Amat without Andrews, possibly Blue for St. Paul

I don’t know if Amat will revoke my credential and give me the Lane Kiffin treatment for reporting this, but Dionza Blue was in a sling following Friday’s 30-14 win at Amat, an injury that will be re-evaluated on Monday to determine if he can play against St. Paul on Friday. The Lancers already will be without all-purpose threat Darren Andrews, who was ejected and must sit-out the St. Paul game.

  • St Paul is a joke

St Paul is horrible, Amat can beat them with their JV Team.

  • http://msn.com PREP SPORTS

SP will have a chance to beat the Scum if they play their sophmore qb and pass the ball around..
The Scum have just too much SWAG.

No need to rush him back seeing how league in not too far away. Amat has enough talent to deal with this, at least with the pre-league games they have left.

The road just got a little tougher for Amat. So much blogging going on about this game that some of you may have missed it… Damon Riggins a running back from Oaks Christian just transferred to Crespi and will be immediately eligible to play.

  • Valley athletics

@scmc . Riggins only lasted 3 days at crespi and returned to oaks before Fridays game . Where he played against chaminade . According to the times it was a financial problem and it got worked out .

  • Steve Ramirez

Good one Fred. But speaking from someone who has been banned from the Amat sideline, that only happens when you make too much of a Amat loss to an area team (Damien, 2002). :)

  • Fred Robledo

That’s right, Stevie Ramirez wasn’t Amat’s favorite back in the day, I’ve heard all the stories, lol … He apparently once wrote a column that Los Altos, not Amat, should have been the SGV representative to take on power Concord De La Salle years ago. Amat didn’t like that. Good for you Stevie, hold firm.

We love our haters. Don’t hate on us because we r good. Best team in the SGV

Let’s not take SP too lightly, you know the SP faithful will come in force…I heard their pump for this game…we need to stop Scoby!!! Should be a physical game to say the least.

  • AMAT DOGS! NOT SCUM! LOL!

    @ PREP SPORTS

Traditionally, Amat fans refer to St. Paul as “The Slime.” I don’t know if this is true or not but the story goes that St. Paul high was built on a landfill in the 1960s…hence, Slime.

And St. Paul fans refer to Amat as “The Dogs” for a reason I don’t know why.

They are not the most creative nicknames but then again…this was the 1960s.

  • Truth That!

Having Blue and Andrews, the game will be over after the first quarter. Without them, it will be Amat 28-0 instead of 42-0 by halftime. St. Paul, you can’t win with a 5’8″ DT as the star of your DL who is dumb as a bag of rocks.

  • scmc

Valley athletics, thanks, I just caught that on some high school football radio show while on my way home from the UCLA blowout win (was sort of hoping for Houston to make a game of it). We haven’t heard the end of the this new transfer policy.

  • SGV Football Fan

Just saying, Scoby was in the CO stands Friday night. For obvious reasons of course, since he will be playing Amat next week.

  • Amat Dad

THERE WAS ABOUT 10-15 SP PLAYERS AT THE GAME, PEOPLE THINK THAT THIS IS GOING TO BE A EASY VICTORY AND ITS NOT. THEY MOVE THE BALL AT WILL AGAINST LM, IT WAS THEIR SPECIAL TEAM THAT DID THEM IN, IM SURE THEY CORRECTED THAT PROBLEM, IF THEY WERE TO PLAY AGAIN I THINK SP WOULD WIN,MD GAME WAS CLOSER THAN THE SCORE SHOWS, IF YOU SAW THE GAME ON WARNER YOU WOULD KNOW A COUPLE TD ‘S WERE CALLED BACK AND 2 OF SP STARTERS DIDN’T PLAY THAT NIGHT…IM JUST SAYING WE SHOULDN’T TAKE THIS GAME TO LIGHTLY, THATS ALL.

  • Amat Grad & Dad

The Slime always steps it up against Amat, our coaches know that (most are alumni). Men in blue- listen to your coaches, this an old rivalry the Slime will stop at nothing to beat us Dawgs! Work hard all week and do not play into their games. Keep your cool and AMAT WILL SHINE!

To Steve Ramirez, I had no idea Fred was banned from BA’s sidelines. Who imposed the ban!
To ‘Amat grad’ & ‘Dad, Amat Dawg not Slime,’ I have no clue what you people are talking about! We have never been called ‘Dawgs’ like in Bull Dogs from Garfield (many Parents have their kids at Amat)nor calling SP as slime! I’m glad you brought this up. Who or when this started is beyound me! The crowd at Amat has chamged over the years. Blankets being placed on seats so the early Alumni can not find a place to sit, Because Grandma, Grandpa, Aunt, Uncle,Mom, Dad, son, daughter, cousin, friend will arrive late to watch Vanessa, cheer on the track. When they arrive, everyone begins hugging and kissing one another so the spectators can not watch the game.Drinking on campus by parents before the game this has changed!Amat students could not chew gum on campus grounds! There was a great rivalary between Amat & SP for many good years, until enrollment began to decline at SP. ‘Slime’, ‘Scum’, ‘Dawgs, never’Bishop Amat Lancers YES! Please do not attempt to change our tradition.Do you remember when BA played their home games at the Covina District Field?

