The road to the Sierra League boys basketball title will run through Chino Hills. The Huskies left little doubt Friday night.
Bishop Mency scored 28 points and Mark Williams had 11 and Chino Hills rolled to a 72-39 victory over Damien in a battle of the top two teams in the league.
The Huskies, who shot nearly 60 percent from the floor, improved to 16-4 overall and 4-0 in the Sierra League. Isaiah McCullough had 12 points for Damien, which slipped to 15-3 and 3-1. Chino Hills, using a 20-2 run during a six-minute stretch during the first and second quarters, led 49-18 at halftime.
Chino Hills coach Steve Baik:“”If you would have given me a million dollars to say the game would have ended like this, I never would have fathomed this. (Damien’s) Matt Dunn is a phenomenal coach. I think early on our defense took away some of their momentum and it was capitalized by us hitting shots. We were relentless on the defensive end. That’s what we wanted to do. This is the first time we’ve put it together defensively.”
Damien coach Matt Dunn: “They are really good. They played great. I thought they played better, were better coached. I think they are really good. There was nothing about tonight that had to do with us. They are really good.”
