Bishop Amat, which won the Division 3 title in 2011 and were runner-ups last year, received two goals from leading scorer Nayeli Requejo and goals from Jamie Peters and Katy Zamora to improve to 16-4-5, setting up a date with Hacienda League champion Diamond Bar, a 1-0 winner at Flintridge Prep.
“I know it’s going to be a tough game,” Amat’s Zamora said of facing Diamond Bar. “We just have to leave it all on the field.”
Amat did just that to reach the quarters. (To continue reading click thread).

The Garza train just keeps on rolling; Former Bonita pitcher Justin Garza helps CS Fullerton to 4-0 start, gets his first college win

Former Bonita baseball pitcher Justin Garza, who was 25-1 the past two years, including helping the Bearcats to the school’s first CIF-Southern Section title since 1951, has continued that success in college.
The Cal State Fullerton freshman opened his NCAA career with a win. He threw six shutout innings in the Titans’ 9-0 victory over Nebraska on Saturday. Garza gave up two hits and struck out six. Fullerton, which opened with a win over USC before sweeping a doubleheader from Nebraska on Saturday and beating Cal State Bakersfield on Sunday, is 4-0 and ranked No. 22 nationally.

CIF-SS Wrestling: Northview is Team X after winning 10th division title; Valley dominates with 10 individual championships

By Steve Ramirez, SGVN

RIVERSIDE —
Northview High School believed it left a little on the table when it came up short in the CIF-Southern Section dual wrestling championships last week.
The Vikings did something about it Saturday.
Northview, with five individual championships, scored the school’s 10 CIF-Southern Section team title by dominating at the Central Division championships at Norte Vista High School.
It was also an impressive performance for the area, which produced 10 of the 14 champions and qualified 36 to next week’s CIF-SS Masters Meet at Temecula Valley High School.
The 10 champions were Northview’s Vincent Parra (106 pounds), Eric Ochoa (113), Ricky Padilla (145), Steven Lopez (160) and Bryan Salinas (170); Rowland’s Mario Lopez (136); Walnut’s Freddie Hsiao (120); Diamond Bar’s Nathan Rodriguez (182); Charter Oak’s Eric Prevost and South Hills’ Marco Valdivia (285).
“You have to give the kids all the credit,” Northview coach Bobby Bellamy said. “They came back hungry. To lose the way we lost last weekend and persevere and push through all the challenges they faced, I’m just extremely proud of them and ecstatic that we were able to get it done.”
Also qualifying from the area are Northview’s John Rivera (120, fourth), Tony Arellano (132, third), Daniel Valles (136, second) and Anthony Martinez (182, fourth); Charter Oak’s Joseph Alexander (126, third), Joey Castorena (132, fifth), Diego Cortez (152, fifth) and David Apodaca (285, fifth); Rowland’s Josh Martinez (106, second), Bruno Flores (126, fourth) and Greg Lawton (160, second); Diamond Bar’s Jeremy Foo (120, fifth), Matt Carrillo (195, third) and Dre Johnson (225, third); South Hills’ Kevin Kelly (126, second) and Matt Chavez (152, fourth); Chino Hills’ Nathan Aragon (160, fourth) and Garrick Gurney (170, fourth); West Covina’s Bradley Ojala (170, third) and Robert Montoya (182, fifth); San Dimas’ David Gonzalez (106, third); Walnut’s Michael Sill (136, third); Covina’s Jose Lozano (113, fifth); Damien’s Patrick Sanchez (285, third) and Bonita’s Seth Morales (152, third).

Girls Basketball: Diamond Ranch takes care of Rosemead 50-33; Bishop Amat, Bonita, Glendora, Wilson advance

Diamond Ranch 50, Rosemead 33: Tai Lark scored a team-high 16 points and Lauren Graves added 12 for Diamond Ranch in its second-round victory over Rosemead, which had to play without three-time Mission Valley League MVP Melody Gauthier, who broke her hand in the final week of the season after averaging 23 points. Rosemead didn’t look intimidated early, racing to a 9-1 lead and getting a game-high 20 points from Sydney Hua and nine points from Lauren Diep, but Diamond Ranch was too physical and improved to 21-7 to move on to the quarterfinals. Diamond Ranch played without head coach Mike James, who was unavailable due to a death in the family. Rosemead finishes the season 20-7.

Boys Basketball: Santa Fe rallies to oust Rowland, 56-55; plus Chino Hills’ postgame interviews following Huskies 68-40 win over Montclair

By Steve Ramirez
twitter.com/SteveRRamirez
ROWLAND HEIGHTS —
Santa Fe High School was down, but certainly not out Friday, and the Chiefs proved it when it mattered most.
Charlie Muhlenkamp made two free throws with two seconds left as Santa Fe rallied from a double-digit deficit to score a 56-55 victory over host Rowland in a CIF-Southern Section Division 2AA first-round game.
The Chiefs, getting 19 points from Muhlenkamp and 14 from Jonathan Parral, improved to 13-14 and advanced to Tuesday’s second round against either Eastside or No. 7 seed Camarillo.
Joseph Dionisio had 16 points for the Raiders, who finished 19-9. Rowland had a chance to win it at the buzzer, but Dioniso’s half-court shot clanked off the back of the rim.
Santa Fe’s Charlie Muhlenkamp: “We’re a family and we didn’t give up on each other. We just got more aggressive (during the second half). We were a little lazy coming out, and we just picked it up.”
Rowland coach Gordon Hamlow: “I’m irritated. I thought there were some things that didn’t go our way that should have. (Santa Fe) did a great job. They hit the free throws to win it. Kudos to them.”

Chino Hills following big win over Montclair, Tom Kiss all over it.