  • one game at a time

St. Paul was and has always been referred as the “Slime” since the old days. Amat was called Dogs or Dawgs as our nickname. And Amat is Amat Family not Amat Nation! So keep the old Amat tradition going!

Don’t underestimate the Slime, they are dirtier than CO.

    Beat the Slime!

What a great weekend this was. Started it off by hanging out with all of my Amat buddies at the game including, TC Bruin, Tom, and all the old Timers Friday night. To make it an even better, a good old fashioned butt wuppin over Charter Oak by my Lancers, followed by a USC, loss to stanford
    Couldn’t be a better weekend !!
BTW. TC, lost in Vegas :(

  • Roni

Assante has SP playing a more disciplined game. They play under control and keep their cool. Assante does not put up with any BS. Two starters did not suit up against LH for missing practice.Don’t underestimate them, because their playing better and finally get Assante’s system.

I don”t think a lot of AMAT fans know that magnitude of loosing Andrews for a game and to had insult to injury possibly Blue. Without Andrews in the second half of the game on friday, AMAT was beyond predictable and looked like an average offensive team at best. All CO had to do was load up that box and problem solved, AMAT didn’t score for the rest of the half. Haynes wasn’t able to facilitate the ball without that deep threat in Andrews which opens up the rest of the AMAT offense.. One would think that after that reading all these post and comments on here about how he’s got that “IT” factor he would be able to do so but I guess not .I will say that the Refs were on there knees for most of that game blowing calls left and right that could of resulted in a score or two. BUT what separates those championship caliber teams from average teams, is the ability to get over those calls quickly despite having to battle the opposing team and the refs. So to make a long story short you guys are gonna have your backs pretty damn close to the wall without Andrews for this upcoming Friday, and without Blue im pretty sure you can figure out what i think about that. Also FOOD FOR THOUGHT AMAT FANS, when you guys linger on the blown calls and keep on booing the refs for extended periods of times. All that does is keep that last blown calls in your players head and has got them thinking “what if”. If you talk to any athlete whether it be professional or an high school athlete, they will be the first to tell you that in order to succeed in this game or any sport for that matter you have to have a short term memory when it comes to mistakes made by themselves or unfortunately sometimes the officials ,These are high school KIDS you are cheering on and not million dollar athletes.

  • jcaz

After all this trash talking for all these years, im glad were finally moving on.

You know, I seem to remember that I once asked Fred in here if he would ever bet the mortgage on his house in a game featuring Amat and Charter oak. Well, I guess that answers that question eh ? Anyways, like I said, moving on….

Next weeks SP game should be interesting. But even if it is something of a rivalry game, I personally believe that the hardest part of Amats non league schedule is way way in Amats the rear view mirror.

Those first four games were brutal for the Lancers. Make no mistake about it, but for Amt to walk away undefeated after playing what was perhaps the most difficult non league games in several years was remarkable.

I hate to admit it, but Aram was right when he wrote that piece on his blog. Those victories were huge ! Wow, I mean everyone in here was thinking that Amat was going to lose to Servite and many of the pundants were even saying that Amat was going to lose a few, if not all of those games to the local teams even after Amat spanked Servite.

I for one found it so surprising if only because after a Lancer victory, all you herd in here was all about how the other teams Amat faced were gong to be the rest of the year. That those losers were somehow down this year but NEVER did anyone give credit to the fact that Aamt beat the hell out of some very good football teams.

It was always, “Well, let see how the losers do the rest of the year. That should give us an idea of just how good or bad Amat really is,”

Well seems to me that no one in here is saying that about Charter Oak ?

    Why not ??

Anyway, like I said earlier, Amats moving on folks…..

BTW Fred, glad your keeping your house….LOL

  • SGVFan98

This is a great opportunity… I totally agree with Jcaz about the no credit.. One thing Amat has as well as lot of the other PAC 5 schools is the ability to reload… Sometimes all it takes is a week.. Amat has had a pretty decent freshman and JV team the last few years.. This years freshman teams looks legit.. I saw film of them against Servite.. back to the point though.. Andrews #7 and Blue #2 goes down.. someone will step up.. and what better time than against a rival in St Paul.. I’d rather have this happen versus St. Paul rather than the programs Amat faces in the Serra.. Koa #4 kind of reminds me of a smaller version of Alemany’s QB from 2010, Vernon Adams. He has game breaker ability.. can’t wait to see him as an even more confident senior with those successful underclassmen from this year..

