Baseball: Mater Dei scores in bottom of the seventh to beat Bishop Amat 5-4

With Bishop Amat trailing 4-3, Mater Dei walked in the game-tying run with the bases loaded and two-outs in the seventh to make it, 4-4. Rio Ruiz pitched the bottom of the seventh and walked two, got a strikeout and fly out. But with runners on the corners and two outs, a passed ball scored the runner from third and Mater Dei won, 5-4 in front of an estimated 1,000 fans at Mater Dei.

Game Story: Two storied high school baseball teams opened their nonleague schedules and didn’t disappoint those in attendance Thursday night.
With five CIF-Southern Section championships between Mater Dei and Bishop Amat in the past seven years, more than 1,000 fans showed up and saw the host Monarchs pull out a 5-4 victory on a passed ball in the bottom of the seventh inning.
