Bishop Amat LB Sal Velasquez will likely not play against Long Beach Poly after suffering concussion in last week’s loss to Notre Dame

No Sal Velasquez could spell “Trouble”!! This kid is the rock of the Amat defense!! He controls the ground game & apply’s the pressure when needed! I know Football is A team sport but without this kid in the game the LBP game could be a toss-up..Long Beach Poly will average 7 yds a carry with no Velasquez opposed to 3 to 5 yds with him playing..This mite be a good time to promote a freshman or someone from JV to step up & make a name for himself! It’s apparent from last week’s game that Amat currently doesn’t have anyone to fill Velasquez’s shoes!!…Fred if Amat wins are you still taking them over Mission Viejo even without Velasquez? Or does the upset look more improbable ?

    • 12th man

Fred you’re using the word “likely” so does this mean it will be a game time decision? Or is the word being used to offset Long Beach Poly?

      • GrimReaper

If it is a concussion, then likely means.. Not going to play.

    • fb101

      12th Man,
IF there was a frosh or JV player who could actually be playing and CONTRIBUTING on Amat’s varsity, don’t you think the coaching staff would have them on varsity already?

      • 12th man

At this point you have nothing to lose! Didn’t you watch the game last week where the Amat defense was non existent!! There was nobody in the middle to stop the run!! & to answer your question..Sometimes players become better & excel throughout the season & mite have gotten over looked at the start..~ How else would you explain these other players stepping up & playing for their respective teams in the playoffs? Alemany & ND are doing it!! So yeah! It happens..& it’s possible Amat could do the same with all the injuries they have not to mention it would give them more depth at that position..

        • fb101

I have seen EVERY game this season. Sal V. going down did not help at all. Give SOME credit to ND. They have talent. Played Alemany closer than Amat did.
With a week to prepare I am confident Amat’s coaching staff will find someone on the team to step up and soften the blow.

Players DO become better as the season goes along, BUT IF any player had VARSITY level TALENT, they’d be on Varsity already.

  • Greenie

This is why I am taking LB Poly …During the beginning of the year when BA is healthy they are rolling. Due the lack of Size and “quality” depth, not just bodies, the lancers are banged up at this time of the year. Last year they had key players injured or probable, or questionable for the most important game of the year. So when the question was ask “Is Bishop” a steadfast in the pac 5…you have to consider these types of issues. Every team has injuries, but the top pac 5 teams have guys that can step in and play at the same level. I don’t care what anyone says this could be the injury that seals BA;s Fate, Sal was being considered for def player of the year. With out SAL BA won’t win. The BA Defense is already struggling, this would almost put them at a huge disadvantage. Even if he plays….one big hit, and he would be done for this week and next week…This is not bad luck, this has been the norm come playoff time in La Puente, CA.

    • warrior fan

Im no amat fan what so ever but even with their best defender there is no way IMO LBpoly beats Amat. Poly is just to weak this year

      • 12th man

Don’t be so sure!! Amat is a 10 point favorite but with no Velasquez playing i expect LBP to control the time of possession & keep the Amat offense off the field to neutralize them..I have the score 31-28 either way~

        • fb101

10 point favorite? Where do you get THAT nonsense?

          • 12th man

Calpreps has the Score Amat-34 LBP-24
When the score is more than 10 points Calpreps is about 89% accurate!

          • fb101

Calpreps/Maxpreps are computer generated DRIVEL. They operate in a vacuum. Did they figure in that Sal V is out of the game? NO…….That alone skews ANY prediction……

          • 12th man

While the computer can’t calculate Injuries or momentum it does calculate opponent strength & strength of Schedule..I posted the Calprep projections & scores there..You’re going to surprised on how close to being accurate this computer formulates..Like I said..Whenever Calpreps predicts one team over another by at least 10 points or more it’s usually money!!! Close to 90% accurate the whole season~

    • jcaz

You sound a lot like Aram….hum….

