Breaking News: Damien looking for a Week 3 opponent after St. Bernard drops its football program

Damien coach Greg Gano was informed today that St. Bernard has dropped its football program, leaving a hole in the Spartans’ schedule on Sept. 14. The Spartans were set to host the Playa Del Rey team in Week 3, and is now looking for an opponent to fill the game or play a nine-game schedule.

Gano wasn’t sure why St. Bernard dropped the program, but the L.A. times reported earlier this month that coach Larry Muno resigned because the school wanted him to raise money to pay for his salary and coaching staff.

“I just can’t do it,” said Muno, who works as a full-time fire fighter. “I can’t afford it.”

St. Bernard competes in the Del Rey League, so cancelling the season will also leave a hole in the schedule for La Salle, Cantwell Sacred Heart and Bosco Tech.

St. Bernard was 10-1 in 2011.

so GG drops Amat, surely because he couldn’t beat them, his ego must have been crushed!I remember talking to the short, XXXL cocky coach shortly after his hiring, he tried to espouse his “greatness” I wasn’t buying and told him right then and there that he’d go winless against Amat, eventually dropping them , when will the power that be over at the fromer Bonita HS facility wise up? now Bernards drops football, KARMA is a real big time beatch!

  • Spartan 4 Life

Here’s another reason why we should of kept Amat on the schedule. Great Job Sam!!!

  • Don

Can someone tell me why Damien has St. Bernard on the schedule in the first place?

I mean, yeah, they are a private, but they have less than 200 boys on campus total and playing as well as they could ever hope to, wouldn’t be able to provide anything more than a sspeed bump for the Sparties.

    C’mon Greg.

  • Eric Davis – BHS’80

I suggest August 24 – Monrovia @ Damien. Let the open games vs. St. Bernard and Blair be the bye weeks. I’d pay to see that game!

  • Spartan 4 Life

    Great idea Eric,
But Damien’s scrimmaging Mater Dei on the 24th!!!

  • Bulldogs have bite

I think San Diego Powerhouse Helix is still looking for a game! Damien should give them a call!

  • White Fang

I hope St Bernards does not close doors like Mt Carmel,Pius X, St. John Vienny (not sure of spelling) Pomona Catholic when the school had boys, were my two uncles attended under Coah Framton.

  • Hard Times

Money was a problem for St Bernard, but the Santa Margarita program budgets $350k for its program. Come to think of it, where are those three former SM coaches, the ones who got caught growing all that garage marijuana? Put those guys on the staffs of St Bernard and Blair and the money would flow, allowing these teams to reach new ‘highs’.

  • Not a chance

    At Bulldog has bite
I think Helix is looking for a game on week one and their original opponent, Venice, is looking for a game for week zero. Very unlikely at this late date Damien will find someone looking for a game on the exact open date that they have from the canceled game with St Bernard. Looks like Damien will be working with a 9 game season this year. Hopefully they will make the playoffs and make up for that lost game.

  • Not Since 1995

    @Coach Gano

    Call Bishop Amat…!

How fun would it for you guys at the Sierra if Damien we’re to complete the Trifecta?

    I say…Do it! Do it…! Do it…!

  • Not So Fast My Friend

Tell Damien they should get in touch with Vebum Dei, they were looking for a game on Sept 15. Damien can move their game to Saturday. Just a thought.
