There were no made-for-TV moments. Very few last-second changes of heart. What there was, however, was another bumper crop of local high school football talent sent to the next level during Wednesday’s National Signing Day festivities.
From Pasadena to Chino Hills back down to Bishop Amat and further out to La Mirada, area football standouts saw their dreams come true and made their college choices official.
At Bishoo Amat, the Lancers saw wide receiver Darren Andrews make it official that he will play at UCLA next season. Andrews was originally a Duke commit before changing his mind in December to join what turned into a dynamic recruiting class for the Bruins.
“It’s everything I wished for,” Andrews said. “All the hard work I put into it and everything and finally see everything come true.”
Amat wasn’t done. Defensive back Dionza Blue signed with Boise St. Blue led the Lancers in tackles, rushing, rushing touchdowns and interceptions last season. He originally committed to Fresno St., but changed his mind last month after Boise St. turned up the heat and stole him away.
“I’m blessed, first of all, and I want to thank God,” Blue said. “I’m just happy to be in this situation. It’s a great decision for my family. The coaching staff is really great up there. It’s more than football at that school and that’s what I really liked.”
Also signing from Amat on Wednesday was receiver Joseph Cook (Dartmouth) and defensive lineman Matthew Lopez (Cal Lutheran).
Monrovia’s stellar senior class that won three consecutive Mid-Valley Division championships saw three players move on to the next level. Linebackers Brett Walsh (Northwestern) and George Frazier V (Colorado) made their college choices long ago and stuck with them on Wednesday. All-purpose standout Mason Bryant is headed to the Ivy League to play at Pennsylvania.
“It’s always been a dream of mine to play college football,” Walsh said. “Now that it’s finally here, it’s a relief. I’m just very happy. I’m glad I could take it this far.”
Wildcats defensive back Anthony Craft, who is a Division 1 qualifier in terms of grades and test scores, did not sign on Wednesday but may do so later, according to Wildcats head coach Ryan Maddox.
The Pasadena area was a hotbed for quarterbacks last season and three of the top signal callers made official their plans on Wednesday. Pasadena’s Brandon Cox, originally an Arizona commit, is headed to Utah. St. Francis’ Jared Lebowitz signed with UNLV. Maranatha’s Andrew Elffers will play at Azusa Pacific next season.
Legendary Charter Oak head coach Lou Farrar is no stranger to strong outgoing classes. This year was no different for Farrar as receiver Bryce Bobo signed with Colorado, linebacker Andrew Hauser signed with Wake Forest and safety Khari Garcia signed with Montana State.
Hauser’s situation was tenuous at best after he missed most of last season after transferring to Charter Oak from Amat. Hauser also missed the first two games of this season before gaining his eligibility. He put on a show playing his desired position of linebacker and Wake Forest made a late push for his services.
“I took my official (visit) out there and fell in love with the place,” Hauser said of Wake Forest, which is in Winston-Salem, NC. “They’re in the ACC, it’s a great education and
it’s just a beautiful place out there.”
The South Hills offensive line duo of Riley Deen and Lake Aiono signed letters on Wednesday. Deen is headed to Northern Arizona and Aiono will play at Sacramento State. Joining Aiono at Sacramento St. is Ayala receiver/defensive back Jordan Robinson.
Elsewhere in the Sierra League, Chino Hills standout receiver Jack Austin, who was originally a Boise St. commit, made official his switch to Cal, which was announced last month.
La Mirada is already making huge noise for next year’s Signing Day with a trio of top recruits for the Class of 2014, but the Matadores weren’t shutout this year after as offensive lineman Spencer Ueli-Fa’atoalia signed with New Mexico St. Teammate Koa Kaleopa’a, a linebacker with offers from Cal and Arkansas, did not sign on Wednesday.
Pomona linebacker Azeem Victor held firm with his choice to attend Washington. Ganesha lineman Louis Mozqueda is headed to Ottawa University. West Covina defensive back Muleck Henderson signed with Chadron St. in Nebraska.
Mount San Antonio College had its typical big day. The Mounties saw defensive back Dorian Crawford sign with Texas Tech, former Amat standout Julian Gener sign with Hawaii and quarterback Nick Montana sign with Tulane.
Citrus saw defensive back Rodney Matthews sign with Fresno St. and defensive back David Metcalf sign with Prairie View A&M.
