Amat wins: Of all the matchup advantages to be found on the court in Wednesday’s CIF State Division III first-round playoff game between the Bonita and Bishop Amat high school girls basketball teams, the biggest one turned out to be the heart of Lancers forward Leeah Powell.
Powell, who is 5-foot-5 but plays much bigger than that, scored 14 of her game-high 18 points in the second half, including 10 in the third quarter, to lift Amat to a 41-30 win over the visiting Bearcats.

Lutheran wins: It’s not often a CIF Southern California Regional playoff game is a warmup for later rounds, but that was the case Wednesday night for La Verne Lutheran when it took on Ontario Christian at the University of La Verne.
The Trojans (24-7) used a combined 43 points in limited action from their University of Arizona-bound seniors Eric Cooper and Grant Jerrett to easily dispatch of Ontario Christian, 80-50 in a Division IV first-round game.
