Saturday Morning QB: Charter Oak’s Dominating D does it again; Gladstone romps, West Covina is back and the Mission Valley goes 3-0; Amat no match for LB Poly

Highlights: Gladstone won its first playoff game since 1977 to pay tribute to coach Albert Sanchez, who announced this week this is his final season after 13 years. El Monte QB Brandon Martinez’s game winning touchdown on the final play of a 44-43 win over Montebello gave him his sixth TD, tying him with Bishop Amat’s Pat Haden (1971) and Los Altos’ Felipe Aguilar (2000) for the all-time SGV record with 42 TDs in a season. Bonita’s Brandt Davis booted his 33rd career field goal in the Bearcats’ 11-10 loss to Santa Fe, tying him with Sherman Oak’s Notre Dame’s Chris Sailer and Don Lugo’s Luis Zendejas for most career field goals in CIF-SS history.

Leave it to Charter Oak coach Lou Farrar to come up with something creative to describe one of the best Chargers defenses he’s been part of.

“I had a freshman football team that had six shutouts once, so I don’t know,” Farrar said with a smile. “They’re good. They’re really good.”

Even with visiting Chaparral moving receiver Chris Stratton to quarterback in hopes of confusing or catching Charter off-guard, the Chargers were simply quicker and more physical in winning 24-14 in the first round of the CIF-Southern Section Inland Division playoffs Friday night.

You guy have to win the championship or it is all for NOTHING. It is just the same for every team. I don’t take pride on going to the second round or championship game. It’s about the ring at that is all. Hey at this point if a team from our league wins it ill be happy with that. Go Amat

      • Not Since 1995

Night Owl makes it seem as though the Lanceritos win the whole enchilada every year…! Hah…

Don’t get me wrong. Amat is Definitely not the Amat of the past. But it is all about the ring am I wrong?

The LA Times picked against us…Boo on them :(

BA vs Poly-With Sal out, i don’t see how Amat wins this game. In Reality, Amat is a at large team. At larges need everything clicking to win…I see poly in a close one. I hope I am wrong..
    LBP Wabbits-21 BIshop Amat 20

West Covina vs Paramount- Wesco look good in their new-old offense. However, when you don’t run something all year with a somewhat new cast of players, the timing won’t be great. I don’t think that Wesco will be able to keep a larger Paramount of balance. However looking back at Monrovia’s games vs Paramount, they are not a well coached team. The will leave a window for the bulldogs to win it. I just don’t think the bulldogs will take advantage. Especially when that window will be poor pass coverage. I see Paramount in a Thriller
    Paramount 28 West Co 21

    • http://twitter.com/Rubedog13 night owl

Don’t worry we got this. I think Amat is going to have a great game they are due for it. Number 19 needs to have a good game all the teams watch film on our D and you can see how they want to go at him on 3 and long or whenever they need yards. He is a CB. I think on some plays he plays off to much. No knock on him, but it would like to see him jamming the receiver on those plays where everyone knows they are going at them.

Bonita is plagued with injuries Fred & Aram, have you looked into it? I hope you’re right on the win though. West Covina should also get the win, but I don’t know much about Paramount. Should be a crazy night!

  • BA

I think it’s hilarious that some people are saying that this year’s Long Beach Poly team is weak and that Amat should beat them because they are weak. Did anyone bother to consider exactly who LBP lost to this year? Probably not cuz we are in the Fishbowl and in the Fishbowl, we judge a team based soley on win/loss record regardless of who that team played. LOL! Long Beach Poly only lost to Serra by ONE touchdown. Serra also beat Notre Dame this year in another close game. LBP also got hammered by Narbonne but Narbonne is awesome this year and has also beat Serra, Mater Dei, and Carson. I think the loss that throws the most people off is Bakersfield. But if one bothers to check, Bakersfield is a traditional football powerhouse and is actually the defending 2011 Central Division Champions. Though they have lost 2 games this year, they are still a top notch program that is never to be taken lightly.
I bleed Blue and Gold but there’s no way I would favor Bishop Amat over Long Beach Poly just because Poly has lost 3 games this year and is not undefeated LOL! This is going to be a tough game for the Lancers…especially without Sal V but I do have faith that our boys will pull out the W. Best of Luck, Lancers!!!!

    • Greenie

I said those exact words on the other thread…Poly is the most storied football program in America. They may be have a good year instead of Great, but they are far from weak. I am sure the people in LBC respect Amat, but I think they would be expecting to win their first round game at home vs a at large team. I would also expect poly to bring their A game, because I am speculating that Lara’s Job is on the line. 5 years without a Title is Taboo in Long Beach. I am not hating on Bishop, but it’s been 20 years since they won the big one, and LBP will make some moves if their reduced to losing 1st round games at home.

      • jcaz

Dude, I think you’ve made your point already and that is that your saying Amat’s not gonna win the game tonight.

Ok I got it, so how many more times and how many more ways do you need to say it already ?

      I agree 100% with BA…!

This may not be your older brother’s Long Beach Poly, but they ain’t Loyola either…! The Jackrabbits are gonna humiliate the Lanceritos the same way that Alemany and Notre Dame did! AmNOT has very weak Offensive and Defensive Lines. Their Linebackers (without Sal) will be over compensating, and the DBs…Hah…we all know what happens when the ball starts flying, right?
This is a fast Jackrabbits team. If the Jackrabbits play mistake free football, the game will be over by half time…!

