Boys Basketball playoffs: Bishop Amat wins in miracle finish, rallying from 13 down with 2:01 to play to win OT, 66-61; Charter Oak shocks second seed San Marcos; Glendora, Damien, Bonita, Walnut, Covina and Chino Hills advance

Bishop Amat wins in overtime, 66-61: Bishop Amat’s unbelievable finish against visiting Wilson in the second round of the CIF-Southern Section Division 3A boys basketball playoffs Friday night was worth every comeback cliche imaginable.

Game Story: Glendora Senior guard Kyle Gordon scored 26 points and the Tartans held host Whittier to 25 percent shooting as the Tartans won its first CIF-Southern Section playoff game in three seasons with a 57-37 victory over the Cardinals in a Division 2A game at Perry Gym.
Game Story: No. 1-seed Damien made such quick work of visiting Citrus Valley in a 54-31 victory in the Division 3AAA second round, that coach Matt Dunn found himself emptying his bench much to the delight of a rowdy student section that itself probably played a role in the Blackhawks’ demise.
Game Story: The Bonita High School boys basketball team pulled away in the second half for a 59-44 win over Brea Olinda in a CIF-Southern Section Division 3AAA second-round playoff game at Sonora High on Friday night.

Since I am in hibernation mode, I will be monitoring all scores tonight on Twitter. Make sure you follow me. My twitter handle is James_Escarcega. We had a great time doing Wednesday night, so we’ll have more fun tonight…

  • Let’s go Whittier!

Knock out the Tartans! Get them out so they can spend all their time bashing the Trojans. If they do get by you, their season is DONE in their next game when Leuzinger runs away from them!

  • ghsalum08

glendora is ready to go great week of practice and there going bring it

  • Best Game

So many of these first round games are mismatches, and result in blowouts. Not so with tonight’s Bonita vs. Brea Olinda game…check the Maxpreps rankings and you’ll see this is an evenly matched encounter, and sparks should fly.

  • ghsalum08

the dameian citrus hill game i think will be the best matchup 2 20 win teams

  • Bonita vs. Brea Olinda game being played at Sonora High School in La Habra.

  • This is awesome! The Damien Spartans had a great first round playoff basketball game on Wednesday. Chris Reyes was a stud on defense. He blocked three shots in mid air! I saw the video highlights on the Sportscenetv website. It’s at

  • Ayala Fan

    Hey Fred!
Why no mention of Ayala Boys Baskebtabll? They were ranked 4 in your last Valley Poll?

  • Fred Robledo

A mistake, I added Ayala, sorry about that…

  • Colt74

Sorry to see Northview and Wilsons seasons come to an end last night.

Bishop Amat and my Colts have their hands full with Alemany and St. Johns Bosco now.

Good luck to all still suiting up.

  • Fred Robledo

Wilson should have beat Amat. The key moment of the game was this..

After Wilson’s Ryan Del Rosario made one of two free throws with 13 seconds left for a 53-50 lead, Wold looked for a game-tying 3-pointer with 5.4 seconds left, but was bailed out on a late foul call, giving him three free throws.

“That’s a tough call in that situation,” Wilson coach Jason Rochwerg said. “Usually refs let the kids decide the game. I have to look at the film on that, I didn’t see it at all.”

  • Get a grip!

Try to be a professional for a second here Fred. Wilson blew a 13 point lead in 2 minutes and all you can talk about is one play. Wilson didn’t lose because of that one call. They lost because they didn’t handle their business in crunch time.

Also, I’m wondering about this quote from your article, “As much as Rochwerg wanted to complain about the officiating down the stretch, he took the high road.” How do you know he wanted to complain? Did coach tell you he wanted to complain or are you just putting words into his mouth?

  • Fred Robledo

In a game story I’m writing it straight, on the blog I’m giving you my opinion. When you talk to coaches afterward, many times they voice their frustration, but don’t want to be quoted on the record. You can read into that what you want. I never said the call determined the game, I just thought it was a terrible call, which is MY OPINION….

  • Get a grip!

“bailed out on a late foul call” is writing it straight?

I wonder what your biased writing looks like.

  • Fred Robledo

Yes, he missed it and was bailed out on a late foul call…You mean you’ve never read a game story, whether the NBA or college, where a writer didn’t describe a player getting bailed out on a call after missing a shot? Would love to know if you were at the game and watched what everyone else saw…

  • everyone in the building knew

everyone at the game knew that the ref was biased on that call, he didnt even blow the whistle until he knew the ball missed and was rebounded by Wilson- game over, no one was 3 yards from the guy who got to shoot those foul shots, and the same thing on the Kato foul during that stretch, wilson just was not going to win that game, he made sure of it

but it is what it is – most people dont remember – Wilson had lost 37 league games in a row going over a 5 year period, until last January a year ago,

last year Wilson went to the 2nd round in CIF, this year they tie at league with a 9-3 record and again advance to the 2nd round,

not bad for an 0-37 history just 2 years ago

  • sgvpride

I wasn’t at the game but I can get what Fred is trying to say. Too many times even the refs get caught up in the momentum of the team making a rally comeback. Or they just make bonehead calls because a player makes or misses a shot. At the high school level the officiating is terrible. They should request tape like college refs do so they could review what they actually did.

  • Get a grip!

Yes I have seen articles that say a shooter was “bailed out”. But that is a complete non-sequitur to the conversation. You already revealed your opinion on the blog. It is reflected in the words “bailed out”. If you were writing it straight, you would have written that the official called a foul while shooting a 3. You injected your opinion into your “straight” article. Nothing wrong with that, just own it.

Yes I was at the game. It was the type of play that could be called either way. Yes, the defender hit the shooter’s arm. However, in my experience officials tend to “swallow the whistle” in those late game situations unless the contact was “major” or “hard”, which it was not. In short, it was the kind of foul that usually doesn’t get called, but a foul nonetheless. For the record, I was closer to the play than you, Coach Rochwerg, or the section of Wilson fans that you were adjacent to.

You haven’t given an opinion on Bishop’s comeback. I wonder what you think. Why did the lead shrink to 3 points so quickly? How did Wold get open on that play in the first place? Why didn’t Wilson guard the inbounder on the play where Olivera made the game tying shot at the buzzer? What were they doing on defense that last 2 minutes? Wilson has no one to blame but themselves for losing.

  • How the mighty have fallen!

The sad thing is that Bishop Amat has fallen to the point that we’re celebrating an improbable come-from-behind overtime win vs the 3rd best team in the Valle Vista League and questioning whether or not that even should have occurred given the officiating.

  • Jefe

Good luck against St. John Bosco, Covina.
