Breaking News: Damien and St. Lucy’s lose appeal, will join Parochial league in 2014-15 season

Damien and St. Lucy’s lost appeals with the CIF-Southern Section on Wednesday in hopes of remaining in the Sierra League. Damien lost by a vote of 14-6 and St. Lucy’s lost 13-7. Damien and St. Lucy’s are expected to be placed in Parochial Leagues (beginning 2014-15) barring the outcome of a legal fight in the courts, which is expected next. CIF sent a memo to athletic directors in November with recommendations for Area Placement for the 2014-18 cycle. One of those recommendations included moving Damien and St. Lucy’s, part of the Sierra League and Mt. SAC area, under the Parochial umbrella. That could pair Damien/St. Lucy’s with Bishop Amat, St. Paul, St. Francis or a number of different scenarios when new leagues are configurated.

STORY: Damien High and St. Lucy’s lost their final appeal cases Wednesday concerning area placement in a session before the CIF executive committee Wednesday. That means instead of the private schools staying in the Mt. SAC area, they are forced to switch to the parochial area for the four-year cycle beginning in 2014-15.
Damien, an all-boys school, and St. Lucy’s, an all-girls school, no longer will be part of the Sierra League after next spring. Where they will wind up will not be decided until a future re-leaguing meeting.

If Damien and St. Lucy’s joined the Parochial Area, that could set up a
situation where Damien/St Lucy’s joins a league that includes Bishop
Amat, St. Paul, St. Francis, Loyola and perhaps La Salle. This is purely
speculation, but that would be a six-team parochial league that
geographically makes sense, and makes sense in just about all sports,
with the exception of football. This wouldn’t be a league that could
compete in the Pac-5, forcing Amat and Loyola to a lower football
division. Who knows what happens, but if Damien joins a league that
includes Bishop Amat, hard to believe THAT league would still compete in
    the Pac-5. Interesting possibilities here.

Fred, the all-girls schools that would need to be paired up with Loyola and St. Francis to even things out don’t figure to be competitive Mayfield,Marymount, etc.but that’s the only stumbling block I see in this…of course Damien with or without GG will go kicking and screaming, just like Charter oak and Glendora,South Hills did a few years ago

    • Galileo

what all girls schools Mr Libero would you add in to even out the Loyola/St. Francis …….

CIF is finally making the move to put all Catholic schools in the Catholic Athletic Assn. and making them join a parochial league. St. Bonaventure and Oaks Christian have received the same memo from CIF. So many different scenarios can play out from this.

As for Damien, the Mission League would seem to be the best fit for them, competitively and geographically.

Bishop Amat is already in a parochial league, but this could affect them greatly. Competitively, Oaks Christian and St. Bonaventure would fit well in the Serra League. Geographically is where things get tough. Bishop Amat is the furthest out of the area and Loyola doesn’t fit well either. A drive to and from St. Bonaventure would not be fun for either school. IF Oaks Christian and St. Bonaventure are added to the Serra League, would Bishop be okay with the traveling? OR, would CIF drop Bishop and possibly Loyola to the Mission League?

In the even bigger picture for 2018, is CIF looking to move to an all Catholic Athletic Assn. Division with all parochial leagues?

If the Damien Administration gets themselves together, they can compete at the highest level. This includes the Principal, AD & Football coach being on the same page!!!

    • Not So Fast My Friend

Isn’t Damien about to let their head coach go? If they do, whose on your list of replacements?

      • oldtimer

There coach resigned before the season ended.

        • Not So Fast My Friend

Must have missed that announcement. Any idea whose on the short list?

          • Spartan 4 Life

It doesn’t matter unless the Administration acts like it’s 2012 vs. 1980!!!

          • Not So Fast My Friend

How so? They weren’t on the same page under Gano? (I don’t know, that’s why I’m asking)

  • Steve_Ramirez

Am I missing something here, but how does Oaks CHRISTIAN get placed in CATHOLIC Athletic Association? Don’t see any problems with the others.

    • Galileo

OLu is in the Cathiloc Athletic Assoc. same as Harvard-Westlake

      • Steve_Ramirez

        That doesn’t make sense, either.

        • Galileo

can’t get any closer to being Cathiloc than Lutherans, Martin Luther was a Cathiloc Bishop..

          • Steve_Ramirez

A Catholic bishop who broke away from the church and created Lutherans. Last time I checked Lutherans are Christians, just not Catholics.

          • Galileo

he didn’t break away, Luther wanted to reform the Church, hence “the reformation” all of his original followers were Cathilocs too, until excommunicated by Pope Leo, I believe, many of his rants on his 95 theses later were adopted by the church, in reality, Lutherans are about as close as you can get to Cathilocism which is all that I said in the first place!

          • Steve_Ramirez

No doubt, Galileo. They are as close as you can get without being Catholic. Don’t want to get into a Holy War here. We are all Christians. My main point is with the name. Now if they changed it to the Parochial Athletic Association. And yes, I have a problem with the league calling it the Big East when they will have Boise State and San Diego State, two west teams in it, just as I have a problem with the Big Ten keeping that name when it will now have 14 teams, and the Big 12 keeping that name when it has 10. At least the Pac-12 keeps it right. I also hear, though, that San Diego State and Boise State are rethinking their position and might stay in the Mountain West now that the ticket to the dance will be easier with the four-team playoff.

          • fb101

Do pro sports division names and teams not being geographically ‘correct’ keep you up at night too?

          • Galileo

the name(CAA) is now a misnomer, I doubt that Lutherans object to be lumped together with the CAA. Bishop Amat,Damien,St Francis,St. Paul, all seem to fit, but Loyola, no way they’re Mater Dei north strong, very strong in everything, then on the girls side, if both St Francis and Loyola are in, Alverno, Mayfield,Ramona Convent, Marymount won’t cut it, St Matthias(Pius X) goes co-ed next year and that won’t be a competitive program in any boys sports for a long time if ever. I see Serra and Bishop Montgomery added..and they’ll kick and scream just like CO,SH and Glendora did a few years ago. For the real lowdown ,lets get Rainer Wulf or, Glenn Martinez(ex Amat legends)form the CIF-SS office or local legend Joe Amat to chime in.

    • fb101

What ISSUE do you have with it. Are you Catholic so it OFFENDS you?

      • Steve_Ramirez

I’m Catholic, but that’s not my problem with it. It’s like if you had a league called the Pasadena League and you didn’t have any of the schools from Pasadena in it. Same reason why the San Gabriel Valley League needs a name change.

        • fb101

Wow. So when San Diego State moves to the Big East next year is that gonna bother you too?

    • Not So Fast My Friend

if I’m reading Steve correctly, the issue is the word “Catholic.” So on the surface it sounds like it’s a conference just for Catholic schools. And in that sense, I agree with him.

  • Steve_Ramirez

…and allow me a pet peeve, it’s not CIF, but rather CIF-Southern Section, Just like it’s not Mt. Sac, as so many of you write, but Mt. SAC!!

    • fb101

      REALLY? Pet Peeve…..LOL…..

      • Steve_Ramirez

Yes, FB101, that’s what we called it, with “pet” meaning No. 1…It’s an old saying. People have to realize when you write CIF as a stand alone, then it refers to the state body, which it is. But when you write about a particular section than you clarify, CIF-SS, CIF-Central, etc..And remember when you say Mt. SAC, you are referring to Mt. San Antonio College, so it’s Mt. SAC, not Mt. Sac.