Faith doesn’t win ball games! That’s a long way to go to get to A$$ handed to you…!

      Not In 2012…

    • warrior fan

I thinkits even more hillarious how everytime Amat loses to a team fans like you come on here trying to sell to everyone that the other team was better than what everyone knows. Bottom line is you lost and lost bad LBpoly is not good this year they’re ok Amat just sucks thats all.

      • Royal Blue Thunder

Sigh Warrior Fan…Are u still trying to convince everyone that your actually an Alemany affiliate! LMAO!!! With every post you write, you prove more and more that you are just another fishbowler envious of BA’s dominance over the SGV. If you knew anything about the Pac-5, you would never say anything as ignorant as “LBpoly is not good this year they’re ok.” Do you know who Serra, Narbonne, and Bakersfield are??? Of course you don’t. To you, these schools might as well be La Puente, Pioneer, and Sierra Vista! hahahahaa! Every year some retard (and it’s probably you) picks a school to champion and talks smack about BA only to dissapear and never return at the end of the season. You’ll dissapear (again) and next season, you’ll be back and claim that you are from another school. Of course, that school will be highly ranked and favored to beat BA. How original! LOL! J/K! It’s actually really sad for a grown man to behave this way but I’m sure you’re parents (especially your mother) are really proud of where your life has led you.

        • warrior fan

LOL….i laugh at your jealousy and your always famous excuses from every Amat fan. Even coach Lara was wondering if his team was good. Its funny how everytime Amat loses to a team a fen always come on here to post how good or great the other team was and thats why you lost. GIVE ME A BREAK own up to your whoopings LBpoly is not the same poly that it use to be im pretty sure Lara job would had been on the line if they had lost to an at large BA, makes you wonder why right, well think about it Serra is D4 yes theyre good but come on against poly a power house of the pac5 good is not enough especially when your on a lower level. Bakersfield ok D1 very good team but with loses to a 7-4 liberty team and another lost to a 7-3 frontier team after blown poly, makes the media question poly coaching because we know its not the athletes. Last but not least Narbonne a cinderella power house as of now. Think about it yes they won it all last year with an 11-3 record the year before that who even knew Narbonne they were 6-6 then before that 8-6 then tied San Pedro the year before that in the championship good team but more of an on and off type of program. My point is Poly losing to teams like that besides “nationally ranked narbonne this year” is rare for poly, so yes Poly was just an ok to good team this year Amat just sucked everytime Amat lost it was by 3 touchdowns or more and every time they lost someone like you comes on here after half the Amat nation just knew they were going to beat a team (even fredj) changes up their story and have excuses on why they lost.

          #PATHETIC

    • CO Boiiii!!

Haha!! Amat Lost! What a disappointment of a season!

      • Royal Blue Thunder

You know what’s even more dissapointing? Charter Oak getting mauled by Bishop Amat. Want another dissapointing statistic? Over their past 3 meetings, Bishop Amat has outscored Charter Oak by 92 to 21 points…that’s a game average score of 31 to 7.
31-7 average loss to the Lancers. Great football program ya’ll have over there LOL!

  • 12th man

The thing that troubles me is Amat’s road record over the last 5 years..It’s 11-9 & has lost every last league game & 1st playoff game for the past 3 years..LBP might not be the Pac5 favorites but by no means are they having a down year~They are still the traditional ground & pound team that wares you down throughout the game. They usually feature backs that can over power you up the middle or beat you on the sidelines with speed..This year is no different, They have the weapons & the defense to make this a close game..I think we might be seeing a repeat of the 08-09 playoff game when Poly pulled it off at the last minute..Good Luck Amat! Bring back the W!

    • 12th man

Let’s not forget Long Beach Poly defense has not allowed a single point in the 1st half for it’s last 6 games~ Opponents have scored in the second half in dirt time~

      • fb101

Ummm…..yes in that POWERFUL Moore league.

        • Greenie

Has Amat Beat Poly…this is not the strongest poly team, but this is not the strongest Amat team either! I say Amat is going to need to play the best game of the year, or they will lose. As good as all of the Serra league teams are, None of them are as storied as poly, and none of those places will be rocking like Veterans Stadium. Tonight. This will be a tough place to play. Amat played the Wabbits well last time, but fell short…I still see it happening like that tonight. Good Luck Lancers prove me wrong. I don’t make picks with my heart…

    • fb101

FYI….Amat beat Crespi on the ROAD in the 2011 season, beat Loyola in 2012 on the ROAD.

      • 12th man

You must not be reading clearly! I never said they haven’t won on the road! I said their record is 11-9 last five years on the road! Not to mention they have lost every last league game & 1st playoff game for the past 3 years.

      • 12th man

One last stat for you! Amat is 0-5 for the last 3 years in the month of November! & over the last 9 years Amat has 7 wins vs 16 loses in the month of November!…November has not been kind to the Lancers hopefully they can change that tonight!

  • AMAT 73

Good luck to all the teams of the SGV tonight for well played and injury free games. Remember there is no next week without your best efforts tonight so go out and get it done .
To the Men in Blue , you must bring the A game tonight . Stay focused , disciplined ,and leave it all on the field and bring home the W . AMAT WILL SHINE TONIGHT !!!!!

