Wrestling: Northview looking for another Masters title while Vikings girls try to secure a state title

By Steve Ramirez Staff Writer
It’s the aspiration of every wrestler in California to advance to Bakersfield and compete for a CIF State championship.
For area competitors, that goal is one weekend away. All will attempt to punch their ticket for the state championships when they compete in this weekend’s CIF-Southern Section Masters Meet, scheduled for today and Saturday at Temecula Valley High School.
The medal round, including championship bouts, is slated for 2 p.m. on Saturday. The top nine placers in each of the 14 weight classes qualify for next weekend’s state championships at Rabobank Arena in Bakersfield.
The area contingent will feature 65 qualifiers, including 14 who won CIF-SS individual titles last week.
Traditional power Northview, which won this event last season, is expected to be in the running with nine qualifiers, including five who won Central Division titles.

Girls Soccer Playoffs: Bishop Amat beats Diamond Bar 4-3 in sudden death; San Dimas, Arroyo advance, Sierra Vista, Chino Hills go down

By Fred J. Robledo, Staff Writer
Sudden death is a cruel way to end while sweet for the team that’s piling on top of each other in celebration, but regardless of which side you were cheering for Diamond Bar and Bishop Amat lived up to all the hype.
The only words freshman Alexa Ruiz could sputter out was “it was exciting” following Bishop Amat’s dramatic 4-3 victory over Diamond Bar that ended on Ruiz’s double-overtime golden goal in Thursday’s CIF-Southern Section Division 3 girls soccer quarterfinal.
Exciting it was, and with some controversy on the game-winner that sent fourth-seed Amat (17-4-5) to Tuesday’s semifinals, where it will face Yorba Linda in hopes of advancing to its third straight title game.
After Diamond Bar goalkeeper Tyler Hunt made an incredible save off a header in the first overtime to keep the Brahmas in it, Amat’s Lena Suehrstedt sent a long throw-in late in the second overtime that got poked away straight to Amat’s Yazmin Montoya.
Montoya tried to hurry a shot that she shanked toward the back post where Ruiz was standing for an easy re-direct and finish while Diamond Bar coaches were screaming for an offside with just four minutes left before the game would be decided on penalty kicks. (To continue click thread)

San Dimas 1, Katella 0: The San Dimas High girls soccer team put pressure on Katella from the opening whistle and defeated the Knights 1-0 on Thursday to advance to the CIF-Southern Section Division 6 semifinals for the third consecutive year.
Oxnard 2, Sierra Vist 1, OT: For the third consecutive year, Sierra Vista was ousted in the quarterfinals of the CIF-Southern Section Division 6 playoffs. The Dons fell to visiting Oxnard, 2-1, in overtime on a golden goal by forward Melissa Aldrete in the 82nd minute.
Great Oak 3, Chino Hills 2: Temecula Great Oak jumped out to a two-goal lead and hung on for a 3-2 victory over Chino Hills in the quarterfinals of the CIF-Southern Section Division 2 girls soccer playoffs Thursday night.

Girls Water Polo: Los Altos falls 7-6, Bonita loses 10-9

La Serna 10, Bonita 9
CLAREMONT —
La Serna High School felt just making the CIF-Southern Section girls water polo Final Four was accomplishment enough.
That was then, and this is now. And this time, the Lancers were hoping to reach a little higher, and because of the senior Gabby Pierandozzi, they grabbed their goal.
Pierandozzi scored four goals, all in the fourth quarter and Jacqui Verdugo blocked a shot with 15 seconds left and the Lancers advanced to the championship round with a 10-9 victory over top-seed Bonita Wednesday in a Division 4 semifinal at Pomona College.
La Serna, also getting two goals each from Isabella Villa and Jenel Rivera, improved to 21-10 and will face Troy, which defeated Los Altos, 7-6, in the finals at William Woollett Aquatic Center in Irvine. The time will be determined Thursday.
Bonita, which received six goals from Natalie Rivas and 10 saves from goalie Millie Moro, finished 23-8. The Bearcats had a chance to tie, but Angela Gomez’ shot with 13 seconds was blocked by Verdugo and La Serna ran out the clock.
La Serna coach Erin Brown: “Once we wrapped up league, our most important goal was to get to the CIF finals. We were really concentrating on getting to that final game. It’s the most important thing this year.”
La Serna’s Gabby Pierandozzi: “I was just stepping up because we had a lot of girls in foul trouble. It was like, ‘just do what you got to do.’ I’m just really proud.”
Bonita’s Natalie Rivas (on final shot): “They were trying to double team me. I couldn’t do anything, so I let my teammates try.”

Troy 7, Los Altos 6
COMMERCE —
Los Altos High School was so close to advancing to its second CIF-Southern Section girls water polo championship game since 2010 it could taste it.
But the outcome of games are not determined by halftime.
The Conquerors learned that the hard way Wednesday.
Grace Shade scored on a loft shot with two minutes remaining and goalie Jessica Harris had 19 saves, including a key stop in the final 20 seconds, as Troy rallied from a four-goal deficit to score a 7-6 victory over Los Altos in a Division 4 semifinal at the Brenda Villa Aquatic Center.
The Warriors, getting two goals from Allison Lany, improved to 24-8 and advanced to face La Serna, a 10-9 winner over Bonita, in Saturday’s championship game. The time will be determined today.
Stephanie Contreras scored two goals for the Conquerors, who finished 22-9.
Los Altos coach Chris Coleman: “They took the momentum right out of us. We stopped playing. We played like we were trying to protect a lead rather than get a win.”

Boys Soccer Playoffs: Tough afternoon for Damien, Pomona, but Claremont moves on with Golden Goal

Fred J. Robledo, Staff Writer
PASADENA –– It’s not how many opportunities you get, it’s what you do with your opportunities.
Visiting Pomona had more than its share, but Marshall had the one that counts.
Marshall’s Ben Cuevas slid a pass wide for Jaime DePaz in the 29th minute and DePaz’s hurried shot ricocheted off Red Devils defender Eric Ortiz and snuck home for the lone goal, giving the Eagles a 1-0 victory over the Red Devils in Wednesday’s CIF-Southern Section Division 5 second-round game. Boys Hoops: Glendora on a playoff run again, advances to quarterfinals while Damien and La Verne Lutheran punch semifinal tickets

GLENDORA — There are two things you can usually count on from the Glendora High School boys basketball team — defense and the ability to shoot.
Glendora used both Tuesday night.
A.J. Bigornia scored 30 points on six 3-pointers and host Glendora made some key stops down the stretch to advance to the CIF-Southern Section quarterfinals with a 55-49 victory over Dominguez in a Division 2A second-round game.
Glendora, also getting eight points and seven rebounds from Thomas Rico, improved to 19-10 and will host Redondo on Friday.
EJ Johnson scored 17 points and Erik Garcia had 11 for the Dons, who finished 11-17. Dominguez trailed by just six with less than 30 seconds left but could only trim it to 53-49 before Sean Williams made two free throws with 14.9 seconds left to clinch it for Glendora.
Glendora coach Mike LeDuc: “I thought we came out a little tentative, but when we loosed up, we relaxed and started making a lot of shots. For us to be successful, we have to make a lot of shots. That’s the style we play.”
Glendora’s A.J. Bigornia: “I just felt confident. I made my first three shots, and my confidence level just went up.”
Dominguez coach Grady Johnson: “They hit some very big threes. We knew who their shooters were, we identified them. We just didn’t defend them well, and they made shots. It’s really what it came down to. They hit some shots when they really needed to.”
