Boys and Girls athlete of the year?

This will be the fifth straight year we name a boys and girls athlete of the year and would love your thoughts on who should be considered. This award recognize’s the best boys and girls athlete with participation in at least two sports. Specialization has ruined the two and three-sport athletes, but there are still a lot of quality throwbacks that play multiple sports and excel.

The Tribune’s first athletes of the year were named in 2008, Northview’s Hannah Fraijo and Glendora’s Michel Edwards. Who should take the picture this year?

  • Valley perspective

Steven Salinas from the View. Ive watched a ton of athletes throughout the valley this year with coaching and such but this kid just became a Sophmore National Champion and took 3rd at State during the wrestling season. He was part of a rebuilding Football team and if wasnt wrestling nationally probably would have done something during the spring. I would agree with Nikki Wheatly from Bonita for girls but if its Seniors only then I guess we will have to wait for these two but give them their credit because they are two of the best in the area.

  • 2 choices: Horine or Nelson

The choices for POTY should be multiple sport athletes: these r among the top

    Football
Horine: Hac League Defensive P of the Year / All CIF DB / most certainly will play in SGV all star game in June / CIF playoffs

Nelson: VVL 1st Team Offense, VVL 1st Team Defense, All CIF RB /Maxpreps National Player of Week List(B Park game) / one of 2 SGV players to represent CA in CA-AZ all star game in June (Santiago of CO the other)

    Stats:
    Horine: rushing 19 67 yds 1 TD / rec 27 485 yds 7 Tds / tackles 64 / 2 punt ret 36 yds / healthy 9 of 11 games

    Nelson: rushing 211 1704 yds 13 TDs / rec 10 87 yds / tackles 46 / KOR 13 386 yds / healthy 7 out of 10 games

    Advantage: probably a draw

    Basketball
Horine: MVP Hac League / SGV Trib MVP / SGV all star game / CIF playoffs

Nelson: All VVL Team / League Defensive Player of the year / CIF playoffs

Advantage: certainly Horine, though no one the whole season, ( not even Francis of NView) got scoring avg. teamed up against Nelsons defense

    Track & Field
The only comparison found: H Jump Horines best this year 510 Nelsons best 62

Nelson: qualified for CIF prelims: 110m hurdles, 300m hurdles, H Jump, 4x400m relay // qualified for CIF Finals 300m hurdles (national Top 100 listing)

    Advantage: Nelson

    Other tangibles:

Letters added this year to jackets Horine 2 Nelson 5 (3 in sports)
CIF patches added this year to jackets Horine 2 Nelson 4 (3 in sports)

Overall: tie, but many will see basketball as more important than t&f

Bonita gets it for both boys and girls?

Freddie. can your bring yourself to having them both be from the same school?

Would help if coaches posted stats. Sure would like to know what kind of season Travis Santiago is having in baseball.

  • Stanford Dad

How about Fischer from Diamond Ranch along with Horine and Nelson. I know it’s never been done but this year all three really did everything they could for their teams and when individual performances, such as Track and Field all three have shined.

Horine for his three years of getting better every year, in every sport while staying incredibly grounded. Plus I coached him and somehow I didn’t ruin him, so that’s got to count for something !!!

Nelson because of the numbers he put up and the tremendous show of character for not transferring when all those around jump either jumped ship or told him he could get a D1 scholarship if he stayed put, so much for the haters.

Finally Fischer for all the right reasons, he’s an academic stud, an athletic stud and he did all this while playing for one of the most demanding coaches in the area, my buddy Roddy Layton.

  • Bulldoggy

Damn right Aram! Let’s see the stats first. Horine and Nelson are DEFINITELY above and beyond. Santiago should also be on that list. Before his team had a HUGE meltdown against us, that Omana from Diamond Bar threw really nice. Ruiz would have been up there too if not for injury. Fischer was good at track, but he missed not only his senior season in football, but most of his junior season too. Player of the Year should be someone who COMPETED for the year. As for the idea of putting up 3 for the spot, get real. That’s a slap in the face for Horine and Nelson. My vote, Horine.

  • team sports vs track and field

“many will see basketball as more important than t&f”

does that mean track and field isn’t a gauge of an athlete??? I would think it is the purest test of an athletes ability.