This may not be your older brother’s Long Beach Poly, but they ain’t Loyola either…! The Jackrabbits are gonna humiliate the Lanceritos the same way that Alemany and Notre Dame did! Whipped by boht lines and out run by the speedy guys. This is a fast team. If the Jackrabbits play mistake free football, the game will be over by half time…!

Much props to the Colts, and Eagles awesome game!

  • 12th man

    Amat 73,
This was a repeat performance from last week!! My point was Amat didn’t lose last week to ND because of turnovers. They got steam-rolled & allowed 329 yds rushing!! Tonight they didn’t turn the ball over & got beat to a bloody pulp on the ground! LBP rushed for over 450yds..That’s over 779 yds rushing in two games & i’m not even adding the passing yds..Maybe some of the Freshman team should have played? When you’re giving up that many yards ..apparently whatever you’re trying isn’t working & at that point you have nothing to lose! Would like to hear on your take of the game? That Long Beach Defense was legit..Holding Amat to really just 11points if you take-away the pick 6 & the last minute TD..in other words subtract 14 points from the final of 25 & that would leave 11..I do respect the fact Amat played with heart & would not give up without a fight at the start of the 3rd quarter they held LBP but unfortunately the offense could not get going against that stingy LBP defense who wasn’t giving up anything on the ground! Hats off to the men in blue! You guys had a great year & going 7-3-1 is nothing to be ashamed of..Especially when most predicted at the start of the season you would be 4-6 or 5-5 at best..Good Job Lancers~ See you in 2013..Now it’s time to support whoever is left in SGV from other divisions~

I’m sorry I’m a Amat fan I think all the shifting Penalties is just a joke. Come on don’t they practice these plays? Amat comes up small in away big games on the road and now at home. They do not have a killer Instinct . They are soft on defense and on there mentality. I didn’t see 1 not 1 big Hit this year! Come on really not 1. I am not knocking the players at all I am simply aiming at Coaching on not having the kids ready. And I hate to… I’m not even going to go there. All I have to say as a Amat fan that goes to all the games and don’t even have a kid on the team I am very Disappointed

    Poly Pounds Bishop Amat

Heading into the Southern Section playoffs, Long Beach Poly Coach Raul Lara was unsure if his team was a legitimate title contender.

The Jackrabbits emphatically answered that question with a 40-25 victory over La Puente Bishop Amat on Friday night in a first-round Pac-5 Division playoff game at Veterans Memorial Stadium in Long Beach.

“We haven’t redeemed ourselves just yet, but we played good enough to move on,” said Lara, whose team has reeled off seven consecutive wins since losing its last three nonleague games. “It was Poly football — run, go play-action when we need it and play physical on defense.”

Gerard Wicks owes his offensive linemen lunch but he’ll gladly treat them after rushing 17 times for 223 yards and three touchdowns, the last a 75-yarder that gave Poly a 33-17 lead with 15 seconds left in the third quarter.

“We saw that the Notre Dame guy [Khalfani Muhammad] ran on them last week, so I knew I could do the same,” said Wicks, who was planning to take a trip to Pullman for tonight’s game between Washington State and UCLA, both schools he is considering. “Bishop Amat likes to blitz the gap, so my plan was to bounce to the outside where I could use my speed.”

Manusamoa Luuga added 175 yards in 18 carries as the Jackrabbits amassed 462 yards on the ground.

Poly took its first lead on Wicks’ 64-yard run with 8:16 left in the second quarter and went ahead 27-17 when quarterback Tai Natani Tiedemann scrambled 26 yards for a touchdown with 1:01 left in the first half.

The Jackrabbits (8-3) will be underdogs at undefeated Mission Viejo in the quarterfinal round next week, but Wicks looks forward to the challenge.

“We lost to them last year and we’ve never beaten them in our history, so we’d like to change that,” Wicks said. “We’re a better team than we were earlier in the season. We’re playing together and our confidence is much higher.”

Bishop Amat (7-3-1) took a 7-0 lead on the first play from scrimmage when Anthony Camargo intercepted a Tiedemann pass and returned it 23 yards for a touchdown.

Later, Dionza Blue caught a 58-yard touchdown pass from Koa Haynes on fourth down to give the Lancers a 14-7 lead midway through the first quarter.

Haynes completed 20 of 30 passes for 315 yards.

Well i am embarrassed for ever thinking that you Lancers were going to win a playoff game, it feels like when i use to root for Buffalo every time they made it to the super bowl i thought this is the year well and just like what happen to them then, it keeps happening to Amat only in the first round though. Better luck next year!!!!!!!!!!!

    • http://twitter.com/Rubedog13 night owl

I’ll see Alemany on tv in the championships AND winning it all. If not Alemany is just like every other them that didn’t win it all no more no less. You don’t get PAC 5 championships for going to the second round or even semi. Could you imagine if you had a guy like Not since 95 on your team every year except his name would be Not since the Existence of the team. Good luck.

      • warrior fan

LOL…the funny thing is when Amat is mentioned in conversation no one but you fans bring up the championship from last century. Any other outsiders always says well they have Alemany in their division and they will not beat them.