  • warrior fan

IMO Poly just dont have enough offense to beat Amat. The LBpoly coach is stuck in his same ritual old school offense and it is proving that its time to move on just check out how Amat has changed their game plan which by the way is the reason why Amat was kind of good this year. Poly just dont know how to use all their athelets just like USC, Amat wins this game sort of easy but come second round its good night La Puente by the half.

    • Jefe

I’d say Lara is gone if they can’t beat Amat.

      • Greenie

I agree, Poly is the most storied program in the pac 5. A lost to a At large team should be the final straw.

      • warrior fan

I think Lara should had been gone that old school style has ran its course.

    • jcaz

Actually im going to agree with you on a couple of points here starting with the fact that Amat win this Friday night, and that the Serra (possibly) loses one team the following week.
But it will most likely be Alemany and not Amat who ends up getting beat.

Frankly speaking, a home game for the Lancers against ANYONE including Mission Viejo means that we have an excellent chance at winning. BTW, I see Notre Dame going far this year and if Alemany does in fact get past the second round, then the Serra league should be very well represented in these playoffs this year.
Good luck to all the Serra league teams, its time to root for one another and not be such homers dude.

      • You play the game to win

You must be completely delusional if you think any team from the Serra is making it to the Semi’s. Both Amat and ND go down this week, which is sad considering how awful LBPoly is playing this year, while Alemany cruses threw their 1st round game vs a 3rd place Marmonte team before getting blasted in the 2nd round. All in all the Serra goes 1-3 this year to make the league record over the 2 year period a stellar 1-6. Oh, and by the way, how did that home field advantage work for you last time you played a home game in the playoffs vs. a 3rd place Tesoro? When are you Amat blowhards going to learn that you are not at the same level as the top teams in the Trinity, Marmonte, and Southcoast?

        • jcaz

Your joking right ? look every team in the PAC5 playoffs is not only good, they are darn good. So when you some how try to downgrade a third place Tessoro team, dont forget to mention that these guys were the same team defeated the Long Beach Poly wabbits the year before that, and if im not mistaken Tessoro took down Servite last year, and, has done a pretty good job in the playoffs by considerately beating up on the “all powerful” trinity league.
BTW, just cause a team plays in certain league, it doesnt make them any better or worse than any other team in these playoffs, because in the end, no matter how good you are, there can only be one right ?
Oh, if memory serves me correctly, Amat has already beaten OLU, Mater Dai and Servite over the last few years (not to mention St Bonnies), so whats your point again ?

        • warrior fan

Are you kidding me ND will win this friday so will Amat and we all know Alemany will its almost a given, but for you to disrespect the Serra league when just two years ago Alemany alone went to the semi-finals in their first year in the pac5 give me a break respect the Serra league the trinity is good but i think the Serra is better.

      • warrior fan

Funny but IMO not likely Mater Dei has no clue whats coming after them next week this week game first though we will take it easy on moorepark then go in and destroy mater Dei watch and see. But i couldnt care if Amat played MV at home with Mv sitting Redfield out Amat still loses 9 out of 10 times.

  • 12th man

Amat’s O-line will be the deciding factor & on how well they do!! With no defense & no Sal Velasquez Amat’s team has been put in a position where they’re going to have to outscore their opponents in a good old fashioned shoot-out!! There’s only one problem..Koa Haynes has been a slow work in progress & although he did look exceptionally well during pre-season & non league..The Serra league has been brutal & has made Haynes look like a real rookie at times..The young QB seems to panic & be indecisive when being heavily rushed..The young maturity level is starting to show in his decision making when he’s dropping back in the pocket & he can’t find anyone open..He seems lost at times & holds on to the ball to long..He will definitely need that mental clock working vs LBP..In order for Amat to win Koa will have to convert everything inside the red-zone into TD’s instead of FG’s..He absolutely can’t afford any sacks inside the red- & he can’t panic & try to thread the needle where he’s been having problems lately..He need’s to roll-out make sure he’s not in the pocket anymore & “throw the ball away” live for another down without losing yardage or possession of the ball~

    • fb101

Have you gotten this stellar strategy to Hag’s and the rest of the staff?

