Baseball: Mater Dei scores in bottom of the seventh to beat Bishop Amat 5-4

With Bishop Amat trailing 4-3, Mater Dei walked in the game-tying run with the bases loaded and two-outs in the seventh to make it, 4-4. Rio Ruiz pitched the bottom of the seventh and walked two, got a strikeout and fly out. But with runners on the corners and two outs, a passed ball scored the runner from third and Mater Dei won, 5-4 in front of an estimated 1,000 fans at Mater Dei.

Game Story: Two storied high school baseball teams opened their nonleague schedules and didn’t disappoint those in attendance Thursday night.
With five CIF-Southern Section championships between Mater Dei and Bishop Amat in the past seven years, more than 1,000 fans showed up and saw the host Monarchs pull out a 5-4 victory on a passed ball in the bottom of the seventh inning.

The game actually starts at 6:00 pm but you might want to arrive by 5:00 pm to secure a seat.

Betcha a dollar their are more people at the first baseball game of the year than at La Verne Lutherans championship game. Somebody count for me.

  • IDK…

Serra will forsure bring a crowd and it should be a great game just for random spectators. So not many La Verne Lutheran fans but you will see a lot of people i am guessing in the stands.

    LET’S GO AMAT!!!

Mater dei should be to much for Amats first game. mater dei returns 7 starters from last year and is considered their best team in 15 years.Amat will lose and the coaching staff will learn from it.Amat should be fine the rest of season.

Today I decided to watch the semi-final contest between JW North(defending D1 champions) vs REV. Both teams were 3-0 coming into this game. Well JW North taking advantage of a bad first inning by REV pitcher Jackson McClelland(UCSB) scored 3 quick runs on walks. REV came back to score one run in the bottom of the first off JWN hurler Raimund Garcia. Both teams scored a run in the 7th and the game ended with REV having left 2 runners on base. Final score was 4-2.
JWN defense is outstanding especially the 3b-ss. Hitting was average although they faced 2 REV D1 pitchers in McClelland and Justin Jacome(UCSB). REV hitting this year is not as good as in prior years. Redlands will be the CBL favorite.

Tough to pitch with your hands around your neck!!!

What?!!!! hands around your neck???? Your not talking about RIO.
RIO is confident and one of the TOP high school baseball player in the country. Amat played a great game coming up short. MD was the better team last night.

Unless you were there, you shouldn’t talk. The place was smaller than I thought, but it was packed, standing room only. Mater Dei is definately a very good team. But Amat is definately as good. We are definately younger, and last night it didn’t matter, as the boys stepped up and played toe to toe with the Monarchs. Rio was great. He is definately the leader of the team, and a class act. We lost on a pass ball. Last year we started slow and soon gelled as a team. This year, we are already weeks ahead of where we were last year.

Make no mistke, Amat is definately for real this year. We will be making a run for back to back. And we are a top team in socal and the nation. Mater Dei realized that last night, but so did we the Amat Nation.

  • SGV Observer

We went to the game to see what the two top socal teams would show early in the season. I wasn’t disappointed. A great exciting game. Mater Dei was not the better team last night. I think the two teams were dead even. Mater Dei knew Amat was good, and they know they got lucky. The two teams were definately evenly matched. Rio Ruiz is for real. Anyone who has not seen this kid play is missing out. But don’t worry, you will see him play at USC, that is if the MLB doesn’t woo him with millions in the draft.

By the way, my boy plays baseball at another top baseball school in the SGV. You will hear about him in the coming years.

  • Amat Dad for the record, a friendly reminder that the word definitely has an i and not an a in it. No disrespect, just holding us Amat folks to the highest standard.

  • lumberjackbaseball

Have to start it off by saying Amat baseball is “OVER RATTED” this year and can’t compete in the OC

  • Even Stevens

Lumberjack – losing bu a run in the bottom of the last on a passed ball is competing. It doesn’t get closer than that

Amat loses again against huntington beach. 0-2 again like last year.last year they where able to avenge their losses against esperanza and palm desert later in the season. They will figure it out and get it going like last year.