        • http://twitter.com/Rubedog13 night owl

All eyes are on Alemany now. I hope they get it done. Don’t be another buffalo billS I will be the first to Congratulate you on your teams PAC 5 championship. If you don’t……. Well another year no championship for alameny not since ever.

  • jcaz

I for one would be the very first person to say that it is
not the coach who’s out there on the field of play making the crucial tackles, or making the big three pointers when the team needs them most. However, the fact is that it is the COACH who is untimely the most responsible party when a team isn’t performing the way that it should be.

After all, if I am completely wrong here, then why in the
world would a team like the Los Angeles Lakers decide to fire a good head coach, when that very same fellow has taken another team, to the NBA finals ?

Its all about production and all about, what have you done
for me lately. If I’m wrong, then please ask the fellow who used to coach the offense over at Servite. If im not mistaken, I think he’s washing cars now.

Anyway, the fact is that a coach impacts his team in many many
ways, and I for one have to say that maybe……. just maybe, there is a need to be a moment here where Amat needs to revaluate the current situation with respect to the performance of this team over the last few years.

Now, before I start a war, I need to make my argument very clear
here so that there is no misunderstanding. Again, its not about a simple won a loss record. Amat has had plenty of incredible wins over
the current coaching staffs tenure, but rather, it’s all about the end result. Or, better stated, about the “totality” of the work.

The fact is, that Amat has had approximately five years of
frustration when it came down to the playoffs, and if you look around, there have been at least a half a dozen schools who have brought in new head coaches in that same period of time and they have
all had a great deal more success than has our team has, beginning of course with Alemany, who BTW happens to be in our very same league.

At present we have blogers like Aram who are constantly banging
on or team. He has tried to make the case that Amat needs to have some sort of “relief.”

He says that Amat, simply cannot compete in the PAC5. Well, maybe he’s right ? Maybe it’s time that Amat needed to start to look at some of these issues square in the eye. After all, if you cant compete then do something so you can. Either step down, or look for a change somewhere where a difference can be made

You know, at first I thought his argument was ludicrous. But in the end, I am beginning to think he’s right. We never seem to have the kind of athletes to actually compete with the schools we often have to face.
But the question here is….. why is that ? I mean, why is it that we cant seem to get thos quality players and why is it that we cant get past the first round in these very same playoffs each and every year ?

Well folks, It’s because our coaching staff isn’t doing what other Catholic school are doing in order to win.

Look, if your going to have someone whom you’ve hired to win
football games, then at the very least, win a few right ? Am I asking a lot here ?????

A program cant choose to ignore the fact that maybe there needs to
be a moment of reflection, and MAYBE, its not unfair to say that at this point, that Amat is at that very place.

There needs to be an understanding that, something simply, isn’t just right here

The funny part about all of this is that is isn’t as if the talent
pool isnt out there. It is. Yet the irony here is that for whatever reason, Amat isn’t giving that talent pool the chance to come play for the Lancers.

Saying that we are “better than that” and that “we don’t do
the things that other schools do to get good players in” is starting to get
real old right about now, because if you have decided to play at this level, and have also chosen not to do the things that you need to do in order to win, then maybe you need to sit down and figure why your model isn’t working.

You know, if a coach is making over 100 thousand dollars a year, like the guy over at Crespi is, and if that same guy cant get his team either into the playoffs, or past the first round consistently, then maybe he needs to be doing something other than coaching. Believe me when I tell you that pretty soon, he’ll be washing cars as well.

Incredibly, and for some reason or other, the current coaching staff had a chance to bring in a quality running back earlier this year. Yet, they chose not to do so.

The funny part to all of this is that while officially, Amat has chosen to be this apparent bastion of holiness, they nevertheless decide to play in a division where their opponents play for keeps. In fact, they play against schools who are actually suing the CIF over the issue of bringing
in the best football players. Its called recruitment folks, and the funny part is that the guys over at Amat all say they want to win too, but for some unknown reason, nobody over there seems to have gotten that memo.

Look, they all want to win, and if you think im crazy, then why did Poly try to fool you guys with that fake “take a knee play” tonight ? cause they wanted it more than you did.

    One last thing here……

Not to many years ago, Amat let go of an indelibly nice fellow. No doubt about it. He was a former Lancer, and without a doubt, he was well liked by many people in the schools administration. However, that young man simply wasn’t getting the job done.

The powers that be, recognized that fact and, as the Lakers
general manager said today, that organization “decided to go in another
    direction.”

Well, guess what folks ? I think that there should be a valid discussion about CONSIDERING that very same thing here because if you want to win important football games, and if don’t know how to do that or, if you cant handle a 17 year old St Paul transfer when the kid is literally begging you to come play for you, then maybe the administration
needs to consider the idea of going in another direction?

    Chew on that folks

    • fb101

      jcaz,

you are usually a rational poster, what’s going on? This HS football NOT professional sports.

This Lancer team outplayed EVERY team in the valley[again] that had the stones to play them. Before the season started most ‘pundits’ predicted the Lancers to lose more games than they won. Funny how that seems to be a trend that the Lancers seem to ‘defy’ every season.

Sure, the early round playoff losses ARE disappointing, but NO ONE should EVER dispute the preparation and effort of the players and coaches. When Hag’s took over the program the Lancers were not even MAKING the playoffs. So there has been progress since Hags has taken over. Again, not playoff progress, BUT progress.

