CIF State Wrestling Championship Saturday: Northview’s Salinas tops locals with fourth-place finish at 145; Chino Hills’ duo Goens and Martin place fifth and seventh, respectively

BAKERSFIELD — Northview High School’s Bryan Salinas came up short in his quest to become the fourth Viking to win a state wrestling title.
But the weekend was hardly a failure for the sophomore, who followed up last season’s appearance at the CIF State championships with a fourth-medal after winning two of four matches Saturday at Rabobank Arena.
Salinas, who wrestles at 145 pounds, was joined on the medal podium with Chino Hills’ Brody Goens, who was fifth at 182, and Christian Martin, who was seventh at 113.
“It’s a good feeling,” said Salinas, who advanced to the semifinals on Friday before going 1-2 on Saturday, losing in the third-place match to Simi Valley’s Samuel Duchene, 6-5. “I would have liked to win that last match, but I made a few mistakes.
“But overall, it’s a great to finish fourth. I just want to keep improving. I’ll comeback next year and improve.”

Salinas, who won the CIF-Southern Section Southern Division title two weeks ago before finishing second at Masters last week, opened with a 4-2 setback to Gilroy’s Willie Fox in the semifinals. He followed with a 2-1 victory over Modesto Central Catholic’s Ray Lomas in the
consolation semifinals before losing 6-5 to Duchene in the third-place bout.
Duchene, who scored a takedown with two seconds left in the match for the win, also beat Salinas for the Masters’ title last weekend at Temecula Valley High School.
“I felt good during the first two periods, then got tired in the third,” Salinas said. “I saw (the move coming), but he hooked my leg and pulled me over.”
Goens and Martin, who did not place here last season, made history for Chino Hills by becoming the first Huskies to place at the state meet.
“That’s really cool,” said Goens, who after losing in the quarterfinals on Friday fought back to go 3-1 on Saturday and take fifth with a victory over Ripon’s Trevor Smith (9-4) “Christian and
I have done a lot of things together. To place at state with him, it’s cool.
Goens, who lost to Smith, 18-5, in Friday’s quarterfinals, went 3-1 on Saturday, with victories over La Costa Canyon’s Paul Head (7-4), Chico’s Mark Jorgenson (6-3) and Smith (9-4) in the third-place bout. He lost Cypress’ Yoo (10-1) in the consolation semifinals.
“This was definitely one of my goals,” Goens said. “For it to finally happen is great, awesome.”
Martin, who lost in the quarterfinals, earned seventh after beating Santa Ana’s Johnny Sanchez, 8-6, in the consolation fifth round to clinch a top-eight medal before losing to La Quinta’s George Lopez (6-3) in the consolation quarterfinals. He then beat Arnulfo Olea
(11-6 in the seventh-place bout.
“I’m glad to place,” Martin said. “I wanted to win that match and end it right. I just didn’t want to finish last (among medalists).
“It’s a first for the school. I feel like we started something for the school and it’s good to get Chino Hills recognized. They always call us Chino. Hopefully, this is the beginning and this will help the program develop into something and they can get guys who qualify every year.”
