LA VERNE – Damien erased the sour taste of two defeats in the most dominating fashion imaginable.

Damien senior Tristan Viscaino scored three goals during a nine minute stretch in the second half and the Spartans kept pouring it on, defeating helpless South Hills 8-0 in what was expected to be a hard-fought rematch.

South Hills rallied from a 2-0 halftime deficit to stun Damien in their first meeting, winning 3-2 after getting a late goal to pull it out.

Not only was that loss fresh on the minds of Damien players, but so was Wednesday’s 3-1 loss to Claremont that left the Spartans in a first-place tie in the Sierra League with the Wolfpack.

Claremont left no doubt this time.

Sam Williams ran through an onside trap and had an easy finish in the 13th minute to get the scoring started. Brett Jenkins doubled the lead with an 18-yard strike straightaway in the 23rd and Daniel Arellano made it 3-0 with a goal seconds before the half ended.

For Williams and Jenkins, it was their eighth goals of the season.

Not wanting to give the Huskies any sign of life at all, Viscaino scored in the 54th, 60th and 63rd minute to make it 6-0 in the blink of an eye.

“We had a tough loss Wednesday and we knew we had to come back and win it,” Viscaino said. “We all came ready to play, we lost to South Hills earlier in league. We knew what we had to do and came out and did it.”

Damien (12-3-3, 6-2) remained in a first-place tie with Claremont (11-6-1, 6-2), a 3-1 winner over Chino Hills Friday. Both teams have two games left next week before the CIF-SS Division 1 playoffs begin.

Damien coach Eric McElrea said his team talked and had a heart-to-heart after Wednesday’s loss.

“After (Wednesday) we were really hungry to get a victory,” McElrea said. “We know what we’re capable of and we let our ourselves down (against
Claremont). Unfortunately for South Hills, this was our comeback game. We wanted to prove to ourselves we’re the (best) team in this league.”

Eric Leggio and Andres Aviles also scored and goalkeeper Mike O’Toole picked up his ninth shutout.

South Hills dropped to 10-7-3 and 4-4.
