Boys Basketball Playoffs: Workman in the worst division imaginable, Valle Vista has good chance to go 4-0

Observations: My first though is Northview coach Ron Rice may get another win at 8-14 Ridgecrest which could mean another home game for the coach who started at Northview in 1969 and is in his final season. For a league champ, Bonita probably has the toughest game at home against South Torrance and Bishop Amat can thank its lucky stars that league is over and things get easier in a division more to its liking at South El Monte. Also sad to look at one-loss Workman in such a tough division with Lutheran, Price and the others. Workman should be in 3A battling the Covina’s, Amat’s and teams from its own league like Gladstone. But for whatever reason the Workman boys, just like its girls, got screwed in playoff placement. But Workman should win round one. With four Valle Vista league teams in action, don’t be surprised if they go 4-0. Covina, San Dimas and Northview should all win, and Wilson is in a good spot at home.

It isn’t so much that Workman “belongs” in D-3A. According to enrollment they are in the right spot.

It’s just that CIF capped where smaller schools can “ascend” to. Teams like Price, Bishop Montgomery, La Verne Lu, Serra, etc., regardless of past success cannot move up any more divisions. It’s why all three divisions in the D3 level (A, AA, and AAA) are overall extremely weak (maybe 2 teams in each with a chance to win it all) while D4AA is loaded (and was even more loaded last year).

If you do it by enrollment Price should be D5 or 6. If you do it by historical success they should be D1. You mix the two and screw teams like Workman.

Valle Vista has 5 teams. Looks like you skipped Pomona who has a task tonight against Northwood. I really think Northview has their hands full with Burroughs, also but wish all VVL teams luck tonight.

In the small school divisions (i.e. D4 and down) the Publics and the Privates need to be separated. There is no way in the world that a small Public is going to compete with the likes of Serra, Price, etc. In the large school divisions such as D1AA the publics can compete because the sheer numbers in the school somewhat make up for a lack of recruiting ability with the AAU Coaches. My opinion is that Publics and Privates should be separated in every division and shouldn’t meet until the Regionals for State Playoffs.