Amat Dad & grad, The only part of your statement I tend to agree is, this game with Saint Paul will be tough,if Blue does not play. I do know who you are or when you attended. Coming back to Saint Paul. Do you remember Paul Wargo from Saint Paul? If you don’t,give a call to their school and they will tell you. He was very tough to bring down! Have you ever heard of Coach Framton? He coached (football) my two Uncles at Pomona Catholic. He then coached at B.Amat. I have a picture of Coach Framton on the football field with Father Kiefer(he was a father back then) and my Father who played football for El Monte.Does Coach Cantwell ring a bell? This Slime business that you speak of,must have started way later when you attended! Our coaches never resorted to calling St.Paul slime, they had too much class! They are and will remain the Swordsmen! Do you remember the cows behind the visitors bleachers? Maybe you are thinking of Cathedral that was built on a cemetary?? Where do you suspose the school logo comes from?
Well young man, I remember when there was no senior class. When my uncle and I would arrive early for football practice before school began,we would catch a short nap sitting in the stalls, where the stidents lockers were goung to be placed. When my parents took me to a Bishop Amat Fiesta, before my Freshman class, the homes accross the street were still being built.I don’t want to brag( I hear parents bragging about their kids attending B. Amat)But,here goes, we have had fifteen members of our family attend Bishop Amat, starting in 1961 through 1984!

    Black tooth,
That is some awesome history your family has at Amat. We have that in common but we are from different eras. We have had 9 Lancers graduate and are still going strong. I meant no disrespect but the Amat that I know (since 75 ) does call SP the slime and they do refer to us as the Dawgs. I guess we forget how many generations our Amat Family has. SP has been known to go to many lengths to get that W against our Lancers. Come Friday night they will step it up. Our boys will be ready and AMAT WILL SHINE! Thanks for the history lesson!

    Black Tooth,

Maybe you’re misremembering (to use a Roger Clemens phrase) They say the mind is the 2nd thing to go. I forget the 1st :-)

There have been St Paul “Slime” references since its opening. It was built next to a toxic dump and the stench was often unbearable. The dump was closed in the mid ’60s, but of course BKK has been closed a while but the area was still under speculation for years. Here’s an article that mentions it, and notice who the “Slime” principal was at the time.
    http://articles.latimes.com/1985-01-27/news/hl-10054_1_city-water

Prior to the Hagerty era, no matter which team is better it was a barn burner. Even during some of Amat’s darkest times, in a year St Paul was the Western Division champ and we only had 3 wins…one of those 3 was against St Paul. If anyone remembers, the Lancers had some significant injuries that night too.

Even if the opponent is not, the rivalry is one that must be respected. It was named by Sports Illustrated as one of the top 10 HS rivalries of all-time. Records go out the window. The Lancers must prepare as such – and I think they will.

  • Joe Amat

    Amat Grad and Dad,

And around your era, didn’t the Slime take a hiatus and they became the St Paul “Spies”?

Even though asst coach Dick Bruich kinda took the fall for filming Pioneer from the Denny’s parking lot before a playoff game (leading the Slime to forfeit the 1st round win) we all know nothing happened there without Ancich knowing.

Add the hiring of Assante with some of their recent foray into the recruiting realm and it doesn’t take a lot to see why they are not exactly the most respected program around

  • Slime Repellant

@Roni-Tells you more about the players than the coach. What kind of player misses practice anyway? And what kind of coach would he be if he just let it go?
@Black Tooth-Nice history lesson, Amat blood runs deep! However, as far back as I can remember (only an 80′s Alum), st.paul has and always will be…THE SLIME!!!
@SGVfan1998-I was a little concerned about our offenses (Koa’s) lack of ability to ANYTHING after halftime against c.o.??? And that was WITH Blue still playing! Speaking of which, unless that arm is broken, shake it off and get in the mix! This is Amat vs. st. paul…..you don’t miss this game for anything (unless you do something stupid like retaliate after taking a shove to the chest).
Long story short….Amat better ice down, prepare and gear up for Friday night because this SHOULD BE a good one. However, maybe Assante and the rest of his new band of freshly recruited Slime have NO CLUE or attachment to or about this rivalry and that works well into AMAT’s favor in the long run because Amat is coming out to make a statement for years and players gone by! AMAT players play for their school BISHOP AMAT and the AMAT TRADITION rather than themselves AND because of that….AMAT will shine!

As a side note* Anybody know if we have any cornerbacks in the “chamber” over at AMAT? We will need to reload that position this week and quick!

