Los Altos’ Stephanie Contreras closing in on CIF-SS all-time goal-scoring record in girls water polo

Los Altos High School has had its fair share of elite athletes over the years.
The list includes football players Mike Smith and Shaun Cody, baseball player Sergio Santos and golfer Bob May.
The latest Conqueror to shine is senior girls water polo player Stephanie Contreras, who is on the verge of becoming the all-time goal-scoring leader in the CIF-Southern Section. La Salle’s Kara-Leigh Huse (2004-08) is the all-time leader with 620 goals.

Contreras will attempt to inch closer to history today while also helping Los Altos in its biggest game of the season, a 3:30 p.m. Hacienda League encounter against first-place Bonita at Los Altos.

The Bearcats, who won a CIF-SS Division5 title in 2011, beat the Conquerors by a goal earlier this season. They are ranked No. 1 in Division 4. Los Altos, a Division 5 finalist in 2010, is ranked No. 4 in the division.

Contreras has met up with history before, having set the CIF-SS single-season mark with 188 goals as a freshman in 2010. She is averaging just under seven goals a game this year. She had 575 goals going into a tournament last week.

The Bearcats could all but wrap up the league title with a win. Los Altos needs to win for a possible share of the league title.
