Who will be No. 1 in softball? Depends on what happens with Patricia Parks

Chino Hills is undoubtedly the area’s No. 1 softball team if junior pitcher Patricia Parks returns. She wasn’t with Chino Hills during winter round-robin games this week and there is speculation that she might transfer. I’m trying to track this down, but you know how hard that can be. Parks, a junior who I consider the best player returning, helped lead Chino Hills to a CIF-SS divisional title with her bat and speed on the bases last season. She was mostly an everyday outfielder, but also pitched too. And anyone fortunate enough to have seen her pitch knows she might be the most dominant pitcher we’ve seen in a while, which is why she’s already committed to Pac-12 power Azizona. So here’s the deal, if Parks is at Chino Hills, no doubt they’re the No. 1 team to start this season. If she winds up with another area team, say Ayala, then that team is probably No. 1. If she leaves the area, then No. 1 is up for debate. The “other” contenders are Bishop Amat, San Dimas, Northview, Bonita, Los Altos, and Ayala, to name a few. Any questions?

Below: Parks sliding home for a run last season against St. Lucy’s. As a 5-foot-9 sophomore Parks batted .479 with 18 RBIs and three homers. As a part-time pitcher she finished 10-1 with a 1.07 ERA in 65 innings.

Boys Basketball Rankings: Chino Hills leaves no doubt who’s No. 1; Workman impressive 18-1

TRIBUNE BOYS BASKETBALL RANKINGS
1. Chino Hills (16-4) — Huskies made this decision easy by hammering previously No. 1 Damien, beating the Spartans by 31 points.
2. La Verne Lutheran (18-6) — Give them credit, they’ve won 11 straight against most quality competition. They’re not the state-champ type team they once were, but still very good.
3. Damien (15-3) — After a humiliating night at Chino Hills, the Spartans bounce back with a 78-45 trouncing on Sunny Hills in Monday’s MLK Classic at Los Osos.
4. Bonita (15-5) — They still own the Hacienda, proving it again Monday with a 51-46 win over Diamond Bar.
5. Glendora (15-5) — Could finish fifth in Baseline. They’re scary because they shoot a lot of 3s. And they’re unpredictable because they shoot a lot of 3s.
6. Workman (18-1) — My scouting report on the Lobos is they have size inside and shooters on the perimeter. They’re too good for the Montview, but what happens when the playoffs start.
7. Covina (14-5) — They’re hoping to win the Valle Vista League outright for the first time in a long time. This should be the year to finally do it.
8. Claremont (13-7) — Arguably the third-best in the Sierra after Chino Hills and Damien.
9. Rowland (13-6) — They were so good in December before the injury-bug hit. If totally healthy, they’re very dangerous.
10. Diamond Bar (10-9) — Lacking consistency. They have solid wins and many questionable losses.

Girls Soccer Rankings: Chino Hills takes top spot; Diamond Bar and Los Altos meet for first in Hacienda

TRIBUNE GIRLS SOCCER RANKINGS
1. Chino Hills (12-2-4) — No debate, when you defeat No. 1 Claremont 3-0, you become No. 1
2. Claremont (17-3-1) — The defending champs will be back, they’re too good not to.
3. Diamond Bar (11-3-3) — Tatum Lockett and her area-leading 21 goals makes her an early player of the year candidate.
4. Bishop Amat (9-4-5) — The Lancers are starting to find their groove, but need a big game with St. Joseph’s in town on Thursday.
5. Sierra Vista (13-2-1) — Every year the Dons dominate the Montview. This year is no different, perfect 8-0.
6. San Dimas (10-4-2) — Who can stop them in the Valle Vista? Nobody, right?
7. St. Lucy’s (7-4-3) — They’re good, but not good enough for Sierra’s top two, Chino Hills and Claremont.
8. Los Altos (11-5-2) — After a slow start, the Conquerors are back in the Hacienda race with a big home game today against Diamond Bar.
9. South Hills (8-5-3) — They use to worry about having one tough game against Walnut in the old San Antonio League. Bet they wish the San Antonio existed today.
10. Charter Oak (9-5-2) — Remember when they were undefeated and beat St. Lucy’s in a nonleague game. I wondered if they were the area’s best. An 0-4 start in the Sierra answered that.

Boys Soccer Rankings: Damien still No. 1, but Sierra Vista, Walnut closing in

TRIBUNE BOYS SOCCER RANKINGS

1. Damien (9-2-3) — The Sierra League is no joke, so if you’re in first, you’re the leader of this poll.
2. Sierra Vista (12-1-3) — The Dons have been the most consistent over the past five or six years and have an eight-game unbeaten streak.
3. Walnut (12-1-1) — Rebounded after shocking 2-0 loss to West Covina, but still tied with Walnut in the Hacienda. Both 5-1.
4. South Hills (8-5-3) — Showed how good they can be in a win over Damien, and how vulnerable in a loss to Ayala.
5. Diamond Bar (10-4-2) — Tied for first in the Hacienda with Walnut. Both are 5-1. Should be a great race to the finish.
6. Nogales (8-2-1) — Dominating an average Valle Vista, but nice to know the Nobles are back on the soccer landscape.
7. Claremont (7-5-1) — Maybe the best seventh-ranked team in years. Seriously, the Wolfpack can beat anyone.
8. Los Altos (9-6-2) — Not completely out of the Hacienda picture, but at 3-3, they have some catching up to do.
9. Ayala (9-7-3) — Gives the Sierra four strong teams capable of beating one another.
10. Baldwin Park (7-4-1) — Should be so much better than 2-2 in the Sierra.

Girls Basketball rankings: Amat and Bonita meet to settle No. 1 debate

Above: What is reigning player of the year Nikki Wheatley averaging for Bonita? Who knows, that requires teams to post stats. But we know she’s averaging a lot.

Girls Basketball rankings
1. Bishop Amat (16-4) – Still only 1-2 in Del Rey, but best in these parts.
2. Bonita (16-4) — Undefeated in Hacienda, will take on Amat in Saturday showcase at APU at Noon.
3. Duarte (16-0) — Undefeated record on the line Friday in showdown at Workman.
4. Workman (15-4) — Even though Duarte is undefeated, Workman is ranked higher on Maxpreps.
5. Diamond Ranch (14-5) — Always dangerous because it is always well coached
6. Ayala (12-7) — Bulldogs beat South Hills to take over first in the Sierra
7. Wilson (12-6) — Too bad there is no competition to test the Wildcats in the Valle Vista.
8. Chino Hills (11-7) — Always solid, though not as solid as the boys team.
9. Rosemead (13-6) — Keeps on trucking in the Mission Valley.
10. Glendora (14-6) — Solid 2-2 in the tough Baseline. Not bad at all