  • AMAT 73

Big week as we go up against the slime . Glad this game is back on the schedule as this should be a yearly contest . The game is always a hard hitting test for each team . I hope the Whittier blog is fuctional this week and if not I just hope those slimesmen are talking as much crap as they did before preseason started on Aram’s blog . Hopefully we get over the injuries and if Blue is unable to play we have some very qualified back ups who will have their chance to shine and especially against the dreaded slime .
    Black tooth,
As fas as I can remember and that goes back to 1969 which was not long after your days I recall the SP always being the slime and that cow pasture of a field , just that a cow pasture and you know the reason behind that . Remember all those little quonset huts down on Los Nietos and Greenwood , well those were the cause of the slime . Something to do with WWII ammunition or rocket fuel but that’s what causes the filed to glow on soem nights , all that toxic waste , hence the SLIME . Since you are a real oldtimer did you know our original colors were to be red and white but Mgsr Keifer change them to Blue and Gold as those were the colors of Mary by the Sea , the school he came from before the opening of AMAT .

  • La Mirada guy

Don’t know anything about the “slime or Dawgs” comments, but i am calling for St Paul to win this game. I know it doesn’t make sense. But without Andrews and possibly Blue, and St Paul getting 2 weeks to prepare for this game??? St Paul is better than the record shows, and it will be a close game.

Look St. Paul does not beat Amat at Keifer or at their Slime Pit. Remember what happen a few years ago with Coach Hagerty and QB McClananhan when we went into that slime pit of theirs and whacked them handedly….very embarassing for them. Even in 2006 and in 2007 when we were not at our best and had a 3 win season we beat them in Keifer. Now the game went overtime and should have been won in regulation all we had to do was put a field goal through the uprights but Coach Verti went for the touchdown 4th down and seconds on the clock. We got stopped and went into overtime some of our starters got hurt in the overtime including Marcus Wagner. That Chalk Talk the following week was intense as Coach Verti was being bombarded with questions about that decision. Amat still pulled it out in overtime. A game St. Paul should have won but of course they are cursed when playing Amat. Amat 38 St. Slime 20.

  • Libero fo the year!

my first recollection of the Amat/St.Paul battles dates to November 68, our first year in league with St.Pul,Mater Dei and Servite. Ancich had been squawking all season about us and our pumpkin schedule of years past. The field was inundated with water, it had rained all week long and Coach Phil had some half baked idea of drying it out with sawdust! They had it trucked in and shoveled from 20 to 20 yardlines, between the hashmarks.Ancich went ballistic at first sight of the mess. This was a must win for Amat, we had already lost to Mater Dei and theseason would end without a win(in the 60s you were lucky to be a 2nd place team and make the playoffs. The game ended in a hard fought tie at 13…walking off the field Coach Cantwell, was boasting to any and all that they(CIF office) had to take us! BTW Haden did not play QB that night, I beleive it was the late Bob Phillipe…..Joe Amat, can you verify the QB for that night?

  • The Libero

Freddie, this is the same Bob Phillips who was the Tribs soccer coach of the year, while coaching his girls at Bonita in the late 90s, while never playing the game himself! Through osmosis(2 daughters playing club)and hard work, I believe his teams had a 9 or 10 year league match unbeaten streak. He was a very accomplished HS baseball pitcher too, along with a successful businessman, Baja Bobbys in Rancho Cucamonga and another eatery in Dana Point.Bob was a great guy and dies way too young! My only other guess as to who was the QB that night in November 68 is Phil Convertino, another great athlete, he went on to play at USC , any old timers recall this sawdust game?

  • 12th man

Trust that Fred will no longer post any injury reports regarding Bishop Amat or any Stats for that matter…Some things are better left unsaid~

Bob phillipe did quarterback that night, Pat Haden was only a sophomore and split duties with Bob and this night because Bob was a better runner played most of the evening.

St. Paul tied Amat on their last drive, no overtime the game ended 14 all.

Amat ended their season 7-1-1 and did not make the playoffs.

St. Paul went on to share the C. I. F. title that year with “THE RANCH” in the days parlaynce, from Pico Rivera

  • The Libero

sawdust man, Haden did not play because he was injured and as far as being a better runner that was no contest, Bob Phillipe was not even close to Patrick as a runner nor a passer either, however, after not playing FB as a JR, Bob did a very creditable job as his replacement, and it did end in a 13-13 tie, check the yearbooks from both schools, last add, Haden was hurt against La Puente HS in the last non-league game of the season

Libero…..Dale Duncun( Duncan was a beast of a middle linebacker) was the La Puente Warrior that slowed Pat that year….knocked his unconscious in the LP game….

Pat pat the remainder of the year slitting time with Bob….

and being there seeing the scoreboard read 14 to 14 when the lights went out!

Pat played the remainder of the year spitting time with Bob….
