HACIENDA HEIGHTS – There were times Thursday night where the Wilson High School girls basketball looked overwhelmed.
But never doubt the heart of a champion.
Kaelyn Kawamoto scored 15 points and Kelli Calton had 11 and the host Wildcats overcame a double-digit deficit in the second half to score a 46-39 victory over Charter Oak in a CIF-Southern Section Division 3AA first-round game.
Wilson, which went undefeated in the Valle Vista League, improved to 21-6 and advanced to face either Grand Terrace or Compton in Saturday’s second round. Tiffany Lam also had 10 points and seven rebounds for the Wildcats.
Elizabeth Bongo had eight points and eight rebounds for Charter Oak, which finished 12-15.
Wilson coach Tracy Calton: “We’re used (to games like this). We played a lot of tough games in nonleague. We were ready for a tough game. “It doesn’t effect this team. They know what to do, what’s at stake, and how to get the job done. It’s all a matter of working together.”
Charter Oak coach Jenny Strycula: “You have to give Wilson credit. “They did a good job defensively. We just needed to do a better job taking care of the ball.”