Your reference to the former coach is comical. That coach was in way over his head and it showed EVERY week they played. Hags took the former coaches players and won RIGHT AWAY. Why was that?

It is my assertion that that 2 year tenure damaged the talent pipeline that Hags/Amat is finally beginning to turnaround. Even Amat legacies stopped having their sons come to Amat to play ball. THAT was a serious issue.

This season’s freshman class went 10-0 and won the league championship for the first time in at least 5 seasons. You could SEE the talent on the field EVERY Thursday. The results showed the talent level in on the RISE. There were 16 or so frosh players that suited up all week for playoff practice and were on the sidelines for last nights game. In the 5 seasons that Hag’s has been coaching at Amat, THAT is the MOST I have ever seen. Talent in the pipeline, YES. So Amat IS moving forward in attracting TALENT.

Next season’s team is going to be VERY young. BUT there were a fair amount of underclassmen that played this season that should give the coaching staff enough to work with to have a very good season AGAIN. Throw in some key talented transfers and perhaps a longer playoff run would be in order.

You allude to the Scoby transfer. Wow. Do you REALLY think Amat needs to sink THAT low to obtain a talented but troubling player? 5 high schools in LESS than 3 football seasons? NO thank you.

IF the admin was FOOLISH enough to even consider moving in a different direction, they would be making a HUGE mistake. In MY opinion, HC deserves a RAISE for a job well done AND to keep him happy. I would NOT be surprised to see another school make a run at Hags and make a very attractive offer to lure him away.

IF I am incorrect anywhere, please let me know and be SPECIFIC.

      • http://twitter.com/Rubedog13 night owl

And the freshman team from 5 years ago did what when the got to varsity? If I am a good talent on freshman I would leave Amat now with there no size having a** imagine what number 7 or 2 could do with some big boys blocking for them. Until Amat gets some size on that line

        • fb101

          Night Owl,

That freshman team was this season’s varsity. They were 0-4 in league, so even THEN the varsity level potential was stunted.

The 2012 frosh squad has some size, the issue is that the Varsity needs that size NEXT season. Perhaps the 2013 varsity team will be able to meld the returning linemen with some of the 2012 frosh and get bigger/better as a unit.

You know, I'm going to guess that your kinda new to this blog because I've only recently noticed your posts on here. However, for those of you old timers, let me remind you that I was one of the very first to call upon the administration to consider the idea of going in another directIon with the last head coach. It wasn't a popular idea at first, but after a while, the tide seem to change a bit b FB, let me give you an analogy here and perhaps by doing so, you will understand where in coming from. Here, in the city of Angels, we have two professional basketball teams. We have the clippers and if course, we have the lakers. Now, every now and then, the clippers will win an important regular season game. In fact, if memory serves me correctly, they just defeated the spurs, am i correct ? No doubt, a good and solid win againt a talented team.
However, come playoff time, no matter how impressive the clippers were during in the regular season, most people are never surprised when the clippers end up losing. The fact is, that they are not the lakers. And no matter how you slice it, they WILL NEVER WIN A CHAMPIONSHIP if they NEVER decide to make the same the commitment that teams like the lakers, or the Celtics or the Miami Heat have chosen to take. So, your agrgument here, is Amat is a better team than they were under the last coach. Well, guess what ? The Clippers are a better team than they were under Elgin Baylor. Would you agree with that statement ? Ok, so far so good because I think your kinda following where I'm going with this right ? Look, the bottom line is that Haggs isn't getting the job done. He and his staff are not only getting outplayed, but they're getting out recruited. Tell me, why is it that Alemany was in the toilet not to long ago and today they have all these Padadena guys in their roster ? Tell me, why was it that many of those same pundits you just spoke about even considered, that Amat was going to be a 4 and 6 team to begin with ? I mean, why fo we not have the expectation that we are going to not only win, but to dominate ? BTW, this other bolger spoke about me writing a check in order to cover tuition for these transfers I'd like to have come play over at Amat.? How funny because maybe he's right. Maybe instead of covering a portion of the tuition, Amat should consider doing the same thing that these other Catholic schools are doing, because they are wining are they not ? Ok FB, let me leave you with these two last thoughts. From now on until this tournament ends, I want you to read and re-read every message Warrior Fan says and the same thing about Non-Sense. Tell me how that feels to you.

        • fb101

          jcaz,

NOT new at all. Kudos to you for seeing what ANY person could see was inferior coaching.

Lakers/Clippers is not valid since that is a professional situation and rules are vastly different between HS/pros.

I HAVE read messages Warrior Fan and Non-Sense WRITE. They both SPEW PURE DRIVEL.

How do I ‘feel’ about what they write? I DGAF about their conjecture/speculation/bs.

The Amat admin needs to support the football program much better than it has IF it wants to get the program back to a consistemt elite status. However better support does NOT mean letting any knucklehead in to school just cause they can play football.

