Sharing Colt 74s throughts on Covina’s season; Colts take on San Dimas for VVL title

From Colt 74
Nobody at the beginning of this season expected much out of the Covina Colts. Especially after the Colts leading rusher and standout GeVontray Ainsworth decided to transfer to Monrovia for his senior year.

Nobody of coarse except for the Colt coaches and players that is.

After a shaky spring session, and a less than stellar opening preseason game against last years Div 7 CIF Champions the West Covina Bulldogs, which ended on television with a 34-0 shellacking, the Colts did what they needed to do.

They got mad and regrouped.

Coach Joe Brown found his regrouping in senior quarterback Emilio Zertuche ( If that last name sounds familiar think of 1990’s Bishop Amat standout quarterback Zach Zertuche ), running backs Frankie Ramirez, and Darren Torres, along with receivers Christian Padilla, Michael Peters, and Evan Stetton. With this new regrouping the Colt offense has averaged 28.4 points per game.

On the defensive side of the field they put Justin Turner, Kingston Maae, Anthony Urrea, Torris Williams, Rodolfo Alvarez, and last but not least Alberto Naranjo. This defensive manning has resulted in the Colts holding their opponents to an average 19.3 points per game.

An interesting note is that the Colts losses (including the West Covina game ) have been to teams with a combined record of 27-7 .

This season was written off as a rebuilding year by all outside of the Colts themselves. Early predictions from the pundits were at best winning 2 games this season. All onlookers basically gave the Colts the same chances of having a winning season as building the Brooklyn Bridge with a toy erector set.

With great pride this seasons Colts have proven the pundits wrong. Going into Fridays last league game against the Pomona Red Devils the Colts are 6-3 and are looking forward to entering the playoffs the following week.

As a reminder, this last league game is Senior Night for the Colts. Any parents wishing to have photos taken with their seniors are reminded to be at Covina District Field NO LATER THAN 4:45 PM.