But if that is the case, then not so good for Wheatley – half of her resume is field events – HJ, LJ, Triple J

  • Real Talk

It says athlete not “student-athlete”…if this was a student-athlete award I would agree that Fisher has to be tops – considering California State Heisman Winner and Champion of Character Award Winner while maintaining a 4.5 GPA and playing Football & Running Track ( he didn’t miss his entire senior football season – ask Bonita, Chino, DB, and Damien; he was by far the best athlete on the field in all those games).

  • R Gary

Jackie Macy or Jasmine Warmington , volleyball players from St. Lucy’s. Both were all CIF, CIF MVP’s, led their team to 2 consecutive CIF championships and deep into state playoffs and have VB scholarships. Flip a coin.

  • Fight on

    @ Real talk
How do you figure Fischer was the best player on our team. First off he only had the one good game against Bonita and 2nd off Miller was “The Man” with the full ride to Oregon State. Fischer didn’t even get a “Football” scholarship. The kid deserves his props for doing well in his 1 track event, but to even mention his name alongside these other kids that excelled in multiple sports and events is an insult to their hard work and durability.

  • Bulldoggy

    @Real Talk

You’re right, that kid played HALF the football season. Best kid on the field, WOW! I bet that Miller kids’ dad would have something to say about that. I do remember the ONE time he was healthy enough to play West Co, he DEFINITELY wasn’t the best player on the field in that 41-10 loss.

  • Honorable mention – Schreimann – the dad

For an entire year Schreimann the dad has infuriated Aram on many ocoassions

No one has caused aram to go off like dad can do it , he has excelled in his event

when a team loses a leader it really shows up the next year, with no dad next year aram will be forced to enroll in the Widows Yoga Class due to boredom on the blogs

the man certainly has proven his ability, dad deserves at least an honorable mention

  • DRdad

Best athlete on the field! Yeah, the best athlete was out there. You’ll get a good look at him this year. Just move on already. We’re all tired of hearing that.

Oh please yes, get over it already. You’re like another Schreinman. Just get over itl

  • team sports is better

@team. Sports vs. Track & field

Yes, you hit it on the head. Track & field over basketball. That’s exactly why basketball & baseball players get paid more. Track is for the kids who get cut from the baseball team!

  • Uncle Buck

Female athlete of the year St. Lucy’s Shannon Kent. Helped lead her team to CIF semi’s and State in Soccer. She is an incredible outfielder batting .340 for St. Lucy’s Softball and probably could outrun anyone. I don’t know a better athlete than her and she has letters of intent in both sports at LMU. Playing in the Sierra League in both of those sports you are facing the best in the Valley/Area while succeeding on two high profile teams.

  • thomas c

    ATTA BABY HANNAH

  • DR Alum

someone else stirring up stuff on Fish. I know his dad he does mot talk his kid up like that, he would tell you str8 up little Gish wasn’t on the field enough to warrant any pats on the back. I do know he was offered D1 schollies though, Harvard was a choice and not the only one he had

my vote would go to horrine

  • Bulldoggy

Sounds like someone has program issues???

  • Bonita High School

Marissa Scott from Bonita High School: Overall does three sports: Cross Country,Soccer, and Track. As a freshmen she made it to state all by herself for cross country, as well as her sophomore year and her junior year took the team with her as captain, she was named runner of the valley this year for both Cross Country and Track and has recieved honors for both. She also holds records for many different events for her school and for invitationals she has attended. For instance she now recently holds the record for the mile at her school running a 4:58, and at league finals for both track and Cross Country she holds all the records for her events. In track she holds the 800, 1600, and 3200 records easily and in cross country has records set there as well. And although some will argue that track and cross country are the same any runner can tell you they are completely different. She has grown as an unexpectedly great runner to a record holder and should be recognized and awarded for her fine achievements.

    @RealTalk
Best athlete on the field by far huh? I went to my kids hudl account and saw the game film of the DB/DR game. Best athletes on the field by far were Katrib and Miller. That Fischer kid only made it to the third play of the second half before a bunch of soft players broke his collarbone. He may be a good player, but don’t try that best athlete on the field by far BS around here.
