Girls Basketball Semifinals: Bishop Amat will play for fifth title under coach Wiard, beats Covina 46-32; Bonita, Diamond Ranch come up short

Bishop Amat defense too much for Covina in 46-32 win: Defense has been what’s taken the Bishop Amat High School girls basketball program to lofty levels. And it was defense on Saturday night that punched the Lancers ticket into next week’s CIF-Southern Section Division 3A championship game at Anaheim Convention Center.

The Lancers got visiting Covina in a hole early, then used their defense to never allow the Colts to dig out. The 46-32 victory has Amat on the verge of winning its fifth Southern Section title under coach Richard Wiard.

Bonita can’t keep up with Arroyo Grande, loses 46-30: There will be no repeat of last year’s magical run to the CIF finals for the Bonita High School girls basketball team.

The second seeded Bearcats (27-4) lost to third seeded Arroyo Grande 46-30 in a CIF-Southern Section Division 3AAA semifinal game.

It was the final game in historic Ellsworth Green gym as the Bearcats’ new facility will open in the fall.

“The girls have a lot to be proud of,” Bearcats coach Darren Baumunk said. “No one expected us to be back in the semis after losing what we did last year. It’s tough right now but we defended our (Hacienda) league championship and had a really good run.

Diamond Ranch battled hard with No. 2 Alemany, but lost 46-34: The third-seeded Panthers (25-7) held a five-point halftime advantage and led 28-26 with two minutes left in the third quarter at No. 2 Alemany (29-2), but Diamond Ranch struggled down the stretch in the defeat.

Chelsea Barnes had 16 points to lead Diamond Ranch, which made only 2 of 15 field goals and committed five turnovers in the final 10 minutes.

Tyvette White added six points for the Panthers, who were outscored 27-10 in the second half, including being held scoreless for a stretch of nearly five minutes in the third and fourth quarters.

Bishop Amat beat the Covina Girls by about 15. Covina could only get offense from Badoorf and could not make free throws. It was not a pretty game. The Private school against public school argument will heat up again. It was comical to hear Amat players being announced from Chino,Whittier,Arcadia,East Los Angeles, etc. This is just not fair not matter how you look at it.Yes my team lost they got beat by a more athletic team .Also that Amat public address announcer needs to tone it down a bit. He so favored the local team in his announcing. I pointed out to him after the game what a homer announcer he was .A public announcer is supposed to be neutral just like the referees. Aram was there and I told him so. Why don’t you discuss this Aram and Fred the guy was brutal.

To get respect you have to give respect. It showed lack of class from the Covina head coach to not shake the Amat player’s hands during team introductions.

  • NobleFan76

Hey bfan why is it so comical? Build it and they will come.

  • bfan

Noble fan 76 just for your info that is very common for the head coaches to let his assistant shake hands during introductions. It had nothing to do with respect.

This is what Fred was saying all year long, why is an at-large wild card team like Amat seeded three and in this division. Looks like they will coast to another cif title in a division they should be no part of it. I don’t get it, I thought past years success had something to do along with enrollment for placing teams in this division. amat is going for its fifth title in 10 years or so, so why aren’t they competing at a bigger state with tougher public and private schools, just like in league. makes no sense at all except that the wiards and cif are so connected, kathy wiard and new assistant cif commissioner who is from charter oak and a close friend of the wiards, conveniently laid this out nicely for amat. great year covina, your coach is coach of the year hands down.

  • bfan

Brutal, you are correct. This is not right.Amat had no business being in this division. I am speaking not just for Covina but all of the other teams effected by this as well.CIF is always policing everything. They need to take a look in the mirror and police themselves. Unfortunately who you know is sometimes more of a factor than what you know. Why not set up a private school division and a public school division.CIF you need to get this right for the majority not just favor the minority. What do you all have to say on this. Let’s hear your thoughs.

More states than not separate public vs private. Why is that? Do those state governing bodies for HS sports have more firing brain cells than our CIF? I have my opinion, you have to come to your own conclusions.

Still, with that being said Bishop Amat was in our division and has been since day 1 of this season. I will NOT cry about it after the fact. 5 BA girls and 5 Covina girls were on the court at the same time. Their 5 beat us. Period. Seems we ( in every sport ) have to have our worst games at the wrong times. It happens and it happened.

So now nothing left to do but to congratulate Bishop Amat in their victory and wish them good luck in their title game. And also congratulate the Colts for their accomplishments this season.

The time to question divisions was at the start of the season, not at the end. Doing so now takes away and belittles the Bishop Amat staff and players.. I refuse to do that. Let them enjoy the moments. They are too few and far between.

Great year for Covina Basketball! Both girls and boys won two CIF games only to be defeated by strong heavily recruited private school programs, and both teams won league! I think there is a strong argument to be made that both Covina coaches are deserving of coach of the year honors! Keep the success coming Colts! Stay True to the Shoe!

The real issue is Not Public or Private , but to get the schools in the right division, regardless.
In girls BB, public will win 90% of the CIF divisions, but schools like BA, Serra ,Winward, St. Bernard, etc, do not belong in 3A and 4AA respectively. They should be in 1AA -2A and face schools like Brea, LB Poly, Etiwnada,Troy, Mater Dei, etc. That’s the issue.

  • Just saying

Are you serious? Blaming the PA announcer? It’s not like he was playing. BTW have you ever heard the Miami Heat announcer?. Are you going to blame him also for Miami winning their games. I’m just saying….

  • RegentGary

    Agree with you Just saying.
This was a BA home game and the PA announcer should be a homer. If on a neutral court in the CIF finals , then it’s a different story. Apparently he doesn’t attend too many big time games like college where all the home announcers are “homers” If Amats annouincer wasn’t a homer, he should be replaced

  • SGV’s Best

Someone actually told off the game announcer and is bragging about it?

That same person is placing some blame for his team losing on the game announcer?

    Now I’ve heard everything.

Covina had a GREAT year based on preseason expectations and everything they accomplished but would you say Bishop did? They are going to win the championship and I wouldn’t say they had a great year. They played other similar schools in league that can recruit and lost almost all of them. They are just in the wrong CIF division. Its like UCLA playing against a community college.

  • Regent Gary

    Basketball Fan,

Are you sure UCLA would win against a commumity college? As I said in a previous post, BA is in the wrong division, and Coach Richard Wiard is laughing his way to another CIF championship.

  • coltfan

As Charles Barkely would say, Cinderella teams are rolling in their graves. Fourth place at-large teams winning a title should be a special story, but not when your at-large is a third seed that would have been a top seed if not beaten so thoroughly in league. What have the playoffs proved? That the CIF championships are nothing more than glorified winter tournaments. This isn’t even close to one of Amat’s good teams but you could have handed them the trophy in December, just like the one they get in the Arroyo tournament every year.

  • bfan

Covina boys and girls had a great season and exceeded expectations with neighborhood kids.I say Nick Masi for girls coach of the year and Will Bissman for boys coach of the year. They might not have had the best overall athletes but they made the most of their opportunities.

  • announcer

Are you serious bfan, you’re complaining about an announcer that is a homer?
I guess you haven’t been in the covina gym, and been subjected to the
“c-toooouuuuuuwn” everytime a covina player touches the ball. Talk about an annoying “announcer”. Get that guy to stop and then you can complain about other announcers.

  • Real talk

Come on man all of you know what time it is when you play Amat. Just take the lost and move on. It is nothing new to be hated on by teams just ask the girls soccer team baseball team or football. If i had a child playing sports in any city near Amat he or she would be going to Amat you better belive that.