    • Lancerito

      jcaz,
I completely agree with you that maybe it is time to CONSIDER a new approach. As the Administration is CONSIDERING the new approach though, I think the extent of the process should be for them (the Administration) to stand in front of the mirror and ask themselves if they want to continue the AMAT Football Tradition or if they want to transfer the Damien High School where their current approach would fit right in.
What’s happening on the field is EXCEPTIONAL. The coaches are the BEST IN SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA….HANDS DOWN. They are EXCEEDING ALL EXPECTATIONS with respect to what they do with the talent they have. THEY OVER ACHEIVE EVERY YEAR!
The issue is one of finances and support…PERIOD. The OC schools are giving scholarships and the AMAT Administration is not….PERIOD. The coaches have no say in this.
I’ve got a great idea for you! Why don’t you write a check for 6 or 7 stud football players to attend AMAT and see what these coaches can do with a larger talent pool. Then you would see how much these guys are really worth!
The issue you raise is not a bad one, but the direction you’re pointing is completely off base. Oh and by the way, 7-3-1 is pretty damn good against the competition they faced just in case you missed that.

    • 12th man

I agree! Amat needs to stay with the times..This isn’t the 90′s anymore when you had all that natural homegrown talent & the demographics were different! All these elite private schools who are winning Championships are all recruiting & accepting big time transfers..It’s honorable & respectable that Amat holds high standards & won’t just let anyone enroll or transfer but you can’t really expect to win that way can you? Don’t be surprised if we see some changes by next summer..I don’t know if relief is in Amat’s picture..But if they ever decide to bring St.Bonnies & Oaks Christian to the Serra that would be a good time to think about it..

    BONITA BLOWS UP AGAIN:

Well, I would half to say it was the same out come for the Bonita Bearcats as last year, one and out. It was basically the same as last year except this year the team Bonita was playing was totally beatable. They had no real offense and the defense was fair at best. They were totally ready for a running team but would have been easily beat able with some could QB play. What it came down to was Bonita’s starting QB COULDN’T GET THE JOB DONE! The very first play of the game was a bubble screen pass that would have been picked off and run in for a TD, if the defender would not have dropped it, and that was just the beginning. The team was bogged down with 3 and outs until Diebold was benched in the start of the second quarter. Bonita then brought in another QB, #11, Brazill. He came in and began a drive on his own 20 yard line. It seemed like the team came alive and was moving, the O-Line was firing off the ball and getting to the second level of the defense. It was mostly runs except for two passes which should have been caught, but were dropped by #40. He needs to use his hands and not his forearms to catch with. But the team drove to Santa Fe’s 15 yard line. They had a 3 and 4 and instead of trying to get Santa Fe to jump off sides and continue the drive, they called a time out and kicked a field goal. Why, not try the hard count and if,they dont jump off sides, then call the time out and kick the field goal. Davis kicks the field goal and Bonita has 10-3 lead. Santa Fe got the ball back and almost scored before the half but was stopped on a great defense play by #42. So, Bonita goes to halftime with a 10 to 3 lead. When Bonita gets the ball back here comes Diebold, bad move. They cant move the ball and he almsot throws another pick. Lets not forget he has already had two in the first half, plus another that should have been a pick six. So it’s three and out. I think the game stats will reflect he had 4 first downs all night. As usual Bonita scores no points in the second half. But Bonita gives up a safety and Santa Fe scores a TD on a drive that is kept alive by pass interference committed by Bonita’s #12, who should have been sitting on the bench, since #23 was able to play tonight. Now the score is 11-10, Santa Fe. Bonita again goes with Diebold, who is unable to find wide open receivers down field, to keep drives alive and goes three and out. In the final drive of the game Diebold has his favorite receiver wide open and behind the defender on a go route and he throws it 5 yards behind him and 5 yards out of bounds. So,now it comes down to 4th down and I believe 6. Diebold looks to long at one receiver, is almost sacked, by his own actions and instead of running for the first down, he had a wide open field in front of him, he throws a wild pass to his favorite receive in the back of the end zone, who makes a valiant try, but drops it. The ball is turned over on downs with about a minute left in the game. Bonita did not need the home run ball at all. All they needed was a first down to keep the drive alive. If they would have got the first down they would have been well within the leg distance of Davis who could have won it for them with just a simple field goal. Bonita lost Reggie Turner early in the game to a re-injury of his leg and with no Reggie there is No Bonita. The stats posted on Max Preps shows Diebold was 7 of 19 for 52 yards with 2 interceptions and no TD’s and a QB rating of 6. The people I was sitting with and the students in the student section kept saying they should have stayed with #11 since he was able to move the team. I only hope they make some major changes early and get ready for next year. I hope Bonita can return to some of its glory it had during me step daughters years. Go Bearcats!!!!!

    • Just Saying

They can’t win a big games. The pattern has been there for years but everyone wants to act as if these coaches can’t do any wrong.

    • New York

Put them in the Mid-Valley. Put Bonita into the Valle Vista League.

  • The Chef

Hey Greenie (weenie) thanks for the 411 on Westco and La Serna You were so right with your impressive football knowledge that La Serna just wasn’t up to the DRanch challenge. They absolutely embarrassed themselves by winning 49-0. Paramount absolutely destroyed Westco just like you said even though they lost by 30. You have got to be the (self appointed) football ge-anus of the SGV

    • Jim

Please don’t refer to diamond ranch they are Pomona ranch.saw the school bus Pomona unified school . Plain and simple thy are pomona

      • The Chef

Jim I am sure you have your own issues with Anal retentive behavior but let me assure that the school name is Diamond Ranch High School. They are in Pomona Union District and Pomona City Limits but their name is Diamond Ranch. Next you will be objecting to using Bonita High School because it is LaVerne. Buy a clue and find a real issue.