      • 12th man

Everyone knows it’s a team effort…But certain individuals are key components (play makers) or (game changers) if you will..I’m not saying you can’t win without them it just makes it more challenging..Just ask Santa Margarita!

      • 12th man

I have not ran it by the Coaches yet…Apparently I’m being told it needs to be cleared by you 1st “COACH’!!

    • SGV_Football_Fan

      @12th man

Anyone who has gone to the Amat games knows that you are trying to get some playing time for your son, nephew, or friends kid. Save your breath, the Amat coaches play the best players. Amat has not been beat by a run up the middle this entire season. It could happen, but it hasn’t yet.
They tied Chino Hills because they only rushed 3 lineman and got picked apart by Simko. They lost to Alemany because they rushed only 3 lineman and got picked apart by the QB…not to mention the 2 DB’s who fell down in coverage and gave up TD’s. Any they lost to ND because of the 4 turnovers on offense that eliminated points for Amat and added points to ND.
If your mijo wants some playing time, he will have to compete and earn it at Amat. There are no gimmes or my Daddy complained to the coach and got me some playing time situations at Amat. You might as well tell your mijo to get in the weight room and work hard to try to earn some playing time because it won’t happen any other way.
The coaches couldn’t care less about what you think. They always have and will continue to put their best players on the field in every situation. Unfortunately, at the moment your mijo isn’t one of them.

      • Valley Athletics

agree. Turnovers are big key in losses and tie . Against chino there was a fumble and interception that could of led to 2 more tds . Against notre dame 4 big turnovers . Turnovers are key in all PAC 5 games .

      • 12th man

Apparently you’re new to these blogs! Everyone knows I have no ties to Amat..So i could care less who gets the start..But I would hope just like you said the Coaches would play the best Athletes..It’s also obvious you didn’t attend last week’s game..Amat did not lose because of turnovers lol…Are you kidding? They got beat in every aspect of the game..You clearly don’t follow High School Football! That or you’re just oblivious when it comes to recognizing when a team is getting completely dominated..ND ran the ball at will vs Amat averaging 7-8 yds per carry..There defense had no answers in allowing 49 points..Turnovers aren’t part of the play calling on offense! So give the Notre Dame defense some credit for causing those turnovers by applying pressure!…How many times did the ND QB get sacked? “0″..ZERO!!!..Again you can credit the O-line for protecting their QB~ Bottom line! That was Amat’s worse defeat..Do i feel Amat has a better team than Notre Dame? Maybe! It’s possible! But on that Friday ND was clearly the more dominant team in every aspect of the game & the Score Board serves as proof to what I’m saying~

        • SGV_Football_Fan

Everyone also knows that you have no clue about Amat football. The coaches have allowed competition at EVERY position all season and they are playing the kids who have WON the spots.

“Amat did not lose because of turnovers lol…Are you kidding?” That’s funny! I guess the 4 turnovers had no bearing on the game! LMFAO

“ND ran the ball at will vs Amat averaging 7-8 yds per carry”
Outside of the tackles….not inside where your mijo wants to play.
Just get him in the weight room and tell him to go out there and compete…..or did he already and he got beat out?
          Pobresito.

          • 12th man

You’re delusional! Keep telling yourself that 4 turnovers was the reason Notre Dame scored 49 points!!..They ran inside -outside, sideways, backwards..pick your poison!! Anytime a team can rush for over 329yds in a game! Trust me they’re running at will!!!.They had 475 total yards!! Come on bro quit smoking!!!..Done talking to you until you get educated in Football Son!!!

          • SGV_Football_Fan

Just tell mijo to get in the weight room. That’s all I can say. Tell him to be realistic and find a position he can compete at.

