Amat wins: Of all the matchup advantages to be found on the court in Wednesday’s CIF State Division III first-round playoff game between the Bonita and Bishop Amat high school girls basketball teams, the biggest one turned out to be the heart of Lancers forward Leeah Powell.
Powell, who is 5-foot-5 but plays much bigger than that, scored 14 of her game-high 18 points in the second half, including 10 in the third quarter, to lift Amat to a 41-30 win over the visiting Bearcats.

Lutheran wins: It’s not often a CIF Southern California Regional playoff game is a warmup for later rounds, but that was the case Wednesday night for La Verne Lutheran when it took on Ontario Christian at the University of La Verne.
The Trojans (24-7) used a combined 43 points in limited action from their University of Arizona-bound seniors Eric Cooper and Grant Jerrett to easily dispatch of Ontario Christian, 80-50 in a Division IV first-round game.

I was at the game last night. It was a good game. Both teams took a tactical approach. In the first half Bonita did a good job of getting Kennedy and Jackson involved. Even when Kennedy went out of the game in the second quarter, Bonita was still able of control the game. The game turned when Kennedy came back in the third quarter. Amat played her more physical the closer she got to the basket. When Bonita was able to get her the ball. She had to fight through the contact and shoot tough shots. Powell just took the game over after she hit the 3 pointer. Once Amat got up by 5, Bonita seemed to press and turn the ball over. Amat then just executed over the last 4 minutes. It was a good game both teams played well. The difference was that Amat made the plays down the stretch.

In other words Bishop got the calls, or non calls, and was able to match it a wrestling match. No offense to Bishop, who won the game on the court but clearly the headline told the story, “Amat bullies it way”.

No biggie. Last year the game was played on the court without much interference form the refs, this year the refs “let them play”. It happens.

Best of luck to Bishop from here on in. Great job by the Bonita family who represented themselves well. What a great group of kids. Kennedy joins her former team mate at LMU and soon Wheatley will be doing her thing on TV.

Tough to argue Bonita’s sport’s programs are doing something right.
