She’s Safe: Yo ump, you blew this one

It wouldn’t of changed the outcome of Chino Hills’ 11-2 win over St. Lucy’s on Wednesday, but here is the play Regents fans were furious about. Brandi Harkness smacked a lead-off liner to right field in the second inning and appeared (in the photo) to beat the throw at first, but the umpire emphatically called her out. Who knows if a big inning would have followed, St. Lucy’s only trailed 1-0 at the time, but it was a terrible call nonetheless, and not even close. You can see the ball still five to eight feet from the glove as Harkness touches the bag. What a potential momentum-killer. I was sitting near left-field and couldn’t help but notice Huskies outfielder Patricia Parks laughing about it.

  • Got Coaching?

Fred please email the UIC and the Umpire a copy of this photo to remind them that they do in fact get it wrong more than they think!

Maybe on even number days you have to touch 1st base with your right foot first?

The moon was in his eyes?

Could this guy also ref football games in the fall? Looks familiar. I think he has been spotted reffing CO games.

  • Way to go

Bigger picture seems to be-St Lucy’s parents can’t get over they did not live up to their own self inflicted hype. Let’s see spent the beginning of season and past few years blaming the coach. Oh, let’s see this time must have been the ump. That’s it, must be his fault the score was 11-2, with a grand slam. Nice example and role model for your kids on taking responsibility. Don’t tell me you guys will also complain to your child’s future boss if they get a less then perfect evaluation. Seriously, the team lost and they lost BIG.

  • Adults ruin the game for kids….

    “way to go”…..

If this happened to CH you would be complaining just as loud. SL girls were beat and the coaching issues were glaring. You obvioulsy don’t know the issues about the so called SL coaches. Fred wrote the article not the parents or players. It was a bad call and I doubt it would made a differnece but I don’t think one parent will knock the CH’s girls for a great performance. Immature comments from you are just not needed.

  • just enjoy your win and let em wine if they want

    way to go….

yes everyone should also know what a momentum-killer does — if the right call is made it can change the out come of the game even though the writer says it wouldn’t. it can change the circumstances of the grand slam –it can change who gets up at what time in what inning etc…– but…that’s softball, or baseball —judgement calls aren’t always the right calls — thank goodness there isn’t instant replay!!

Coaching issues… come see for yourself… come see how the head coach RYAN coaches. Will he argue a call? Will he engage with his players? will he engage with his other coaches? Will he ever go on the field? Will he ever talk to players? We have a great pitcher on the bench who he wont warm up, he is so busy thinking about HOW TO GET BACK AT PARENTS THROUGH KIDS he can’t possibly coach. Again, this is saint lucy’s HEAD COACH.
The good ole “Who is better” …. CH won and SL didn’t and we do have serious coaching issues. No one at SL is saying that CH didn’t deserve to win they did and they should be proud. In this TB world we all know many of the players and we wish them good luck. Enuff with the pounding of the chest. Saint lucy’s has just as many college athletes as CH does sooo whats your point?
Chino Hills has talent granted but don’t count all your chickens just so fast. Wins feel great we all love them. CH won and we lost now what?
Saint Lucy’s has serious coaching issues but it wont change because RYAN is all about HIMSELF. He cares not one inch about these players even though he says he does the only thing he cares about is his title HEAD COACH.

  • Stop complaining

If I were the coach, I’d buy earplugs too.

  • http://jorgen wishful

You SL parents complain so much about the coach, you outa try a couple of weeks at Glendora, youd be beggin to go back to good ole SL

  • Truth Hurts

CH out hit SL. Parents need to stop filling their children with negative comments about the coaching staff and stop mentally affecting the kids performance worrying about stats and the competition. Let your children play. Let them have their own voice. CH has beat SL in the past and still today. Bottom line SL did not hit. Are both teams extremely talented absolutely…. it’s only game 3 in League. Let’s see who the last team’s standing.

  • BitarBob

Whats happned at Glendora? They are always complaining about the baseline but their other teams seem to compete. I remember hearing there were major problems las season but whats with this year??

  • Cong ’76

Where can someone view the photo of this play?

  • http://jeff whishful thinking

Glendora is not competative in baseline with the exception of 2 sports. In softball the only difference now is that in the past we had good enough pitching to overcome the coaching(or lack thereof) now we dont

  • Bumblebee

At Glendora is the bats/fielding or the pitching. I am not seeing 10 runs scored against every game and at the high school level if you are not scoring 6 a game you are not winning unless you have Monica Abbott.