          • AMAT 73

            12th man,
To say the turnovers did not hurts us greatly is quite delusional on your part. Yes ND ran like hell against us but they adjusted to the fact of Velasquez not being there . What do you say about their adjustment on their kicking game . Did it not take field position away from us .They big time won the field position game . In doing so when the turnovers occurred the were in a favorable place for ND . Our D played with their back against the wall most of the night and were on the field a long time due to those turnovers. Did the turnovers solely cause the loss , no but they were a great contributor . Turnovers mean you aren’t putting points on the board when you should . You yourself were on here critiqing Koa on what he should do when playing the position , weren’t you ?????? You saw the open receivers as many did that were missed , didn’t you and wound up as an INT . Was that a factor ????? Koa is young and many forget this is his first year but when this kid is on he’s one of the best at moving the ball and scoring . We need for Koa to calm down , let the game come to him as he was doing earlier in the year and go to Andrews and Blue all night long with a little COOK every now and then plain and simple. Big Sal being out is a huge loss ,but now with a week of practice knowing he’s out , a LANCER has stepped up and with Sal on the sidelines leading the way the D will do the job. Believe you me AMAT WILL SHINE this Friday . But let me ask you this and it puzzles me , if you have no ties to AMAT why do you come on here and try to breakdown everything on AMAT and give hints to the coaches ( not much this season but last you were in rare form ) and players on how to play their position .Shiat you even give ticket info . So in closing I will end with what really led me to post . if you think those turnovers didn’t contribute heavily to the loss then you need a refresher in football 101 son. And you know they did , otherwise you would have never written that maybe AMAT had the better team !!!!!!!! but not on that night because the turnovers killed us .

          • 12th man

Anytime you allow a team to rush for 329 yds rushing you are not going to win PERIOD!! Amat could of had

          • AMAT 73

            12th Man,
I am not and never have sugarcoated a loss by AMAT. And I am usually the first on here giving props to the team that beats us on any Friday . No sugercoating any loss but look at the losses and count up the TO’s in those losses and the tie with CH . We are our own worst enemy this season . And how many of those 49 points came after each turnover ???? My point is for you to say the TOs had no effect on the loss is not very football smart in my book and that’s football on any level . If we hold on to the ball tonight and do not give LBP any gifts we will win . And if you don’t think Hags made a point of the turnovers in the locker room after the game , you are sadly mistaken. Either way let’s just say we have a diffence of opinion here and I hope you enjoy the game tonight as AMAT WILL SHINE !!!!!!!

      • Lancerito

I think you’re right SGV_Football_Fan. I’ve only heard great things about ALL of the linebackers at Amat.
I’ve never heard anyone saying we were getting beat up the middle. I’ve seen mistakes in the secondary (some of it due to no pressure), dropped passes, and turnovers but the linebacker group has never been an issue. I’m sure they make some mistakes, but we have a lot bigger fish to fry in other areas of the both offense and defense.
Sounds like a Daddy who is upset that his son got beat out by a sophomore. No shame in that though, that sophomore is pretty damn good!
Either way, tonight AMAT WILL SHINE ON BOTH SIDES OF THE BALL.
        ON BLUE!

  • Greenie

I don’t know if you can call Poly weak. Do you think Amat beats Serra or
Narbonne? Maybe they beat Bakersfield, but that would be no cake
walk…Poly is still Poly, the talent is their, the speed is still
their, the size is still their. Can the Jack rabbits put it together?
This will be a battle between Hags and Lara advantage BA…A coaches dual…due to
the Rain, it’s going to be more of a running game. Poly is a little
bigger up front., they might be able to lean on the the lancers. I hope
BA can pull it off. I am just playing devils advocate, because they
SGV can’t be thinking POLY is weak. They are fully capable of winning
this game. If you lose your starting middle LB in what seems like its
going to be a running event, it’s hard to replace that kind of
production. I’ve been a solid picker among the SGV’s top all season…
    Prediction

    LB Poly 21 BA 20
