Rock-solid defense and another long punt return for a touchdown by Mike Peters sparked the Covina High School football team to a 35-0 win over Baldwin Park on Thursday night at Covina District Field.

The Colts (5-2,2-1) scored first on a 6-yard touchdown run by Shazeb Mallick capping a seven-play, 74-yard drive with 3:59 left in the first quarter.

Mallick carried the ball 14 times for 79 yards and two touchdowns.

Gladstone pulls away in second half to remain unbeaten

Unbeaten Gladstone High School started slow but got its act together to beat Bassett 44-22 on Thursday night in a Montview League football game at Citrus College.

The Olympians’ defense started the game strong as it forced the Gladiators into intentionally grounding the ball in the end zone, resulting in a safety.

After the ensuing free kick, Bassett quarterback Nicolas Colmenero hit Jamel Greenfield on a 13-yard touchdown pass to extend the lead to 9-0.

The Gladiators’ offense didn’t take long to respond as it took three plays to drive 65 yards, scoring on a 55-yard pass from Kevin Amezquita to Sergio Torres.

  • Gladstone, thanks to Amezquita, has zoomed to a 3-0 start and will be looking for more when it visits La Puente on Friday in a battle of two teams with designs on knocking Azusa from its perch atop the Montview League. Kickoff is 7 p.m.

Colt 74…Congrats, Boy was I wrong…Your colts are gel-ing at the right time. 35-0. If you can upset San Dimas… at 8-2 you would be in first place, If you lose it’s 7-3 and 3rd place. Hey we may actually play each other again. Well good luck on the rest of the year.

Doing the chains at all the Colts home games has it’s advantages and it’s disadvantages.

It’s the best seat in the house for up close and personal.
You get to see, hear, and feel what the other team is thinking.
You get to see Stretton open all night and beating his man, again and again, only to not be thrown to, and when they did it was 6 feet over his head or at his feet.
You get to see the number of dive plays that are run in a row…for zero gain.
You get to see a screen pass that to a receiver 6 feet away only go 3 feet and bounce on the ground…..

Truth is, the Colts right now are doing better than I even imagined in my wildest dreams. They have some good kids that are scrappers.
I would LOVE to be able to replay the El Monte and the Northview games, and if we get into the playoffs, hope we see again..IF NOTHING ELSE!

Peters on punt returns is a thing of beauty. Wait for it..wait for it…got it…SEE YA!

The O-line gives the QB time. Blocks for the ground attack.
The defensive line….I would not want to be holding the ball and piss them off…LOL!

I had flashbacks of El Monte with the two 15 yard penalties in a row. Make teams work for it..don’t let refs get involved.
And speaking of refs..I will never understand the discrepancies of to where I ( standing right next to the ref ) and the ref himself sees the spot for the ball placements ?????? And another thing..when everyone in the stand knows it’s 4th down, and the 3 other refs know it’s 4th down,..don’t one teams coach talk you into it only being 3rd down, and changing the box to reflect that!

One last thing. When the receiver is 5’6″, and the defender is 6’2″…..and they jump for the ball in the corner of the end zone,…my money is on the 6’2″ guy……

    Just saying….

    Good job COLTS!
    TY Greenie!

Two more things that raised my eyebrows last night.

    1. The band, flag team, and Cheerleaders out numbered parents/fans/students 2:1. Sad.
    2. Comfortable lead. 2nd and 3rd teams no wheres to be seen except on the sidelines. The last 3 minutes of a game with a running clock should not be the only reason these other kids that are busting their butts all week should get into a game.

My 2 cents and as always your mileage may vary.

    Any Duarte fan,

After watching you beat a depleted Workman team tonight, I am not impressed. Where’s Duroc? I thought you said the front 7 is too strong?? After seeing tonights game, all they do is stand straight up and wait. Won’t work against GStone. Hope you enjoy this “win”.