        • Jim

you don’t get it. Whatever Bonita is Bonita but diamond ranch name doesn’t make sense, they aren’t in diamond br. They are ashamed of Pomona. Go lancers

          • Colt74

2 cities in California..London and Dublin I guess should change their names…using your logic Los Altos and Charter Oak should change their names too. WTF??????????

  • Valley Athletics

Amat has to get with the program and recruit . Even with recruiting it still is tough to win in PAC 5 . But at least you move forward . PAC 5 is at the most competive it’s ever been . Amat looked to small and just got pounded . Everyone was on here saying how poly sucked . Lara said in highlights that those are the 2 best backs he had in years and that he had to sit them most of the year in league so they wouldn’t run up the score . Good job lancers . Everyone thought you would be under 500 . Congrats on that

  • Jim

La serna tromps Pomona ranch got that one right, wasn’t even a game.

  • Joe Kelly

Fred, forget about reporting what happened during the game, as apparently you have no desire or inclination as a journalist. For your reader’s benifit, in the Chaparral vs Charter Oak game Chaparral had 2 T.D.’s called back and one dropped pass in the end zone. They also missed 2 F.G.’s. I know that may be a lot to fit into your reporting, but one would think that you would want to give an account of what happened and not just be a San Gabriel Valley homer. Charter Oak did deserve to win the game. Their players played hard, with class and sportsmanship. Their announcer, on the other hand, is a toad. Perhaps you were too busy preparing your ‘notes’ to notice that the ‘toad’ was making announements while Chaparral was trying to run their offense? Finally, I don’t know why the coach of Charter Oak made a comment about Chaparral players changing their uniform numbers? One player, who had a number not on the program, changed it prior to last weeks game (with Vista Murrieta) where he was moved to strong safety. the coach, in making that comment, implied, ,if not stated, that Chaparral was trying to be deceptive, but the ‘old cagey and wise coach’ couldn’t be fooled. Just like the saying goes; you can allow people to think you’re an idiot, or open you mouth and remove all doubt.

    • SGV_FOOTBALL

Stop complaining, you dont hear any CO fans ripping Fred for not calling out those POS assistant coaches from Chaparral dropping F bombs from the top of the bleachers since your talking about our announcer. Also why would he cater to the 3 Chaparral fans this is a SGV newspaper with thousands of SGV fans?

      • Joe Kelly

SGV You articulate yourself at a level that is equal to a 6th grade education. It’s no wonder that you don’t care about journalism and prefer a made up world, also known as non fiction. Although, one would think that a Sports journalist were adept at telling the actual stroy of what had transpired. Even in typing these few words in reply, I know that I am dealing with an individual incapable of defense: Not only in writing but in creativity. Finally, if you ever mature, you may find that one’s inadequacies are not the fodder (or reason, if that’s easier for you) for another person’s poor behavior. In other words, so that you may understand what I am saying, if that’s at all possible; excuses such as, “I was late to work, Timmy is all of the time”, is not generally considered justification, for bad behavior, in the real world. Finally, don’t take this too personally. It won’t do you any good to tell your mother that you won’t eat, or go to bed on time, because a mean man was making fun of you. Good luck with the 7th grade!
PS: Fred might be wanting in story telling, but I am very sure that as a defense, he probably doesn’t really need you, I’m just saying.

        • SGV_Football_Fan

Joe….being from the SGV, I unfortunately agree with you.

The “reporters” at the SGV Tribune are turning into Maury Popvich’s. They are not interested in reporting accurately what happened at a game, they are more interested in creating drama and trying the pump up their Team of the Week to create blog hits.

I for one am going to reduce the number of hits I place on the site just to send a message that unbiased reporting is important.
I can see all the phony reality TV shows I want on every channel. I don’t need more here. I logon to see how the local teams are doing not to hear all of their biased, baseless, non-sense.
Congratulations to Chapparal on a great season and being in a very close game with CO which is a quality team!

          • Joe Kelly

SGV, perhaps the most unfortunate aspect of this reporting is that Fred knows what his readership wants? Peolple don’t want to read, write, or take the time to be considerate. As you stated about reality T.V. that is what sells. The individual that responded to my post told me in essence that, they did not need, or desire to be informed and then slighted me for taking the time (thoughtfulness, I suppose) to articulate my thoughts. That is a very consistent thought pattern and representitive of todays society. Maybe Fred, who I do not know, is just mailing it in, as it were? Many very normal people lose passion for their vocations. It’s possible that Fred no longer desires to write, maybe he just wants to get by? Or maybe, when he has written quality material, no one seems to care? Either way it is a shame that those who work hardest at what they do receive the least recognition. I did attend the Charter Oak/Chaparral game and one of the deciding factors was the play of the offensive line in the 2nd half. It doesn’t take too much time to say; Jimmy Cruz, Left Tackle number 60, 6’1, 250 a junior….these kids work so hard and what they do means the world to them……but no, it’s all about me and sensationalism. I think you really have to care in this instance and perhaps that is what is lacking. Thanks for your correspondence.

