The week ahead: All-Area and Football

We unveil the all-area teams this week. Baseball will run in Wednesday’s paper and Softball on Thursday. Boys Tennis will run on Friday, the same day as the Hall of Fame All-Star Football game at West Covina High School. Track and Swimming all-area teams will run on June 27 and 28, respectively. At least that’s the plan.

BTW, I’ve declared that Tijuana’s on San Bernardino Road/Azusa Ave, in Covina have the best taco’s in the San Gabriel Valley.

Damn Fred, it’s only 9:30 AM and that picture is going make lunch time seem like forever. I am going there for lunch, those look good!

  • apple

    Try Omana’s Tacos Fred

  • Amat Alumni and Parent

I am a Boca Del Rio fan on Hacienda in La Puente.

  • Fred Robledo

I guarantee Tijuana Tacos won’t disappoint…I’m also a big fan of Boca Del Rio, but the carne asada at Tijuana’s is unbelievable…

  • Fred Robledo

Boca Del Rio on Hacienda has been there forever, I remember going there in my late teens and 20s at 2 in the morning and it was still packed. They pour on everything, love their cheese and salsa.

  • Fred Robledo

Where is Omana’s Tacos? My new favorite place in West Covina to watch sporting events is Johnny Carino’s. If you haven’t been there the midweek happy hour prices are unbelievably good and the big screens are everywhere….

  • Dogtown

Dam Aram those tacos look good. Going today, thanks for the tip.

  • Fred Robledo

Don’t automatically assume when you see food it’s an Aram tip….. Those are my favorite tacos šŸ™‚

  • Amat Alumni and Parent

The carne asada is ok at Boca. It is not the best but it is all the crap they put in it that makes it so tasty. Cabbage, onions, cilantro, guacamole, cheese, and green salsa. Good stuff.

I also like the tacos at Taste of Texas on Citrus in Covina. That is some good meat.

  • Bulldogs have bite

Thanks a lot dude! Now I have to take an extended lunch break to get some of those tacos! Some of us have to work for a living you know!

  • Fred Robledo

You mean everyone is sitting in the office watching the Euro’s?

  • Dogtown

My bad Fred. You are right i do think Aram when you guys put food on here. Thanks for the tip.

Man how could you even think of FOOD, after all that Fathers day BAR-B-CUE FOOD… HAHAHA… Can barley put my uniform on for work. LOL…

  • CO Bro

Freddy, you got to try the taco truck parked in front of southeast concrete on arrow hwy! They make the tortillas onsite, tacos are legit!

  • 12th man

“Fonda Don Chon” off Citrus~ Bomb Food!!

  • Sgv baller

Boca del Rio is all about there green salsa and there extras.there meat is average.i like the carne asada at el paisanos en el monte,on peck near the 60. Used to be called California donuts.there burritos became so popular so they stopped selling donuts and changed name .ive have not found a good pastor taco .been the best places in All over the SoCal

  • Don Julio

Boca del Rio (I call it the Boca del pero) gives me the mean runs….try Rambo’s on Orange and Francisquito, it’s pretty good and it doesn’t give me Montezuma’s revenge! lol.

  • patrick

Geez, Boca is ok! But dang im getting the runs just reading all this! lmao

Is there any relation between Omana’s Taco and Henry Omana?

Seriously, where does Henry Omana play after high school? Heard someone noted he would play for UC-Riverside, is that true?

  • Sgv baller

Omanas tacos is Henry’s families business .

  • CoachesCorner

How about Orozcos Tacos off Soto in East Los Angeles

  • Sgv tacos

Taco Tapatio in azusa has by far best carne Asada in sgv and their chile verde is the bomb. There’s a reason they been in biz for 30 years. The owners son played at LP is an Allstate DT at citrus.

  • What does Aram think?

Dang Fred, I just ate, but could find room if I was close and they were open! Before I head there and bypass a chance of partaking in a BBC from Manny’s El loco, I want to know what Aram thinks! I know you have the home plate advantage over the big guy, but Aram is the food dude! Love how we can get into se food discussions and recommendations on this blog while debating valley sports superiority! After all, fat guys like me love sports and food!

  • I dunno, these types of tacos, what are they technically called “Tijuana style”??? — corn tortilla, asada, onion/cilantro and some sauce — are just about all the same to me. I mean the same if we’re talking the good places, you’re splitting hairs. Several taco trucks make tacos like this that are great. There’s a place on Lake Ave. just above the 210 that makes tacos like this and Miguel Melendez and I love them.

But, somebody did mention CHILE VERDE and now we’ve entered new territory.

On that note, the Fat Man with no Mexicano blood in him shall educate ALL of you. The best spot, BY FAR, that I have found for this is a hole-in-the-wall in San Gabriel called “El Pavo”. It’s on Walnut Grove, south of Las Tunas, but above Valley. It’s basically a bakery for pan dulce, but it also has a hot food section and the chile verde is absolutely out of this world good. Chile verde burrito from there should do you right for half a day.

Here’s a look at the chile verde plate. Now imagine that in a burrito. HEAVEN!

  • Taco Tapatio

Aram Please come in n have the chile verde wet burrito at our place in Azusa. You will not be disappointed. Bring Fred n have lunch on me, Ask for the owner. You will be very pleased.

  • I absolutely will. Fred and I would love it. Can’t do it now because I’ve actually made it a week on my diet, but should I break it or football season start, we will be there! Gracias!

  • Retired

Ahhhh what a taco!! Hottest Chili Ever!!

Thought they closed a few years back.

Please confirm as I would love to go over TODAY and have lunch if they’re still open!!

  • Tapatio Rules SGV

Tapatio rules the SGV. I’ve eaten Carne Asada Tacos from San Bernardino to L.A. and nobody has more tender Carne Asada than Tapatio.

  • Fred Robledo

I’ve seen Taco Tapatio, never stopped by but now have a reason too:) Aram will be there, he can’t resist once football starts. … Love the Taco Truck suggestions, been looking for one around Covina where I live. I’ve heard there is one on Azusa/Temple (I believe) in a gas station lot near Industry Hills, but haven’t stopped there yet.

  • Fred Robledo

Someone mentioned Manny’s, that’s my home-away-from home….I have too many good places WAY TOO CLOSE, Manny’s, Pepe’s, Tijuana’s, Boca Del Rio (Arrow Hwy), Juan Pollo, Dino’s (best chicken anywhere), etc, etc,

  • Bulldogs have bite

The Manny’s El Loco in West Covina used to be the home of the greatest of them all, TACO PACO! I know you graduated from Edgewood, so I know you must have remembered Taco Paco! I still get mad when I see the movie Goodburger on TV. Bought out good ‘ole Taco Paco for a Nickelodeon movie!

  • Dogtown

FRED Just had lunch at Tijuana’s Had the Asada tacos, and tried a sope, they were killer. The red salsa was the bomb.

  • Fred Robledo

I’m telling you, I don’t know what they marinate their carne asada in, but it’s fantastic.
