Girls Volleyball Rankings: What a surprise, St. Lucy’s is No. 1 chasing a third straight title in powerful Division 1-A

We’ll rank girls volleyball teams the best we can, but not everyone is participating with record updates on Maxpreps. I’ll post rankings each week and when matches are called in, I will post results on new blog threads so you can share scores and comments on games you were at. Coaches can phone in results to 626-962-8811, ext. 2233 or 2242 or send a small write-up to scores@sgvn.com, and leave a contact number in case we have questions. On Tuesday night, we’ll cover our first match, Los Altos at St. Lucy’s, 5:30 p.m. During the season if you want your score posted quickly and mentioned on the blog, tweet it to me at twitter@sgvtribpreps. I’ll be happy to share the result.

Above: St. Lucy’s 5-foot-9 senior outstide hitter Vanessa Caustrita (#5) is one of the big reasons St. Lucy’s is No. 1 again.

Tribune Girls Volleyball Rankings

1. St. Lucy’s (2-0) - Already a win over Bonita and Los Osos, the defending back-to-back 2AA champions are gunning for something tougher, a Division 1-A title, where they’re ranked third behind Laguna Beach and Thousand Oaks respectively. Once again, the Sierra will be tough, especially with Chino Hills and Ayala, but until someone knocks them off their perch, the Regents are No. 1. BTW, they host Los Altos Tuesday night at 5:30 p.m.

2. Chino Hills (4-1) – Off to another good start with a season-opening 3-2 win over Santiago and a tournament loss to Webb. They’re not as good as last year, but the program keeps them at No. 2

3. Ayala (1-0) - Arguably the third best in the Sierra with a season-opening 3-2 win over Glendora. Top three-ranked teams are from the Sierra, that should tell you enough.

4. Bonita (0-1) - Wouldn’t read to much into the Bearcats’ 3-0 loss to St. Lucy’s. If rankings mean anything, the Bearcats are still favored to win the Hacienda with the No. 9 ranking in Division 2-AA

5. Los Altos (0-0) – The Hacienda League pre-season favorites open the campaign at St. Lucy’s on Tuesday. Don’t judge much from that. Traditionally, the Conquerors are always an area team to contend with.

6. Northview (5-2) — Nice start for the Vikings with wins over Charter Oak, Duarte and Workman. With San Dimas losing its best player, will the Vikes take advantage in the Valle Vista?

7. Claremont (0-1) – The Wolfpack have been one of the better teams in recent years. They graduated a senior heavy team, but are still among the area’s best.

8. Bishop Amat (1-1) — The Lancers have improved and started with a win over San Gabriel Valley Mission, then were swept by ML King, ranked No. 8 in 2AA.

9. San Dimas (0-1) - The Saints are the preseason No. 1 in Division 3-A but lost to West Covina 3-2 in its season opener. One reason the Saints lost is that senior Yamani Wallace, the Saints’ best player, could be out the season with a knee injury.

10. Gladstone (5-1) – Had not surrendered a game before losing to Northview in its own Gladstone tournament. The Gladiators are once again the Montview League favorites, though La Puente will have a say.

    All you sports fanatics,

I realize that ladies volleyball can’t begin to compete with HIGH SCHOOL FOOTBALL but, for one that has been following the volleyball so far….I must request that coaches you need to step up to the plate and POST THE SCORES!

AMAT lady volleyball for one is going unnoticed. The following has taken place:

Aug 30th – Amat swept in three games, rather decisively,
Sept 4th – Amat swept San Gabriel Mission in 3 games.
Sept 6th – Amat swept La Habra in 3 games

On Friday Sept 7th the Los Osos Tourney Amat Lost to Citrus Hill in 3 close sets, and swept Cajon in 2 sets.

On Sat Amat lost th Mlk 21-25 and 22-25 and either game could have gone either way.
then Amat blew past Colony in 2 sets and Upland decisively in 2 sets.

There you have it, I figure 6 wins and 2 losses to date and a big win over Bonita in three sets the valley #4 team to start the season

  • My 2 cents

    Rankings should be…
    1. St Lucys – No one is close…

    3. Chino Hills – Good Start
    3. Claremont – Lots of talent
    5. Ayala – another Sierra league team
    6. Amat – see comments from previous poster
    7. Los Altos – I guess
    8. South Hills – Good coach, winning reputation
    9. West Covina – Big win over San Dimas
    10. Bonita – not much left from prev successes

Lets see if Fred writes about anybody in volleyball other than St Lucys, Chino Hills or Amat football?
Sierra league has the best 4 teams in valley period!

Cents, I’d agree with your rankings over Big Fred’s. Amat easily handled BONITA. I don’t know about WC we will soon see if that win over SD was a true indication of them. Even after their loss, I still like SD and they have a big game against the Lady Bearcats today that should tell us just how far either of the teams should fall. I want to see how L.A. fairs against the mighty SL but think they will win the Hacienda. And Yes, the Sierra is LOADED, but I just don’t think SL will be challenged enough during the season, to see the type of teams they will see in the playoffs.

    My Two Cents

Of course we’ll cover more than St. Lucy’s, and you and anyone can help by suggesting matches to cover a few days in advance. If there are human interest stories of players, share it with me. I’ve got a twitter, email, just shoot me a message. Those of you in the volleyball community know which games are the big games. I do the best I can, but it’s always nice to be tipped off. Parents or fans can help by simply twittering final results to me @sgvtribpreps

    Fred, Fred, Fred……..
Please don’t feel like you have to defend yourself and dignify every comment with a response. There are some 30 teams in the area and no matter what you do, some one is not going to like it.
This is about the athletes-not their parents, many who are living out their failed athletic careers through their children.
You do a great job with the resources you have.
    Keep up the Excellent Work.

    Fred,

I’m just happy that you provide a forum for us to hear about teams and discuss our OPINIONS.

So THANK YOU, because you also go beyond that and try to give us a little info. I’m also thankful that you did not use the pix of the parents fighting at the Bonita SD game a few years back…EMBARRASING. Having said that, it’s still Bonita SD and it should be fun.

  • Heads up

At the risk of you making you look biased Fred, please say you will cover next Wednesday’s HUGE SGV Showdown between St. Lucy’s & La Salle. The rematch of last year’s CIF 2-AA Championship will be hosted by the Regents and should be standing room only! Btw, no football to conflict with on Wednesday! See you there!

    Fred,
A big match this coming Monday with St. Lucy’s and Rancho Cucamonga. Rancho Cucamonga is coming off an upset victory of Redlands East Valley and is 2-0 on the season.