        • SGV_FOOTBALL

All I can do is laugh at the time you put into your little argument. When I landed in Nor Cal and I met with my team (not football team) we had a nice little laugh at your expense and we discussed my 6th grade education in detail.

          Ceee-Ohhh!!!

  • New York

Were most of Poly’s yards and points off of long runs that were allowed by an initial missed tackle or an almost tackle? I think if MV has a couple backers making plays it will be a long night for the Rabbits. You can’t ever count out a team as talented as Poly, but they have taken some really one-sided losses the past couple years at the hands of some of these other powerhouses. I think if Amat’s linebacker had not been hurt, then this game would have been a lot closer.

    • GO BIG BLUE

I agree. Velasquez would have made the difference. Daniels and Ortega would have contributed also. Such is life…

    • SGV_Football_Fan

Yeah. I think if Amat still had Hauser on the line and Barrera playing defense if would have been a different game too. Hauser was a great lineman. Too bad they left, but I’m glad they are doing well at CO.

  • New York

so now we get to cheer for Charter Oak, the team that has become the local version of the Permian Panthers. Smaller school in a bigger division with a legendary coach. I think Charter Oak must have better coaches than Rancho. It seems like Rancho is loaded with talent every year but still can’t beat Upland. I like Charter Oak’s chances if they get their ground game going. It will be tough to throw against Rancho’s secondary.

    • SGV_Football_Fan

I don’t think CO has beaten Upland yet either so I’m not sure why you would say that about Rancho. This should be a good game and best of luck to both teams.

      • New York

        SGV_Football_Fan,
I really like Rancho as a community and I was very familiar with their program back in the late 1990′s. My premise for suggesting that Charter Oak has better coaches is that Charter Oak is on the rise. Look at their trajectory. They are a small school playing against much bigger schools. Rancho regularly has monster linemen, big skills, etc. They should have a better record against Upland than they do. In the big games, Upland takes Rancho. This is not a knock on Rancho so much as a compliment toward Charter Oak and what they have been able to do. They just got moved up from the Southeast two seasons ago. The Baseline was in the Inland then dropped to the Central and now back to the Inland. In closing, no one ever expects Charter Oak to beat Upland, but I would regularly expect Rancho to beat Upland but they don’t.

LBP had 398 total rushing yards. 202 of those yards came on three runs. I’d say that Amat missing a sure-tackling linebacker had a major impact on the final score. Amat’s lack of depth widened the margin. MV will have other challenges, but not a lack of depth.

Colt74, you’re welcome to come join us as Muir visits West Covina at Thyberg Field next Friday night! It is going to be a classic East vs. West SGV Showdown! So many talented football atheletes on both teams! Sorry about Covina losing, I think a lot of WC fans have gained a lot of respect for Covina over these last few years. Those Colts play with tons of heart and toughness!

      • Colt74

I just may take you up on the offer. Only WesCo game I have seen this season was against Loyola.. (and I’m not counting our game..I have blocked that game out of my memory for some reason) LOL. I think the Bulldogs will handle Muir no problems but since I went to a San Dimas playoff game last year think I need to get my rear end to one of yours this week. Yup, think you made my mind up for this Friday. Besides, that blow up tunnel is kick ass!

        • WCDan

          Colt 74,
Sorry about your Colts, like BHB said , many WC fans have come to respect the way Covina plays with heart, even if they are out gunned sometimes. Yeah funny you mentioned our blow up Bulldog tunnel, before the game when Paramount had finished warming up, and was on the way to the locker room for their pep talk, the whole Paramount team went out of their way and walked two by two through the blow up Bulldog tunnel.
The Bulldog team, who were already in the locker room at the time, must have got word about it, cause they came out hitting last night.

          • Colt74

Stuff like that..I have ZERO tolerance for disrespecting another teams turf. ZERO. But I guess you got to disrespect them right back with the final score. :)

          • Bulldogs have bite

There was no disrespect on our part. We just dominated them. Our final score came with our third string QB leading the rest of our reserves down the field. Then we punched it in with a Freshmen RB getting his 2nd carry of the season, his first being two plays before that. I really didn’t mind them walking through the Bulldog tunnel, they just wanted to see what it is like to be a Bulldog just once in their lives!

        • WCDan

          Colt 74,
Sorry about your Colts, like BHB said, many WC fans have come to respect the way Covina Colts play hard, even if they are out gunned sometimes.
Funny you mentioned our blow up Bulldog Tunnel.
When Paramount had finished warming up before the game and was walking to the lockeroom for their pregame talk, the whole team went out of it’s way and walked two by two through the West Covina Bulldog tunnel. I wonder if the Bulldogs, who did not see it happen, got word of it, cause they came out and played more physical than I had seen them all year.

    • SGV_FOOTBALL

Did Paramount really run through your tunnel?

      • Bulldogs have bite

They didn’t run through it. After the pregame warm ups they walked through it holding hands two by two. Some of them tapping the ceiling as they walked back to the locker room. They did go out of their way to walk through it, but after a 41-9 beatdown I’m sure it was the highlight of their evening!

  • http://twitter.com/jessegarcia40 jesse garcia

Yeah they sure did walk through our tunnel. That told me every thing i wanted to know about Paramount. Colt 74 as far Covina i have the upmost respect for the program.Weather you win or we win, there is always respect for the other team. I hope we continue to play each other.
