SoCal Shootout on Saturday at APU

Nobody will receive any banners for a win and nobody’s season will end with a loss. But area bragging rights will be on the line Saturday at the SoCal Shootout at Azusa Pacific University.

The field recently was announced and area fans are in for a treat. The headliner is La Canada against Glendora in a matchup of two of the top programs in Valley history, not to mention two of the top coaches in the Spartans’ Tom Hofman and the Tartans’ Mike LeDuc.

The game will be a matinee and is scheduled to tip off at 1:30 p.m.

Fans of the girls game are in for a treat at noon when Bishop Amat, arguably the top program in area history and led by coach Richard Wiard, takes on Bonita and standout point guard Nikki Wheatley.

“I’m up for a challenge,” Bonita coach Darren Baumunk said. “Bishop Amat is obviously the top program around our area, so it’s always exciting and a challenge for us to see where we stand as a program.

“It’s bragging rights. It’s not like if we lose our season’s over.”

Bonita eliminated Bishop Amat from the CIF-Southern Section playoffs in 2011. The Lancers returned the favor last season and defeated Bonita in the state playoffs.

The marquee game of the event comes at 6 p.m. when Damien takes on Centennial. Both teams have spent most of the season as the top-ranked teams in their respective CIF-SS divisions.

Other local games include Flintridge Prep vs. Alta Loma, 9 a.m., Rowland vs. Saddleback, 10:30 a.m., Claremont vs. Rancho Verde, 4:30 p.m. and Los Osos vs. Maranatha, 9 p.m.
