Baseball Rankings: Who’s No. 1? Bonita is still the one

Top Ten Story: Last season was a magical one for the Bonita High School baseball team.
The Bearcats, behind top pitcher Justin Garza, won another Hacienda League title and earned the school’s first CIF-Southern Section championship by defeating Alhambra, 5-1, to take the Division 3 crown.
But while Garza, who was 25-1 over his junior and senior seasons, and other key players are gone, expectations for another year of success are alive and well in La Verne. The Bearcats begin the season ranked No. 1 in the Valley and No. 3 in Division 3.

READY FOR MORE: Catcher Jake Blunt, pitcher Parker Merritt and shortstop Justin Row are ready for a new season Feb. 20, 2013.

Here’s the initial area baseball rankings, which include the usual suspects. The story on the top 10 will be in Tuesday’s newspaper:

1. Bonita (32-2 in 2012) — Bearcats still formidable, aided by D-1 transfers
2. Bishop Amat (20-10) — Lancers serious contenders with 8 returning starters
3. South Hills (20-10) — Denson makes Huskies a powerful pick
4. Damien (15-11-1) — Will rely on UCLA commits Hockin and Olsen
5. Nogales (22-7) — Pitching tandem Gonzalez and Guzman are tough to beat
6. Glendora (18-11) — Tartans again the favorite in the Baseline
7. Los Altos (20-10) — If anyone can overtake Bonita in the Hacienda, its the Conqs
8. Northview (16-9-1) — All-leaguers Grijalva and Castaneda make the Vikes a tough out
9. San Dimas (18-9) — Saints will challenge Nogales, Northview for VVL supremacy
10. Diamond Bar (15-9-2) — Brahmas are young, but solid

I am baseball Buff too….Mtown is solid again this year…

  • Valley Athletics

Agree with the top rankings . Where is Covina . Covina lost 3-2 to south hills so they must be decent .northview also got a 2 year varsity starter from walnut who is a pitcher and infielder and hit close to 400 last year at walnut so that should make them better . I wouldn’t consider diamond bar that young with Conner Meade , zeph Walters , tommy delgadillo , Austin z and kasey kernohan all returning senior starters . Nogales have a very impressive infield with Gonzales , Guzman and guardado . Pitching had more depth last year.damien and amat are loaded also .

Time to update your photos Aram and Fred. Come on guys, aging is part of life, don’t resist it. LOL

Rankings pretty accurate. Top 5 are Solid. Glendora needs to step out and play the big boys of the Valley during the regular season. Why aren’t they in the Dick’s Tourney?

    • GP AKA Green Machine

Why is Bishop So High? They play in a low division….and well I think Monrovia could beat them this year…just like we did last year…However we won’t meet up in playoffs…

      • Valley Athletics

They where all underclassmen last year . Now with more experience and a good transfer from cathedral they should be improved . Scott hurst has been hitting great and with alcantara healthy there line up will be lethal .with Serra and cathedral now in there league , division 3 is going to be tough .

        • GP AKA Green Machine

I agree, I saw them play some tough oc teams early last year. As I compare South OC teams to SGV Teams…The SGV has comparable baseball talent to any area in Socal…With Bonita, Damien, BA, Monrovia, Arcadia, TC, Alhambra ETC…I still think they are ranked a little too high. They play a very tough schedule so, so if they are winning games…you rank em high…

          • Valley Athletics

Amats the only team with a challenging schedule in the valley . Bonita also added some tough non league opponents this year with cypress and palm desert . Amat is in the elks tournament and boras classic . They also play chatsworth, Lakewood agoura , west ranch and alemany. Then you add cathedral and Serra to league along with St. Paul and la salle . I don’t see them looking good on paper at the end of the season unless they win cif .the valley teams are good and can hang with the best .

          • GP AKA Green Machine

Yeah Monrovia didn’t play anyone…but they beat BA

          • Valley Athletics

            Well said .

  • Tooth only the Tooth.

Valley Athletics; the transfer from Walnut to Northview batted .310, that’s closer to .300 than .400.
Green Machine; Amat moved to Division 3 while Mtown is Div 4.

    • Valley Athletics

I don’t keep track . At the time I checked walnuts stats he was batting 398 but that was halfway through league . Don’t know where he finished . But he is still a good impact player if you seen him play before .

    • GP AKA Green Machine

AMAT should be in D1….Mtown Belongs in D4.
