These are not the “final” polls, these are the last ones the public gets to see. On saturday the final polls get voted on and submitted and thats what you will see on the bracket. You been around long enough fred, you should know this stuff!

  • 12th man

I thought Keppel girls basketball team made the playoffs also?

  • 12th man

Keppel has a legit record 21-3 & should be ranked in the Tribune..Their only losses came to teams who are Nationally ranked ahead of them #82 Chaminade,#70 Alemany,& #1 La Jolla Country Day~

  • Son

I can answer that for you 12th man (since you and me both know fred wont comment on a girls post for his blog, lets be real here)

he wont rank you because like where I coach you are a pasadena star news team. therfore you will only be ranked in their paper and blog…. however the bigger issue is why does the psn not update their blog… Fred want to get off a boys post and comment. I been coaching longer than your blogs been on and since the tribune and star news are linked together i would loved to know why you guys put zero effort into girls sports

  • Fred Robledo

Son, these are the final “public” polls before the playoffs … Is that really what you want to call me out on? You’ve been around long enough to come up with something better than that :) And have absolutely no idea what you’re talking about saying we give no love to girls sports, that couldn’t be further from the truth ….

  • Son

you know what fred i will bite the bullet on this one and apologize, I did not mean you BUT i do fully mean your boy at the star news, his lack of coverage to female sports (not just basketball) is despicable. he only post on certain schools and 90% of the time he only post on boys sports….

  • Coach

Thanks for having a reporter at the SL vs Charter Oaks basketball game.

  • SGV Tribune the best

    @Son
Are you nuts? Fred is the hardest working sports reporter in the valley. The Tribune does a great job covering “Tribune area” sports. I can see why Star and Daily Bulletin readers would feel underserved by their papers.

Fred, speaking about coverage, when are the Softball and Baseball previews coming out?

    Thanks for all you do.

  • MVL09

Dorothy Tuala of South El Monte should be someone to watch out for. She plays center on the basketball team, but coach doesn’t know how to use her. She has already won an AAU national championship in 7th grade, so she is someone to watch out for in the future.

P.S. Rosemead, Arroyo, and El Monte coaches want her to transfer to their school. (Rosemead coach even told she has a starting spot on his squad if she chose to transfer when she was a freshman)

  • Fred Robledo

Baseball and softball previews will likely come out on Feb. 28 and 29 respectively, with the season opening for both on March 1. Speaking of March 1, two huge games right off the bat with Damien and Bonita baseball and St. Lucy’s and Bonita softball…

  • Huh?

I’m not sure what Fred means when he says that private schools have a huge advantage in the playoffs.

Last year the teams in Division 4AA would have been spread out amongst Divisions 2-4 based on competitive equity not all crammed into one division. As it stands, the two best teams in CIF-SS are likely to be whoever wins 1AA and 4AA.

So no, private schools do not have a huge advantage, the schools that reap the most benefit from the realignment of the divisions are the public schools in division 2 and 3.

  • Damien

Bonita – Damien opens up on Friday, Feb 24th at Bonita, not March 1st. In fact, all of the teams involved in the Dick’s preseason tournament play that weekend so your preview won’t really be a preview since a good number of the local teams will have 2 games under their belt. Here is the link.

You’re absolutely right, I’m working on getting the previews ready for the 21 and 22…Winter sports threw me a curve and starter a week earlier too…I hate that baseball and softball season start during the second week of winter playoffs….Might be hard covering those games now…playoffs are a priority…
